H appy New Year! I can’t believe it’s 2017 already. It seems that time just keeps moving faster and faster. Let’s make this a great year for NVSC. You can do this by getting involved. I would like to welcome new Board Members Sherri Wildoner, Ken Gibbs, and Bill Meyer. Their willingness to participate on the Board is greatly appreciated. They join Board Members Sue Young, Bonnie Arms, Mark Hendrickson, David Barna, Pamela Alfano and Fran Mong. The club could not function without the dedication of the Board. Our holiday party was a lot of fun. We had a great attendance and it was nice to see some new faces and renew old acquaintances. A big thanks to Emily Maroon and her helpers for decorating the tables and for making all the centerpieces. And thanks to Bonnie Arms who made all the candy cane reindeers for us. Also thanks to Jason and Jeanne Potter for handling all the drinks and setups and to our photographer, John Romito. My thanks to everyone that helped with setup and cleanup as well as to all the people that brought food and a toy for our “Toys for Tots.” Thanks also to Marcia Conway for inviting Richard Golling, a Marine veteran who volunteered to come and take the toys to a drop off location. And in case you were not there, Jeanne Potter won the Shagger of the Year award for all her volunteer work for the club and for helping a fellow member in need. Congratulations, Jeanne. Mark your calendars now for our Pre-Super Bowl party on Saturday, February 4, at Addy’s from 4:00 – 8pm. This was a big hit last year so come join us. Addy’s has a great hardwood floor for dancing. See the flyer for more info. Look for announcements in the Hello Shagger about our early bird lessons this month. This year marks the 20th anniversary of our Jackie and Charlie event so we are going to do something special and combine it with our Capital Shag Classic on May 12 – 13. Not only will our pro instructors be Jackie and Charlie, we are also going to have two of Carolina’s best DJs so save the date and get ready to party because it is going to be 5 O’clock Somewhere. See flyer in this issue for more details. Congratulations to Lorraine Rohlik and her partner for winning second place in the US Open Swing Dance Competition Masters Routine in November. Also to Dale Hern and her husband Jim for placing 6th in the same competition. The US Open is the Best of the Best so way to go you guys. I forgot to mention last month that Tom Brett has joined the dance committee. He has been shagging for many years and has also been teaching the shag for Fairfax County so welcome Tom. I am very pleased to welcome our new editor, Adele Robey. You can read her story on page 8. Don’t forget to purchase your SOS card from Mark Hendrickson as you will need it for SOS Midwinter. Thanks to all who helped make this past year a good one. We need your continued support and look forward to a great year ahead. Living in a state (Virginia) where there is abeautiful coastline, I always found it amusingthat whenever we talked about “The Beach,”

it was naturally assumed to be North Myrtle Beach.Life can be tricky to navigate at times, and mymoving to NMB permanently was never on mypersonal “Places to live whenwe retire” list. Of course it wason Dave’s “PtoLWWR” list, because he loved the music, dance, and the shagcommunity and lifestyle. Iwas looking for other thingsto do, besides the beach clubs, and dancing. Well, the greaterNMB area has more!

Love to listen to more than“just” beach music? GNMB(greater North Myrtle Beach) has visiting artists atthe Alabama Theatre and the House of Blues; LongBay Symphony (in Myrtle Beach) has ticketsubscriptions available for its series, as does theTheatre of the Republic (in Conway) for themusical theater productions (five productions overnine months).

There are wine tastings (not the ones you see onthe highway at Barefoot Landing) at GNMB wineshops; wine dinners at exceptional restaurants, where you pick what level you want to participate in— each diner brings a bottle of wine to share in the$18-$25 range, OR, each diner brings a bottle ofwine in $45-$55 range — following their theme ofthe dinner: “Exploring Bordeaux,” “Really getting toknow Rosé,” “Rhone from both Left Bank and RightBank,” you get the idea.

There are many small towns, less than an hour’sdrive, to visit, explore, great places to eat and drink,and they celebrate holidays and with festivals foreverything, (Ham and Yam festival in Tabor City)!FUN. Walking the Marsh Walk at Murrell’s Inletand checking out the new babies on Goat Island;

glass blowing in Conway;pouring soy candles atPawley’s Island; discoveringthe special way of cookingseafood in Calabash;attending a Murder Mysterydinner at North Myrtle BeachMuseum (and guessing whodone it). GNMB has more!

