Butch Houston's '62 and John Dorminey's '66 setter, Shadow Oak Bo, was recently featured in and on the cover of national magazine Garden and Gun. Bo is the first setter to win (twice in a row) the National Championship for field trialing bird dogs since 1901. Butch, of Nashville, Georgia, and John, of Tifton, Georgia, joint ventured Bo and will no doubt enter him in the 2015 Nationals. The magazine dubs Bo as the country's "finest bird dog."

Brothers,

I am happy to report that last year's matching gift challenge proposed by Doug Smith '82 was a big success! He pledged to match up to $25,000 to the 2013-2014 Epsilon of KA Campaign and we were able reach $16,780 of that goal. That's a record and about 25% more than we raised the year before. Thanks to everyone who contributed - especially Doug.

The contributions were particularly helpful with rush activities. In the last edition of the Epsilon Enquirer, we commented on the fact that Epsilon Chapter was struggling to fill the 42-occupant house. Thanks to a highly successful rush, the chapter gained 23 new members in the spring and three new members in the fall. The house is now full and Emory (our mortgage holder) is off of our back. Since the renovation about 12 years ago, this is the first time the house has been fully occupied.

In this edition, you will notice articles about our recently honored alumni - John Stephenson '70 and Jim Ferman '65. Congratulations to them both. On an unhappier note, Brother Randolph Thrower '34 passed away on March 8, 2014 right after the release of the last Enquirer, which paid tribute to him for celebrating his 100th birthday. Randolph was one of our most distinguished alumni.

The actives continue to distinguish themselves on campus and seem to be a responsible, quality group of guys.

Brothers,

The past year was filled with great accomplishments for Epsilon. We increased our chapter size with 23 new members in the spring and three new members in the fall. These young men are all eager to make great contributions to the Order.

Our philanthropic efforts included hosting a tennis tournament in the spring that raised $1,500 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. I know the incoming leaders of the fraternity will build upon our past success and take Epsilon to new heights.

I would like to thank my friends, family and brothers for their support during my tenure. I would also like to give special thanks to Andrew West '93, Fred Neely '66, James Edlen '09, Jonathan Swartz '94 and James Tallman '68 for their advice and guidance during the year.

Epsilon Alumni Treasurer Jonathan Swartz '94 and Eric Main '93 continue to manage the Mrs. Ida Shingles Assistance Fund. Mrs. Shingles served as the Epsilon cook from 1990 until 2006. Beyond her work as the chapter cook, she also served a maternal role to many of the brothers and is remembered fondly for her love and devotion to our chapter.

Over the past year, Epsilon alumni raised $2,500 to add to the Mrs. Ida Shingles Assistance

Fund thanks to an appeal sent out in December 2013. Epsilon thanks the following brothers who made donations this past year:

Malcolm R. Bruni '92 Robb D. Edmonds '93 Kevin P. Forster '96 JJ Gorsuch '95 William T. Mattice '01 Mark W. Maurer '98 James H. McFaddin '00 Arthur Patten '91 Gordon Kyle Sommers '97 Thomas E. Toombs '90

A portion of the funds were used to assist Mrs. Shingles with property taxes and electrical expenses related to rewiring her home. The current balance in the account is $2,300.

Donations are always welcome and can be made by mailing a check to:

Mr. Jonathan D. Swartz Bennett Thrasher PC One Overton Park 3625 Cumberland Blvd., Ste 1000 Atlanta, GA 30339

Mrs. Ida Shingles and her husband, Edward.

Thanks to the 105 brothers listed below, the 2013-2014 Epsilon of KA Campaign raised $16,780. A very generous gift match challenge offered by Brother Doug Smith '82 propelled the total to $33,010. In addition to paying for communication items (newsletters, appeal letters and website), funds were used to pay for composite restoration and three rush events - Halloween event at the Mansion, luncheon from Community BBQ and outing at Wildfire Paintball.

The actives' ability to host top notch rush events led to an outstanding 2014 rush with 26 new members and a full house. The actives are hopeful that their efforts coupled with the generous donations from alumni will lead to another favorable rush this spring. We currently have $12,300 in the account. Epsilon leadership is overwhelmed by the generosity of alumni brothers and will continue to spend donations carefully.

All alumni are encouraged to support annual Epsilon of KA campaigns. To make your pledge, visit www.epsilonofka.com and click "Support the Campaign." All pledges can be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or as a one-time gift.

