This quarter has had special devotion to innovation in every sense of the word. Maintaining our focus on quality assurance and the highest service level, we are adding to that new powerful product releases, still more competent and highly qualified resources and we are expanding our SGM subsidiary platform.

For SGM, the keywords for our products are LED, IP65, extremely powerful output, perfect whites and saturated colours – and we do not compromise.

The G-range is expanding. We now launch the groundbreaking G-Spot in a framing version; G-Profile. The framing shutter module offers the option of combining framing techniques with five rotating gobos and opens for animation and interaction when framing is used, thus enhancing the lighting designer’s means for performance for e.g. TV productions, theatres and architectural installations.

I have always been a firm believer in developing the best possible products that do not cannibalise each other. Of course, the same applies for the G-range. Therefore, a G-Spot can be transformed into a G-Profile by a simple interchange of gobo and framing modules (and vice versa), matching the very need of the lighting designer.

Extending the lead of the product line and following in the footprints of the G-Spot and G-Profile’s great technology, I can reveal that we have something extraordinary up our sleeves that will be announced later this year…

A new generation is in production with the P-2, Q-2 and Q-2 W. These units are quickly becoming new industry standards with their exceptionally small and robust chassis combined with an extremely powerful output. They each offer individually controllable segments, providing wide-ranging effect and colour combinations for any lighting design.

Our US activities are continuously increasing, and we are currently establishing SGM US in our endeavour to further strengthen our ability to offer on-time assistance at any time, any place. Recently, we had the immense honour to be the chosen manufacturer of lighting equipment for the world leading information technology developer at a prestigious launch. Besides the obvious feeling of pride, this for me emphasises that SGM is the one to watch…!

Lastly, I am opening the doors to our new headquarters and production facilities in Denmark. I invite you to pay us a visit. We would be delighted to welcome you.

G-Spots on a Mission in Romania...

SGM partner, production company FIVE’S, is providing full technical production services as well as stage, sound and lighting design for the Bergenbier Friendship Tour in Romania. This summer festival covers ten major cities with two shows per weekend, bringing people together with the message of building up friendships and spreading love and happiness throughout the world.

Bergenbier is one of the leading Romanian beer brands and its tour features the top musical trends and bands in Romania and expects a total audience of 500,000 visitors.

The mission for FIVE’S has been to select the most sustainable technology to support this show concept. For this general manager Andrei

Popea and his team decided to include 6 SGM G-Spot moving heads, 4 P-5 wash lights, 12 X-5 white LED strobes and 12 SixPack blinders.

Opting for an SGM LED solution has its clear benefits according to Andrei Popea. “Our choice is based on the advantages of a longer fixture lifetime and less maintenance, brighter colours and low energy consumption.”

The SixPacks are rigged on the truss as backdrop lighting decoration, the X-5s provide powerful strobe effect on stage, the P-5s wash the branding of Bergenbier and the G-Spots are placed on the front of the stage – fulfilling their purpose as an all-weather unit.

“We mainly selected the G-Spot for its IP65rating, taking the opportunity to place them safely on the downstage. We have been searching a long time for a fixture like this, that brings together a high output and an optical system capable of covering a broad spectrum of angles – from a narrow spot to a wide even wash,” says Andrei Popea.

The rock and roll segment is, however, only one focus area for the company FIVE’S. Their next step is to deploy the SGM portfolio for theatrical productions due to “the quiet operation of the G-Spot, the design capabilities of the P-5 and the natural colours of the SixPack.”

SGM NEWS No. 7 2014

The Palace of Arts - Budapest in Hungary (locally

named Művészetek Palotája, abbreviated Müpa)

is one of the most prestigious concert halls in

Central and Eastern Europe, designed by leading

architect Mr. Gábor Zoboki in 2005.

Its previous colour-changing lighting system,

installed a decade ago, had become outdated

and did not provide the deep, highly saturated

colouration desired by the architect. Therefore,

with TriGránit Management Ingatlankezelö és

Hasznosító Kft. on board as investor, a tender

was initiated for modernisation of the façade

lighting system, which SGM won clearly by

engaging with local distributor, Zaj System

House Trading.