Moving to GNMB madesense to me — I’m getting toknow more NVSCers, those

now permanently transplanted as well as some parttimers. Being “FROM” NoVa is a strong bond. Mysister and brother have property (a condo) inMyrtle Beach, so I get to see them frequently;GNMB is a great halfway point between Dave’ssister in western Virginia and her beautifulgrandbabies in Florida; former neighbors whotravel south like to break their trip up by stoppingoff; reconnecting with more high school chums(who knew that many lived so close to, or in, MyrtleBeach?). And the whole shag community — family— world comes to visit three times a year (SOS): agreat way to catch up with a LOT of friends at onetime.

If you’ve toyed with any thoughts of “moving toThe Beach”, Yes, GNMB certainly DOES havemore!

Want to maximize your time on the dancefloor? Here are some tips:

1. How to ask for a danceSimple and strightforward: “Would you like todance?” or “May I have this dance?” Men: Step upto the plate and ask someone to dance...it’s veryflattering. And women? Don’t think that it’s theman’s job to do the asking...if you want to dance, goahead and ask. It goes both ways!

2. Deodorant & MouthwashThe number one reason people avoid dancing withsomeone is how they smell. Wear deodorant. Grab amint at the registration table. Some people aresensitive to perfumes (you can’t wear them at allaround Jackie when she’s teaching), so back off onthe cologne and perfume. Better yet, on dance nightjust leave it in the bottle.

3. Don’t correct your partnerSure, you’re a good dancer, but unless you’re asked, hold that urge to correct your partner. Leave that tothe dance instructors during the lesson. No onewants his or her shagging critiqued in the middle of adance. Now if your partner does ask for advice, headto the sidelines at the end of the dance anddemonstrate.

4. What’s my dance time limit? The average length of the songs the DJs play isabout four minutes. So, realistically, that’s abouthow long you need to be with a partner. But, hey, ifyou had a great dance, do an encore. But it’s alwaysokay to say thanks and part company.

5. Declining a DanceOkay, this is a tough call. Of course, you can alwaysavoid eye contact and the potential partner willmove on. Or you can claim that you need to restyour feet (or knees); but if someone else asksduring the same song, you gotta say no to thatperson, too. A good solution is to just ask if you canhave a dance later. Then put your feet up for a songor two before you hit the floor again.

6. CollisionsA crowded dance floor is a great thing, but thebigger the crowd the greater the opportunity forcollisions. If you bump, a simple “sorry” is all that’snecessary. It doesn’t matter who bumped first!

7. Smile!Even if you are just learning, dancing is fun. That’spretty much why we’re all here! When you smileyour partner knows you’re enjoying the dance (andthe company) and you’ve got a great chance ofbeing asked again.

On December 3, NVSC held its 23rd holiday party, which included lotsof eating, drinking, dancing and, most importantly Toys for Tots. MarciaConway gave a hilarious rendition of calling the Marines to get acontingent to join the party to collect the toys (but they’ve been herebefore! and danced!). Not having any luck, Marcia went them one better:there to shepherd the toys to their proper destination was retired MarineRichard M. Golling, Jr. Resplendent in a red jacket, Rich stood by asMarcia recounted his amazing life: Rich joined the USMC in 1965,starting at Parris Island, continuing to Camp Geiger, NC, on to CampPendleton and finally to Vietnam. After leaving the Corps, Rich earnedhis accounting degree and joined the Federal Government in financialmanagement. After receiving his master’s degree in 1984 he joined the

Naval Audit Service in Washington and in 1985 was reassigned to Yokosuka, Japan. In 1987, found himselfback in DC, where he became a Certified Fraud Examiner. He retired in 2009 with almost 40 years ofservice. Never one to just relax, Rich joined the Marine Corps League in 2012 and received the Shangri-LaDetachment Marine of the Year Award in 2014. We can’t think of anyone better to watch over the toys asthey make their way to Santa’s sack for delivery to our most deserving kids. Great work, Marcia and Rich!

fabulous dance to that fabulous music. But after acouple of weeks we’d head back north to the land ofjitterbug and Bandstand, and shag would take aback seat until the following year. But now it wastime. I reached out to Joan who said, of course, Ineeded to come to Renée’s and take lessons. We seta date and since she couldn’t be there that night, shesaid, “Go, and ask for David Rodgers. He’ll watchover you.” So I entered the world of “up together, back, back in place,” thrilled to be, finally, living outthis dream of learning this dance. David did, indeed, watch over me. He got me started in the lessons andCathy Metcalf stepped up when there weren’tenough men and worked with me for an evening(true talent being able to dance both parts!) Irealized that this wasn’t just a Wednesday nightsocial but a family, related through the love of adance. Wow, this was exactly what I needed.

