Snap-OnDentures

We hear all the t imefrom our denture patientshow life changing dental im-plants are. Patients becomevery emotional when theydescribe the positive changeeffective treatment has madefor their quality of life. In-deed, one of the greatestmodern advances in denturetherapy is the “snap-on” den-ture. Consensus groups atMc Gill University in 2002have even called it the “stan-dard of care” for lower den-tures. However, sadly weoften meet patients that havewasted money on implantsplaced in other locations,sometimes with much careand precision. A few tipswhen contemplating implantsto control your dentures are:

1. When your teeth arefailing, don’t have any im-plants placed until a sensibleplan is made for your wholemouth considering the longterm prognosis of the rest ofyour teeth. Once placed,they cannot be removed eas-ily and if the rest of yourteeth around them are lost itmay not be feasible to replacemore teeth. Implants installedfor crowns usually do notwork for dentures and visaversa.

2. Implants for upperdentures are usually not nec-essary for an effective result ifthe denture is properly moldedto fit well. This can be a hugesavings to you by eliminating

the expense of unnecessarynumber of implants and thecost of their future mainte-nance.

3. How many implantsare needed? As few as it takesto get an acceptable result—

usually only two if placed inthe correct orientation for thelower denture. More implantsusually means more initial costand more future maintenancecost for only a small amountof additional satisfaction. Thisis a documented by a pub-lished study of thousands ofdenture wearers that reportedtheir satisfaction after twoimplants and then after twoadditional implants, showingmore bang for your buckwith the first two and only alittle more after the secondtwo.

4. Dental implants notplaced parallel don’t allow thesnap-on mechanism to workproperly and require moremaintenance cost in the future.

5. Dental implants notplaced deep enough do notleave room for the requiredthickness for denture teeth tofit over them—this results in athin denture that is weak andbreaks and leads to more re-placement cost.

Upto this point they had used nosugar in their meals, opting tosave this precious commodityfor when they arrived at theirnew ‘home.’ The children wereecstatic as both Eligio and Retacommented that in ten days theywould be in America. The jour-

Even though the weatherwas cool, the sun shone and oc-casionally mirages of expanses

of water would ap-pear in the distance.About 2pm the fam-ily came upon a riverthat was flowing in

their independence on the 4th.In 1870, the U.S. Congressmade Independence Day a fed-eral holiday. Over the years, nota whole lot has changed in theways Americans celebrate theircountry’s birthday. For manyof us, the 4th of July is the per-fect time to fire up the grill,watch the local parades and en-joy fireworks. I don’t knowabout you, but I am so gratefulthat I and my family live in afree country where we canchoose the type of employment,schooling and religion we desirealong with so many other free-doms other counties do not al-low. I am grateful to ThomasJefferson and all the committeemembers that prepared andsigned the Declaration of Inde-pendence. I am grateful theyhad the courage to break freeand form a new nation. Withthat said, let’s all start planningon how we want to celebrate theupcoming 4th of July and getready for a perfectly patrioticday!

Star Spangled Berry Pie(Use your favorite pie crust

recipe or choose to purchase piedough from your local grocer)

5 cups fresh raspberries,blueberries, strawberries orblackberries (can be a mixtureof all or 5 cups of one)

2 tsp. lemon juice1 cup sugar½ cup flour1 Tbsp. milk and extra

sugar for sprinkling on top of piePlace fruit in a large bowl;

drizzle with lemon juice. In asmall bowl, mix sugar and flour

together. Sprinkle over berriesand toss gently to coat. Pourfruit mixture into unbaked pieshell. Using dough for the topcrust, cut out stars with cookiecutters together with 1 ½ inchstrips of dough for the stripes.Arrange stars and stripes on pie.Brush top of pie with milk andsprinkle with sugar. Bake at 375degrees for 40-50 minutes oruntil crust is nicely browned andfilling is bubbly. Cool on a rack.

My name is Dr MarcosReyes. This week I willgive an overview of glaucoma andin the upcoming weeks I will coverits management and treatment.

Glaucoma damage occurswhen the pressure of the eye is el-evated. The higher the pressure themore vision is lost and this loss con-tinues until the pressure of the eye iscontrolled with treatment. Glaucomais actually a group of diseases, all ofwhich damage the optic nerve caus-ing permanent vision loss, hencethe need for constant monitoring toaid in prevention of vision loss.

In glaucoma the elevated eyepressure puts strain on the opticnerve. The ‘optic nerve’ is really abundle of 1.2 million separate indi-vidual nerve fibers which gather to-gether at the ‘optic nerve’ beforeentering the skull and connecting tothe brain. Each individual nerve fi-ber makes up a small part of ourvision, similar to light pixels on a tele-vision which are small, but togethermake up the images on our televi-sions.

Glaucoma is the second lead-ing cause of blindness worldwide.In the USA it is estimated that over3 million Americans have glaucomabut due to its’ silent nature only halfof those know they have it. Glau-coma is usually painless and with-out symptoms until it gets so badpeople notice the loss of vision. This

TheAcademy is completely unique inSouthern Utah in its ability to greatlyimprove the quality of life of chil-dren and families through participa-tion in the performing arts.

Life skills learned throughAcademy participation are self-con-fidence and emotional intelligence,communication and public speak-ing, creativity and problem solving.Through instruction in scene studyand improvisation they will learn co-operation and team building. Study-ing unusual instruments and creat-ing music as well as learning to singsolo and in groups will build respon-sibility and commitment. Creativedance and various art projects aregateways to self-acceptance, appre-ciation and respect for the unique-ness they see in themselves and oth-ers.

The Academy’s primary ob-jective gives young people the skillsto not only cope with the world theylive in, but to teach them to over-come their fears, take responsiblerisks, and be leaders in their com-munity.

For those who need a sec-ond (or third) computer, thereare a lot of options. If money isnot an issue, you can get a goodquality new desktop or laptopcomputer for around $700.Availability is limited at the bigbox stores such as Walmart,BestBuy, Staples and Costcoand most have a wait time in-volved, but if you are willing towait a bit or talk to you com-puter professional, you may beable to get one you like in aslittle as a week or two.

If, like most of us, you arewatching your budget or are un-sure of what future income andemployment might look like, youmay want to save a bit. Thereare new computers out there inthe $400 range but they are gen-erally very limited as to speedand/or capability. Many manu-facturers are selling Pentiumand even Celeron processors intheir low-end Windows 10 ma-chines. It makes them cheaperbut they are not very fast andmany are not upgradeable ifyour needs change. You can alsoget Chromebook laptops in thatrange or even less, but be awarethat they are not compatiblewith programs like MicrosoftOffice (Word, Excel,PowerPoint, etc.) and otherWindows software. They docome with a good browser and

a fair office package with astripped-down word processor,spreadsheet and a few otherthings. You can often pick upused Chromebooks that arenot very old as many people

tire of the limitations after ayear or so and sell them cheapto put the money towards aWindows computer.

That brings us to othertypes of used, refurbished or“renewed” computers. Thereare a lot of older computers outthere that simply won’t runWindows 10 sufficiently well(or at all) to make users happy.Many of these can have theirlife extended by installingLinux Operating System onthem. Linux is a free Operat-ing System that works with lesspower and speed. It comeswith a good browser (Firefox),an office suite similar to theChromebook capability (LibreOffice or Open Office) and anumber of other worthwhileprograms. You can pick themup very inexpensively. I actu-ally give them away to thosein need if they contact me. Ihate to see things go to waste(or the landfill) if they still haveuse in them.

Many other used comput-ers can be upgraded to Win-dows 10. Some of them are

fairly slow but will work forbasic browsing, email,facebook and school work.You can pick them up at yardsales or refurbished by techslike me for around $100-$150.You can also get very goodused computers with Windows10 installed and are covered byanywhere from a few monthsto 3 years of warranty fromtechs that know where to getthem. They are typicallyaround $300 or, if you want aSolid State Hard Drive (SSD)and a large data drive (HD) in-stalled, they are usually about$400. They have a lot of lifeleft in them and perform verywell compared to some of theslower new computers on themarket.

If you are a Mac fan,prices are a bit higher for allof the above, but you canfind used Mac computers for$300 to $700 depending onspeed, power and age. Thatcan save you quite a fewbucks over buying new.

It is good to check theactual processor benchmarkspeed (see earlier article orcall for into) before buyingany computer (new or used)since there is such a varietyof computers on the marketand some of them that seemlike they would be fast arenot. Do your homework andas always, remember to makesure you have at least onebackup (preferably two) ofanything important to you.
