Shadow Art

Place a piece of art paper to a wall. Direct a strong light source onto the page. (A projector works well.) Stand side-on so that the shadow of your pro�le is centred on the art paper. You may need to adjust the distance of your light source so that you get a sharp image that �ts on the page. Have a friend trace your shadow on the art paper with pencil. Be careful: do not look into the light.

What to do:

Paint the shadow picture with black paint. Once dry, carefully cut around the image. On a second piece of art paper, divide the page up with lines. They can be straight or wavy. Keep the design simple. Colour the shapes within the design with brightly coloured oil pastels.

Display your artwork in your classroom as a frieze.

Points to remember: Don’t look into the light. Keep your patterns simple. Use plenty of colour in your background. Don’t use black in your background design.