Real LifeLike many of us, I lead a very busy life. Graphicdesign is my long time profession and I also have asecond full time job, running a small professionaltheater in Southeast Washington. This is my secondtheater, my husband and I having built one on HStreet NE in 2001. Apparently I never learned mylesson. It’s not a glamorous profession (well, maybeon Broadway) but it’s rewarding. We’re big oncommunity outreach and believe that the arts are agreat way to remove barriers and create a levelplaying field, especially for our kids. (And yes, I’m aleftover hippie of sorts.)

I’m also one of the few club members who is aDC resident so sometimes getting out to Route 50on Wednesdays is a heavy lift. But everytime I getthere I am so happy I did. For one thing dancing cancure almost whatever ails you, from stress tosadness. And sitting down with a bunch of friendsto talk about anything and everything (exceptmaybe politics this year) makes me realize howmuch I need a change of pace.

So I am grateful for NVSC... to Joanie and Davidwho got me started, for all of the teachers I havehad, all of the friends I have made and still have tomake and for the sheer joy of dancing. And now, fairwarning: I am coming for your story!

When I volunteered to take over the reinsof the Shag Rag, I wasn’t totally sure ofwhat I was getting myself into. (I’m still

not!) But I did think it might afford me a chance toget to know more about the club members…asdancers, of course, but also their lives off the dancefloor. We see each other on Wednesdays for a fewhours. But what goes on the rest of the time? Andwhat led this great group of people to becomeshaggers?

So this month I’ll take the easy way out and startwith my own story. But beware, sooner or later I amgoing to ask you about yours!

How I found my way to the clubAbout five or six years ago I was in the early stagesof figuring out life after the death of my husband of35 years. Those of you who’ve been through that(and I know a number of members have) know it’sbasically a time of trying to find out which way is up(or forward, or pretty much any positive direction).I had known Joan McKinney for many years in acompletely different area of our lives (we were andare part of a “Ladies Who Lunch” group thatformed many years ago). But I also knew that Joanwas a dancer and that she’d been through the sametragedy I had, and I needed her insight. I had grownup going to Cherry Grove Beach and watching theshaggers in Ocean Drive, always wishing I could bepart of that inner circle who could dance that

Last night I was at a Christmas party and one to the attendees brought his three children, ages 3, 5 and 7. Itwas a joy to watch them, how mannered, neatly dressed and polite, laughing and playful, something that onlylove and devotion to their welfare could have nurtured. But how it was achieved is the most amazing. Theirmother left them a couple of years ago and it is the father who deserves the credit, much more than youwould expect, for he has no legs. A wounded warrior. I walked with him and his three children as hewheeled himself back to his car when the party was over. He was a late arriver, so he was parked a blockaway. The three children got in the car and buckled up in the back seat and then dad swung himself from hiswheelchair into the driver’s seat, reached out, collapsed it, transferred it to the front passenger seat and droveaway.

As chairperson, I would like to give special thanks to everyone who participated in any and all ways in the18th Annual NVSC Shag-A-Thon! Your support makes this fundraising event possible. This event was a hit.I’ll have some stats for you in the February Shag Rag and hopefully some previews in a Hello Shagger email inbetween.

Thank you to:• the Capital Caring rep, Katie Tran-Lam, for coming out to speak at our event. • our guest DJ, Kathy K, for the fabulous music.• those persons or groups that donated $50 or more to Capital Caring. These Champions of Capital

Caring make it possible for NVSC to contribute to the efforts of our selected hospice and palliative caregroup.

• to our Registered Dance Participants, who committed to getting pledges and sponsors to makedonations to Capital Caring!

• and behind the scenes donations of items for the door prize and wine basket giveaways. We had someVERY nice items thanks to these generous folks!

I hope your holidays were wonderful and that you were able to ring in the new year in your favorite way. That’s a wrap for 2016; let the good times roll for 2017!

Dancingly,Sherri Wildoner