Their executive director, Tamás Fazekas,

explains: “As this is a stand-alone building on

the banks of the Danube, which is bordered by

one of the busiest bridges in the city, all of the

façades are of equal importance and the lighting

system must concentrate on each of them

without any exclusion.”

Different lighting manufacturers participated

in the tender bid and thus a shootout was held

last autumn on two chilly evenings where the

products were put through their paces. Zaj

System House submitted a complete projection

design for the shootout in cooperation with Mr.

László Vértessy, owner of Tissy Lighting Ltd. “The

dominance of the SGM P-5 was unquestionable

from the beginning,” says Tamás Fazekas. “No

other product had such lighting power, which

was very important because of the high level of

surrounding street lighting and light pollution

coming from different sources.”

He continues: “The best minute came when Mr.

Csaba Káel, the Chief Executive Officer of Müpa,

and Mr. Zoboki came to check the demo; they

were excited and happy, realising how nice their

building would look with the new illumination

technology.”

The installation phase

Zaj System House, celebrating its 20th anniver-

sary as an SGM distributor, is accustomed to

installing permanent outdoor lighting systems.

They can boast a vast reference list including

the design and installation of the façade of one

of the biggest shopping malls in Central Europe

(Aréna Pláza) in 2007, illuminated by 69 pieces

of Palco 3 which were the top choice at that

time – and the predecessor of today’s P-5. The

reliability of this successful installation became

a perfect reference during the tender process.

After the official order came in for the P-5

wash lights, the removal of the former fixtures,

the modification of the structures, the design

and fitting of the new electrical system, the

installation, setting and testing were all executed

by Zaj System House’s team, led by Mr. József

Zsemberi, one of the company owners.

90 P-5 wash lights are used for the extensive

façade illumination. 48 of these are custom-

made in silver colour to be placed on 5- and

8-meter high columns (2 or 4 units per column)

to resemble the former fixtures, although the

smaller shape and size of the P-5s creates a

clear benefit. The remaining SGM wash lights

are placed on terraces, roofs and stands in

the garden - three pieces are even mounted

at 18-meter height in the atrium, which were

installed by industrial ‘alpinists’ as no one else

could achieve this height.

P-5 provides the bright, homogeneous colours desired

The objective was achieved by introducing the

P-5 to Müpa; a LED technology based, small

sized, elegant, custom colour finished, low

power consumption – but very high power

output fixture, which offers different projection

angles and fulfils the architect’s original dream

to turn the complete building into any deep and

saturated, or light pastel colour desired.

“As the old system could not produce sufficient

light power in deep, saturated colours, in recent

years the building has mostly been illuminated

in white or very light colour, e.g. yellow. The new

possibilities provided by the enormous power of

the P-5’s started the fantasy and creativity of

the architects and operators,” Tamás Fazekas

explains.

“We can emphasise that all the expectations of

the look, colour saturation and homogeneity

have been met, and that the client and the

architect are satisfied, while those passing the

building every day are happy to see this nice

illumination.

"We saw an enthusiastic Facebook post written by a 10-year-old girl living in an apartment block opposite the building, declaring how happy it makes her to see such nice colours applied to the building.”

Zaj System House has already moved onto

new installations with SGM equipment, where

among other projects, an outdoor stage is being

installed with various pieces of the new Q-7 and

the SixPack blinder.

SGM helps make UEP’s Chilfest 2014 a huge success

8

Chilfest 2014 - the three day music extravaganza

staged in the picturesque Hertfordshire,

UK countryside, and produced by leading

production industry technical solution specialist

Universal Event Productions (UEP) - was another

resounding success.

Company founder Steve Butcher maintains a

cutting edge inventory of lighting, sound and

video equipment, which he showcases at this

event, and several months ago he invested

substantially in SGM’s SixPack pixel blinders, XC-5

RGB colour strobes and P-5 wash lights. These

were deployed in production lighting designer

Simon Maddison’s imaginative concept, along

with four of SGM’s award-winning high powered

G-Spot profiles.

