Why have a drill?
Because this is Earthquake Country!
<Insert new EQ map>
An earthquake can happen at any time! 17
![Page 18: ShakeOut BC - EPICC - BC_ShakeOut_EM_Pres… · The Great British Columbia ShakeOut !! 2 . Best Practice As A Foundation For Success Key factors that motivate a culture of preparedness](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042915/5f5065ac9aba50470f31f857/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
What to do…
DROP – when a big earthquake hits, you will be knocked off your feet
COVER – get under a sturdy piece of furniture (a table) and
cover your head and neck – you will need them after the shaking stops
HOLD ON – hold on to the table and stay with it during the
shaking • If inside, stay inside! • If outside, stay outside!
18
![Page 19: ShakeOut BC - EPICC - BC_ShakeOut_EM_Pres… · The Great British Columbia ShakeOut !! 2 . Best Practice As A Foundation For Success Key factors that motivate a culture of preparedness](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042915/5f5065ac9aba50470f31f857/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Why Drop Cover Hold-on
• Building collapse is rare in British Columbia • Most people are injured in earthquakes by things falling
on them • Get under something to be safe! • (Need to add something about those who can’t get on
the ground or have nothing to get under) • If in a tsunami area… (add map?)
19
![Page 20: ShakeOut BC - EPICC - BC_ShakeOut_EM_Pres… · The Great British Columbia ShakeOut !! 2 . What not to do
• DO NOT run outside - Trying to run in an earthquake is
dangerous. The ground is moving and glass/debris will be falling
• DO NOT get in a doorway! – It does not protect you from falling
items, and in strong shaking you can not stand

Natural Gas & Electric Safety
Prepare Your Home - Secure your appliances: water tank, range,
furnace/boiler - Keep the area around gas appliances clear of
combustible materials - Review how to turn off the gas, but don't actually turn it
off unless there’s an emergency. - Check your insurance policy
22
![Page 23: ShakeOut BC - EPICC - BC_ShakeOut_EM_Pres… · The Great British Columbia ShakeOut !! 2 . - Listen to local radio and television for updated information.
- Check Utilities - If you do not smell or hear gas escaping, consider leaving the gas on
to provide a source of energy for heat, hot water and cooking - If you think you smell gas or hear gas escaping, act fast to turn off
valve - Watch for and stay clear of downed power lines--Never
go near or touch a fallen power line. - Always assume that a line or anything it is in contact with, is
energized. - Stay at least ten metres (33 feet) away at all times and do not
attempt to remove debris surrounding the line. - If you see a fallen power line, report the exact location to BC Hydro.
- Roads may be damaged, drive with caution
