Recently, much has been written about the source and nature of anti-Semitism. Perhaps, the most famous Jewish text relating to anti-Semitism appears in Rashi’s commentary on our Torah portion, this week:

ו בכל לבו, אמר רבי שמעון בן יוחאי, הלכה היא בידוע קוישקהו. נקוד עליו; ויש חולקין בדבר הזה בבריתא דספרי, יש שדרשו נקדה זו שלא נש שעשו שונא ליעקב, אלא שנכמרו רחמיו באותה שעה ונשקו בכל לבו (ספרי במדבר):

AND HE (EISAV) KISSED HIM (YAAKOV) - dots are placed above the letters of this word, and a diGerence of opinion is - וישקהוexpressed in the Baraita of Sifre )בהעלותך( as to what these dots are intended to suggest: some explain the dotting as meaning that he did not kiss him with his whole heart; whereas R. Shimon bar Yochai said: “Is it not well-known that Eisav hated Yaakov? But at that moment his pity was really aroused and he kissed him with his whole heart.” (Sifrei Bamidbar 69.2)

The sages dispute the sincerity of Eisav’s embrace of Yaakov. The first opinion suggests that Eisav was insincere. R. Shimon bar Yochai argues that Eisav fully reconciled with Yaakov – but even in that moment of true brotherly love – hatred remained buried somewhere inside Eisav. In the rabbinic tradition, Eisav symbolizes gentile animosity toward Judaism, generally. Eisav’s hatred prefigures centuries of anti-Semitism.

In teaching, הלכה היא בידוע שעשו שונא ליעקב - it is a known “law” that Eisav hates Yaakov - the Midrash argues that anti-Semitism is not the fault of the Jewish people. Yet, at the very same time, R. Shimon bar Yochai argues that Jews can be genuinely loved by gentiles despite that permanent anti-Semitic reality.

Rabbi Moshe Feinstein questions why the Midrash uses the word halacha – law – to describe an emotional state? Rabbi Feinstein (Igrot Moshe CM 2:77) answers that the Midrash uses the term halacha intentionally. There are legal ramifications in the caution with which Jews should conduct themselves toward gentiles:

“As Jewish law does not change, the hatred of Eisav for Yaakov does not change. Even those who behave nicely [toward us] have within them a fundamental hatred. Therefore, we are forbidden to provoke them and to cause animosity.”

Modern Jewish deliberations over anti-Semitism often use the word “Never.” As we witness, today, the resilience of the world’s most ancient hatred, it behooves us to think deeply about the eternal quality of the lesson: עשו שונא ליעקב. We can wrestle with this hatred, but we cannot wish it away with naive slogans.