The latter were placed on the PA wings on

either side of stage to boost low level front

lighting across the crowd - which also served

as a great atmosphere builder. As one of the

most exposed fixtures, its IP65 rating proved

essential, as the weather was typically erratic.

The event brought the very best music from the

1980s - indie rock from the Boomtown Rats, Big

Country, Heaven 17, etc; classic pop from Jason

Donovan, Boney M, Go West - and contemporary

pop with Union J, 911, Stooshi and more to the

leafy heartlands of Tring.

Chilfest was started last year initially as a novel

and interesting way of celebrating UEP’s 15th

year of successful operation. As the idea gained

momentum, it took on the format of a full scale

two day family focused music festival.

It went down so well that Steve Butcher and

his team decided to repeat the exercise, adding

an extra day - together with a larger, 15-metre

Orbit-style stage, a rolling riser system to

optimise the changeover times and some other

new features.

This all helped to show off the SGM lighting to

its best advantage. Maddison had set out to

provide a good and practical house system with

the flexibility and dynamics to cover all artists

playing, providing a host of interesting looks

and scenes … with plenty of headroom.

It was essential that the lighting also worked

well in daylight as the majority of the action

took place when it was still light.

The six SGM SixPack pixel blinders were installed

downstage and used for audience illumination

and 10 of UEP’s new SGM XC-5 RGB LED strobes

were rigged above and used for classic strobe

effects as well as floods, excelling at both

applications!

Butcher concludes: “We were all delighted with

this year’s results. We had a trouble free event

and brought new standards of excellence and

production values to a truly boutique festival

setting that you would normally only expect on

much larger shows.”

SGM has announced the appointment of LTT Lighting & Theatre Technology (LTT Sp. z o.o., ltt.com.pl) as its new sole Polish distributor.

LTT, Poland’s leading, and longest serving distributor of professional lighting fixtures, consoles and other technology, say they are excited to be offering products from what they describe as “one of the world’s most promising LED fixture manufacturers”.

The relationship between LTT and SGM’s CEO Peter Johansen, in fact dates back to 1997, and the latter states, “I have always enjoyed a fruitful relationship with the company and I look forward to working with them once again in this new era.”

LTT say that the main attraction to them has been the speed of SGM’s evolution. “To stay relevant in the market requires the ability to anticipate future developments in technology and customer needs,” says LTT commercial director, Paweł Mroziűski. “It has become clear that the foreseeable future belongs to LED fixtures with their reliability, efficiency and excellent colour mixing. That’s why we were

searching for a partner that offered the most innovative solutions in this technology — and in our opinion SGM A/S is precisely that company,”

LTT’s strategy on the Polish market has always been to promote not only leading brands, but also companies that show exceptional potential to become market leaders. “Our new partnership with SGM continues this strategy,” Mr. Mroziűski continues. “We are impressed with SGM’s distinct focus on LED technology, and we believe that the company has all the right prerequisites to become the global leader in LED stage and architectural lighting.”

“SGM’s current product portfolio boasts excel-lent design and solid quality, with innovative features such as IP65 water resistance. We are confident that under Peter Johansen’s leader-ship, the company will be able to react quickly to new challenges and adapt to customers’ changing needs, without the inertia typical of oversized corporations.”

Finally, he says, LTT is excited to once again be bringing the ‘Made in Denmark’ quality and design to Polish customers.”

Lawrence Ryan of Eagle Eye Studios was tasked

with designing and programming a show control

interface for the beautiful fountain in Delhi called

Fountain of Oneness.

The idea behind this unique architectural

structure originates from the Guru himself as

a symbol of people from different religions,

cultures and languages coming together in one

place. The structure is made up of adults and

children holding hands in a circular formation,

so large that the audience can walk around or

through the fountain. As a centrepiece, a huge

sphere represents the world, surrounded by

worldwide unity. Great care has gone into making

it structurally sound, with the key focus being the

huge weight of the structure and the strong winds

in the area of Delhi. Situated inside a huge pool

area with many water fountains, lighting effects

add a further unique dimension to the frequent

music shows.