John Stephenson '70 Receives 2014 Emory MedalAdaptation of article written by Michelle Valigursky and posted on October 6, 2014 in the Emory News Center

Jim Ferman '65 Sets High StandardsExcerpts from article titled, “Auto Mogul Ferman sets high standards” written by Yvette C. Hammett of the Tampa Bay Tribune and The Tampa Times 12 Oct 2014

The Emory Medal is the highest alumni award given by Emory University and recognizes alumni who represent the very best of Emory University. John Stephenson '70 received the top alumni honor on October 7, 2014.

The award typically recognizes alumni for their accomplishments in one of the following areas: distinguished service to Emory, the Emory Alumni Association (EAA), or a constituent alumni association;

achievement of the highest distinction in a field of learning, the arts, the professions, or public/community service; or compelling reasons why it would be particularly fitting for the EAA to honor the nominee.

John Stephenson is the executive director of the J. Bulow Campbell Foundation, a private charitable foundation established in 1940. The Atlanta philanthropy awards grants in education, human services, youth development, arts and cultural institutions and Christian-based charities.

Stephenson has spent his entire career in education administration and philanthropy, which earned him the honor of being named a 175 Emory Maker of History. Over the years, Stephenson counseled Emory students on their career aspirations, guided Emory officials in the course of his duties at the foundation and took every opportunity to reveal to others Emory's strengths and values.

While a student at Emory, Stephenson served Kappa Alpha Order as Number I, was president of the Emory Men's Glee Club and was among the founding members of Ad Hoc Productions. He was elected to Emory's Senior Society (DVS) as a member of the Class of 1970 and has remained close to DVS current and alumni membership, enjoying time with students and young alumni alike.

Stephenson serves in leadership roles for several Atlanta-based foundations and is actively involved in many community and scholarship organizations. Prior to joining the Campbell Foundation in 1985, Stephenson served Emory Presidents Sandy Atwood and Jim Laney for 12 years as assistant to the president, secretary of the university and vice president. He also served as Epsilon Chapter Advisor during this period prior to Fred Neely '66.

Stephenson is married to Lizanne Stephenson and has two sons, John W. Stephenson, Jr. and J. David Stephenson, two step-daughters, Claire Abreu Webber and Katherine Abreu, and three grandchildren.

Jim Ferman '65, CEO and president of Ferman Motor Car Co., received the University of Tampa's Ethics Award on October 17, 2014. The ethics award is given to an individual who demonstrates integrity, virtue and character in everyday personal and professional activities.

Ferman, 70, is a third-generation CEO, preceded by his father, James Ferman '37, and his grandfather, W. Frederick "Fred" Ferman, a former bicycle salesman who started the business in 1895. Ferman Motor Car Co. started out with one Chevrolet dealership and now includes more than 1,000 employees, 15 auto dealerships and five Harley-Davidson Motorcycle dealerships.

Born in Tampa, where he raised his own family, Ferman is a 1961 Plant High graduate who attended Emory University in Atlanta and received his bachelor's degree in business administration before spending six years in the Coast Guard Reserve.

"Not only does Ferman Motor Car Co. train its employees to seek the higher ethical ground, it also monitors its vendors for compliance," said Ferman. "Suppose a vendor wants you to make exaggerated claims to sell their product. You have to monitor to see if the advertising reflects your own sense of integrity."

Ferman's own sense of integrity comes from a combination

of family ethics, Christian faith and ethics he learned in business school, he said. "You try to do it right and make sure that others who represent you do it right. There's never a consideration of how to do something that is on the edge."

Ferman is in the Tampa Bay Business Hall of Fame, received the Florida Family Business of the Year Award from the John H. Sykes College of Business at the University of Tampa and in 2010 was presented with the Distinguished Citizen Award by the Gulf Ridge Boy Scouts of America.

John Stephenson '70 received the highest alumni award given by Emory University, The Emory Medal, on October 7, 2014.

Jim Ferman '65 received the University of Tampa's Ethics Award on October 17, 2014.

Several maintenance projects were completed at the chapter house in 2014. The kitchen floor was replaced with new tile and drains to provide durability and easy maintenance, new carpet was installed in the west landing, the interior and exterior received new paint and the outside of the house was pressure washed.

Additional improvements include the purchase of two new picnic tables, new tables and chairs in the dining room, and mitigation of drainage and lighting issues. Major upcoming improvements include a new make-up air unit and chiller and replacement of the basement tile.

Epsilon thanks Jeff Tate, Emory Associate Director of Facilities and Operations, for all of his efforts to maintain and improve the Mansion. Epsilon also thanks the following brothers for donating over $14,000 to the Epsilon Building Fund from December 1, 2013 through December 14, 2014:
