SHABBAT MATTERS
WALK WITH CAREWALK WITH CAREWALK WITH CAREWALK WITH CARE
Stumble, stagger, totter, teeter, dodder, blunder, hobble.
We’ve all had moments when we lose our balance. The prophet Hoshea (in our haftorah) uses such moments to describe the process of sin and repentance.
Israel, return to Hashem, your God; your sins have caused you to stumble. (14:2)
The prophet makes use of the metaphor of a path to describe life. (Our sages do likewise when coining the word halakhah to speak of Jewish law.) We are always moving. The question is if we are walking upon solid and secure ground. Sins are the banana peels that cause us to slip.
This metaphor provides the sinner with a method to repair his or her failure. No one intentionally trips. A person stumbles, because they aren’t paying attention. Repentance is to get up and be more aware. The Malbim notes that the prophet props up sinners by implying that they did not rebel or reject – rather, they erred.
As the haftorah continues, Hoshea reframes the metaphor of the path to address another type of fall.
“The ways of God are just – the righteous will walk in them, but sinners will stumble on them.”
Here a person stumbles not because of an impediment – but because of something internal. If a person sins often enough they will lose their ability to walk along God’s ways and will always fall. In repenting, we make sin into a banana peel that can be avoided and not a part of who we are.
In this season, as we reflect upon our lives, let us look for things that cause us to stumble. As we “return,” let us celebrate God’s ways and walk carefully in them.