The vision of the LD

As lighting designer, Lawrence Ryan envisioned

a full interface for the operators to easily test

and manually run all the lighting and fountains in

the venue, while also choreographing an entire

show using Medialon record DMX features and a

Jands Vista lighting controller. A composed piece

of music incorporating the Guru talking, with

beautiful vocal sections, and the deployment of

12 SGM G-Spot moving heads offer the feeling of

spirituality through sound and light.

“Initially I was looking for standard intelligent

lighting effects from moving head units, but I

ended up with something really quite special

and was truly impressed with the colours and

movement of the units,” says Lawrence Ryan,

adding that they had considered many different

options for this installation.

SGM technology as the road ahead

The choice was unambiguous when this IP65 all-

weather moving head was presented. “SGM had

just launched the product and I was the first to

get delivery of these very special units,” the

designer continues. Besides the IP rating, finding

a fixture based on LED technology has its clear

benefits: “The LED output moves us away from

the conventional lamp and ballast set-up which

hopefully will give a much better life span for the

units.”

The 12 G-Spot moving heads from SGM are placed

on the edge of the water feature. With a square

pool area segmented into four areas, three units

are located at the edge of each area, providing

a broad spectrum of bright colours across the

fountain.

It was important for Lawrence Ryan not to make

this look like a regular show. The choreography

itself resembles a cross between architectural

lighting and effect lighting, with attention to

its statement of the ‘oneness’. “For a start the

audience can actually walk through the structure

and around the area, and we had to keep this

in mind when programming. The show can be

watched from many vantage points, giving the

audience excellent repeat value and allowing

them to see other effects which were not visible

from positions previously,” he explains.

As a tourist attraction and a sanctuary for people

from all walks of life, this fountain appeals to a

large number of visitors. It offers three shows

each night during religion celebrations and two to

three shows every hour from Thursday to Sunday.

Already the designer has been commissioned to

design and programme another show later this

year as this initial production has been a huge

success.

Powerful and bright

Deployment came simple to Lawrence Ryan,

who describes the units as “very easy to set up

and simple to upgrade with firmware via DMX.”

However, he pinpoints the best feature of the

G-Spot with a firm statement: “I was totally blown

away with the colour output of these LED units.”

Lawrence Ryan is a busy man; having just finished

the Singapore Sentosa night time spectacular, The

Wings Of Time, he is preparing for three installs

in China including “something really special at the

Great Wall of China”. And he confidently predicts

a bright future ahead for the G-Spot:

“All up and coming installations in India will be

using these units for sure.”

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas presented its lighting designer Christopher Lose with the ultimate challenge: find a strong and stable fixture that could be hung at the pool-side stage all year round. Chris’ answer quickly resulted in an order for ten G-Spot LED moving heads for movement, beam versatility and patterns and four Q-7 RGBW for wash and strobing.

Chris explains: “The Pool Stage is a treacherous environment for lighting gear. It is an outdoor stage in Las Vegas. The temperature reaches 120 degrees [Fahrenheit - equal to 50 degrees Celsius] in the summer and below freezing in the winter. Las Vegas rarely rains but when it does it comes without notice. There is no time for crew to be dropping lighting fixtures on short notice. We needed 10 spare fixtures to service our 10 previous moving lights and I was looking for a fixture that we could hang all year round. I needed a fixture that was bright, versatile, would impress guest LDs and could stand up to the weather. The G-Spots and

Q-7s were exactly what I was looking for. On top of that, Rehab, Hard Rock Hotel’s weekly pool party is famous for party goers spraying champagne. We have lost a few fixtures in the past to stray corks or being drenched in champagne. I needed a fixture that could handle tourist abuse,” he says continuing with a smile “the G-Spot is able to stand all of the abuse that our partygoers can throw at it.”

Introduction to the strong SGM portfolio The first time Chris was introduced to the SGM portfolio was through a SGM US representative, who left two X-5 strobes in his rig for comparison with the hotel’s conventional strobes. Instantly, Chris became impressed by the benefits of the LED engine and the output of the unit, which was as powerful as the conventional but with a fraction of the power consumption. Once he saw the recordings of the G-Spot immersed in a fountain, his mind was made up. “There is no other product on the market that can do what the G-Spot does. It's that simple. Once I discovered the G-Spot, I

15

knew I had to show everyone how powerful it was,” declares the designer.

