iPR Process-Refractometerheads

For more than 25 years the inline Process Refractometers iPR from SCHMIDT+HAENSCH have been used successfully in the process analytical measuring technology.

IPRs measure the refractive index continuously and deter-mine thereby the concentration of dissolved solids insolution and/or the mixing proportion of binary or quasi-binary liquid mixtures.

The measurement is independent of turbidity, colour and absorption and is free of signal drifts, granting high preci-sion and better process control. The Brix measurement is temperature-compensated for the process stream conditions,generating reliably both high resolution and high precision.

The new generation of iPR measuring heads have high communication skills. The process sensors can visualize the measuring results as a single solution by data logger. It can be used as fully autonomous sensor or connected directly to a supervisory process control system or to the Universal Controller.

The new generation of iPR measuring heads gives also the possibility to construct an intelligent sensor stationwhich consists for example of several refractometers, tur-bidity measuring devices and CO

2 sensors. The Universal

Controller can also be used as a control desk for different other process sensors e.g. O

2, CO

2, pH or conductivity.

This special kind of characteristic in the communicationopens valuable economy possibilities for customers, because a separate display or special confi guration is not needed for each sensor.

Universal ControllerThe Universal Controller can be used as a process controlstation where no supervisory system is yet installed.It can communicate, visualise, log and confi gure severaliPR heads.

The measurements are processed by the Universal Control-ler and can be visualized by the display with touch screen or be displayed over analog signals (4-20 mA), Ethernet or serial interface to the recorder, printer, programmable logi-cal controller (PLC) and distributed control systems (DCS). The outputs can be used for linkage of remote controllingand used by limit value switches for pump- or valves switches.Thus the direct process real time control is possible.

The new generation of iPR measuring heads are made of stainless steel and contain a prism of YAG or artifi cial sap-phire which is both mechanically very stably and chemicallyresistant against acids, sludges and solvent. It fulfi ls alsothe requirements of the food industry. The standard seal material is Viton, special material is however available(e.g. Kalrez).The iPR can be equipped with a special fl ow-rate-top madeof Tefl on for high concentrated acids, highly corrosive sub-stances and for processes of those the contact with stain-less steel is to avoid.

The iPRs can be incorporated in a simple and fl exible wayinto piping, mixing tanks, reaction boilers, cook apparatusesor evaporators by using a diverse range of welding fl anges.The preferred process connection from SCHMIDT+HAENSCHis the Varivent inline housing. This type of connection provi-des maximum fl exibility. It has hygienic approval, can handlepressures up to 15 bar’s*and holds no dead spaces around the measuring head. The standard installation enables the use of pipe pigs.

The iPR is also available as an ex-proof version. Using thewater cooling connected to the iPRs makes it suitable for high temperatures up to 150 °C. For processes, where the substances cause fouling on the prism, an optional cleaningdevice using water, steam or solvent is available.For processes where such additions are not allowed, apatented ultra sonic cleaning device is available for the Varivent mounting.For high refractive index application e.g. phenol resin, a model with a measuring range from 1.40000 up to 1.60000 RI is available.*(depending on the fl ange connection)