The ten G-Spot fixtures are hung on a 19ft by 30ft (5.8 by 9.1 meter) 20 inch (50 centimetre) truss structure around the pool side stage where they provide the multifunctional advantages that they are originally designed to fulfil. “I needed an LED fixture that could replace a fully functional arc source moving spot fixture. I needed colour mixing, zoom, colour correction, plenty of gobos, smooth movement and plenty of horse power. I'm also limited to a 100 amp service out at the pool. The G-Spots met every requirement,” Chris comments.

The fixtures are controlled via DMX on a GrandMA1 Light Console, using the G-Spots in normal 24 channel mode and the Q-7s in full 8 channel mode.

Clear benefitsHaving installed the SGM products at Hard Rock Hotel, Chris’ excitement about the IP-rated, LED fixtures persists. “The G-Spots are as bright as I had hoped they would be. The Q-7s are even brighter than I imagined. Their colours are very impressive. They make a beautiful wash light and then turn into a strobe immediately. My crew and I were blown

away as soon as we turned them on.”

As for the G-Spot, their IP65 rating is essential to Chris. “There are plenty of fixtures on the market that have the same feature set as the G-Spot. But none of them can do it in the rain. There isn't a single other fixture on the market that can claim to be champagne resistant,” he adds.

LED lighting is also becoming an increasingly important factor for the hotel, which is very energy conscious in their selection of equipment and therefore moving as many fixtures as possible over to LED, including all of the fixtures in the entertainment venues and public areas.

And the future seems bright for SGM fixtures as Chris sums up his assessment. “I can see both of these fixtures taking over a huge part of the market. There are so many outdoor installations that have been waiting for these fixtures to come along. I see several indoor applications as well. I used to be afraid to place floor lights in certain applications fearing that they would get drinks spilled on them or kicked. I would not be afraid to put a G-Spot in any of those positions,” concludes the now self-pronounced ‘G-Spot handler’.

SGM NEWS No. 7 2014

Lighting designer Uffe Jansson of Hysterical Design has taken on the task of delivering Kent’s two festival shows as part of their new concept ‘Kentfest’, where the Swedish band, now celebrating its 24th anniversary, provides its vision of how a festival should be.

Kent is the festival’s headline act, and Uffe Jansson was determined to create a lightshow that matched their status. “For me the important thing is to accentuate the band’s music with lighting to make it a great concert. It is a fine line to use the right amount of effects for each song, when you have about 600-700 fixtures,” he informs.

Besides the regular festival rig, Jansson added about 120 P-5 wash lights and 35 XC-5 colour strobes exclusively for Kent’s performance. “My goal was to incorporate the entire stage, which is 80 metres wide, as one complete piece for the audience to view instead of just the 15 metre opening at the centre of the stage,” says the designer. The large illumination surface he was handed was the result of the set designers’ concept of creating the look of an abandoned industrial site, covering the scaffold with different fabrics and plastic materials in shades of grey and white.

For this purpose he deployed P-5s with different spread angles (21 and 43 degrees), placing

some to light up the scaffold, fabrics and plastic material on the outside of the main stage, others for the Kentfest flags and again more as blinders, filling the entire width of the stage, as well as front and side lighting for the band.

For this impressive and powerful lightshow, there was no alternative to LED lighting. Jansson explains: “LED was the only option. I needed a powerful RGB fixture that could stand outdoor conditions. Maximum light output and vibrant colours were the most important criteria.”

A product rating of IP65 was also essential to Jansson, since the shows are held in open air. And further to the massive output and the vibrant colours provided by the P-5 wash light, the strobe function was a definite plus to the designer, who reveals that there will be a ‘next time’ of deploying the P-5.

C&C Lightway Inc. has been SGM’s Korean distributor since 2009, renewing their agreement in 2012 following the SGM transition to Denmark. At this year’s 24th KOBA show in Seoul, which as always focused on innovative broadcasting, audio and lighting equipment, C&C Lightway demonstrated the relevant SGM portfolio on their stand for more than 50,000 people who attended during the four-day event.

As Korea’s leader in stage lighting, broadcast studio lighting and architectural and landscape lighting, the company provided a broad range of services for their clients, and consequently experienced a successful show with an im-pressive product line up.

On display were the LS-4.6 LED screen, the G-Spot moving head, the P-5 wash light, the Q-7 RGB wash blind strobe and the two LED strobes: X-5 and XC-5.

“The most impressive display was the G-Spot. We made a water box and put the G-Spot inside with water shooting at it,” explains Hwan-Soo

Chung. “Everyone stopped and took photos of it.” He stated that he was extremely satisfied with the many inquiries during the show.

He continues: “The G-Spot sets new standards, with its IP65 function making it completely unnecessary to use domes. And the P-5 wash light provides an impressive brightness in its homogeneous colours.”

With many projects and installations in the pipeline, Hwan-Soo Chung sums up: “With the interest shown in SGM’s products we have high expectations for the future.”

G-Spot goes NorthSide Opting for the G-Spot is in line with NorthSide’s desire to achieve a zero CO2 level. Based on LED technology, the G-Spot helps NorthSide reach this target with its much lower power consumption compared to conventional discharge lamps, meanwhile providing an IP65 rated maintenance free fixture which will not succumb to the sand and dirt of a buzzing festival site.

Another advantage for this innovative music festival has been the ease and flexibility of setting up the G-Spot, which does not require expensive protective solutions such as domes or other constructions to shelter it from rain.

The P-5 wash light also made its reappearance at NorthSide and did the job perfectly, providing a bright wash with soft colour changing. Thus, 14 of these units illuminated the containers from below.

SGM and NorthSide both look forward to expanding their cooperation in 2015 and thereby taking NorthSide one step closer to their sustainability

target.

The Danish NorthSide Festival held its fifth consecutive summer event in Aarhus, maintaining its successful growth with a record music budget, more square feet than ever before and new activities for the 35,000 visitors.

Another newcomer to NorthSide this year was the G-Spot moving head, proudly striking its beams high, and painting the city sky. Six of these new moving heads were placed as centrepieces on top of the highest containers in the area to draw the attention. This particular area is the festival’s recreational site, situated between Blue Stage and Green Stage with 6-metre-high containers placed in the shape of a horseshoe, which enclose food shops and relaxation facilities with a view of the entire site.

The purpose for the G-Spot was to create soft moving light for this recreational area and sporadically illuminate the shops, but the fixtures also provided additional visual effects to be seen from afar. The appealing light effects certainly drew additional people in.

UK-based lighting production and installation specialists, Utopium, recently invested in a range of new event lighting technologies with sustainable, creative benefits to clients. This included placing a significant order with SGM UK for their revolutionary P-5 (LED wash light) and X-5 (LED strobe).

Utopium’s six figure investment has added significantly to the choice of modern LED lighting the company can offer event organisers and lighting designers. The company’s new SGM inventory was soon deployed on a major series of open air concerts: the inaugural Bristol Summer Series for Metropolis Music.

Utopium’s managing director Colin Bodenham comments: “Having listened to clients, applied our experience and researched recent product releases, we’ve added some revolutionary lights to

our inventory, notably from SGM. LED technology means improved sustainability and economy through reduced power consumption and being small means less transport and weight loading. The colours and output from these relatively small fittings are incredible and we are all looking forward to having less weight to rig in roofs or truss.”

Fully aware that the cutting edge SGM P-5 and X-5 have already established themselves on multiple world tours, he added, “They combine an impressive array of technical advancements to improve creative and control options, reliability, with vastly improved power consumption to output ratio.”

Helping to enhance the already stunning setting of the Bristol Harbourside, where the stage was framed by a tall ship, the Kaskelot, SGM’s X-5s

joined the artillery for Paolo Nutini’s headlIne show at Bristol Summer Series, prior to his appearance at Glastonbury.

Colin Bodenham and John Newman combined their skills to design and deliver the stage lighting design along with architectural lighting using the canvas of the amphitheatre building and Tall Ships in the harbour. The X-5 LED strobes offered increased creativity with reduced weight loading and power consumption.

On the evidence of this, he said the purchase was fully justified, explaining: “These new SGM X-5 strobes are proving a fantastic addition to our inventory. They are a dream with regards to the creative options they add and both incoming LDs commented on how much they liked them.”

SGM’s X-5 LED strobes deliver the same output as conventional strobes from one fifth of the power (at 4 amps) and create unique effects never delivered before by a strobe. Housing 2,970 LEDs with power consumption of just 360W, it is designed into three individual cells to boost creativity.

The SGM P-5 is low-profile fixed, rectangular, full RGBW LED wash light, with an IP65 rating, making it suitable for outdoor architectural use. It establishes its green credentials by providing an efficacy factor of 52 lumens per watt (channelled through various lens options).

In conclusion, Bodenham said: “Clients who understand what we have bought are already excited that these lights will be available to them as we go through a busy summer of festivals, concerts, product launches and corporate events.”

A blinding summer for SGM on German festival circuit After the successful major events of last year,

SGM showed it could equip virtually all open

air events in the German-speaking countries

during the recent outdoor summer season.

This year saw mainly the new Q-7W (cool white)

and Q-7 (RGBW) deployed at major festivals — as

well as, of course, a number of G-Spots.

The season kicked off with the mega-event Rock am Ring, where Blackbox from Berlin integrated

more than 40 SixPacks and 12 Q-7 W as backlight

and pixel blinder into the stage design of German

rapper, Cro. Similarly, large amounts of P-5 and

Q-7 W were installed in the stage roof, as well as

for the video tower on the exposed sides of the

stage – where their IP65 rating had no problem

dealing with any weather issues.

Then came a series of festivals in which Bernd

Wittenberg and his team from Hamburg-based

Go Audio were responsible. Bernd was already

featuring SGM products extensively in Germany

and Switzerland during the 2013 summer season

at the Greenfield, Southside and Hurricane festivals. To that can be added Mera Luna, Highfield, Chiemsee in 2014. All featuring large

quantities of Q-7, Q-7 W and G-Spots.

"After the positive experience last year, SGM

was directly requested by many artists in 2014,

including SixPacks, X-5 and XC-5 strobes — all of

which left a clear impression. Now the Q-7 and

Q-7 W, which again can provide a significant increase

in light output, set yet another milestone. The Q-7

is a versatile asset — and can operate as a strobe,

as well as a blinder or continuous light,” says CEO

Bernd Wittenberg.

“In particular at outdoor festivals, with their

unpredictable weather conditions, the G-Spot has

fully convinced everyone. Where previously roofs

had to be built, or the much-disliked domes used

to protect the lamps, all you need today is just the

G-Spot,” he concluded.

Finally, at Wacken Open Air (WOA), the biggest

heavy metal festival in the world, lighting designer

Jerry Appelt, used, among other pieces, 60 Q-7s, 88

P-5s, and 48 SixPacks. Here again, SGM products

demonstrated their innovative abilities, as well as

their absolute outdoor and road capabilities.

“In just a few months G-Spot has captured major

market share in Germany, particularly at these

outdoor events,” Thorsten Sattler, CEO of SGM

Germany, confirms. “This fixture has proven to be

a real problem solver for festivals, sporting events

and corporate events.”

Effective September 1, SGM has appointed Filippo Frigeri as Senior Area Sales Manager of the United Kingdom and the United States.

The many activities in both UK and US has called upon a further strengthening of the sales force to maintain the high level of service and support for SGM clients.

Frigeri has eight years of industry experience working with business development and international sales with a profound insight into and understanding of exactly these markets assisting him in expanding the company’s product reach. His European roots combined with a complete US college education mix up for a cultural background that makes him the perfect link for the Danish company to reach out to its growing market.

Frigeri says, “It is exciting to join one of the fastest growing companies in the entertainment lighting industry. SGM is investing highly in product quality and the market users are recognizing the key innovation that lies behind the products. I truly admire how Peter and the rest of the team at SGM have radically changed the approach towards the customers

When PALM Expo took place in Mumbai earlier this year, Modern Stage represented SGM as local distributor welcoming over 1500 visitors to their stand.

As a longtime SGM distributor, Mr. Varinder Wadhwa of Modern Stage has seen for himself the powerful brand transformation that has occurred under the leadership of Peter Johansen and describes the new product line as “par excellence”. Displaying a broad selection consisting of the G-Spot, the P-5, the Q-7, the SixPack and the pixel products LB-100 and LT-100, the customer feedback was excellent. For their first-time demonstration in India, the IP65 G-Spot LED moving head stole attention with its unique features, while the Q-7 multifunctional wash, blind and strobe received nothing but great response. “The future is bright”, Mr Wadhwa concludes.

by providing real solutions, such as the G-range - world’s first maintenance free moving heads, and I look forward to help improving our sale and service structures within the UK and the USA to serve the many SGM users at best.”

CEO, Peter Johansen, comments, “Filippo brings new initiatives, a stable market knowledge and a high energy-level into SGM, and I am very pleased to have him on board.” He also reveals the plans to establish SGM US in the near future, starting up with key focus on building up a solid service department on the American market.

Something Spectacular - Covenant at theM’era Luna Festival

The M’era Luna Festival takes place annually in

Hildesheim, Germany at Flugplatz Hildesheim-

Drispenstedt — a former British Army airbase.

Featuring two stages, and historically

specialising in goth, metal and industrial music,

it also presents DJ sets on Friday and Saturday

evening.

Here we interview lighting designer, Stephan

Aue, and operator, Rico Münzer, who were

working with Swedish electronic dance band,

Covenant.

Stephan: The great thing about Covenant

is that they are always looking for something

extreme — and that provides a very good

opportunity to try something new out. During

their very drum and bass oriented shows, the

use of front light is almost not permitted and

the stage is dominated by fog. I have been

doing shows with them for almost 15 years

and admire their courage and willingness to try

out new things. I remember a show in Australia

where singer Eskil Simonsson yelled into the

microphone at the height of one of their hit

singles: "Aue, strobe them to death!!!" And what

can I say … I'm on it!

The idea for the festival show emerged at this

year's Prolight & Sound [in Frankfurt], as Rico

and I were in charge of the live stage for SGM.

From Covenant, the question came about doing

"something spectacular" at exactly the time I

was thinking about a matrix of 72 [SGM

LED] strobes — and I thought that would be

"spectacular" enough!

I have ‘sold’ the concept to the band in

soundbites, such as "a benchmark in brightness

for the next few years" and "some people are

going to hate it while others will definitely be

amazed.”

Rico: I have been working with this band

regularly since 2011, turning the ideas of Aue

into reality, and it was always somehow special,

new and exciting. The band was always full of

praise but added the comment: “Can it be a bit

brighter?” And that was now the plan that Aue

and I had at Prolight — specifically to play with

the SGM Q-7 strobes on stage. They had already

been tested and approved on the Sunrise

Avenue tour in February.

Stephan: Of course, as is so often the case,

there is not an infinite amount of power you can

draw on to light a festival; this is where the very

low current consumption of all SGM fixtures is a

huge benefit and in the end 40 SGM Q-7 W and

8 SGM P-5 arrived on the scene. For the Q-7 W

what can I say … but HELL! And as for the P-5

in the quieter moments, it created a beautiful

backlight and looked really great.

Rico: It also took a while to get the structure

really clear. We drove the strobe once

conventionally with the DMX values as well as

with video signals, using a Catalyst to map it.

These values were then simply merged with

a LAN node. Since then we also spent a bit of

time to check what content worked well on the

type of matrix tower we wanted to use with

Covenant. For the matrix we also played around

with the dimmer curves of the strobes.

I am now curious as to how the landscape will

change and the brightness increases even more

on the next Covenant tour. The cry of: “Rico …

maximum lights” will probably be reserved for

the final song, no matter how bright it is!

When rock legends Metallica handed down a creative brief to their design team to “start with a clean sheet of paper” when planning the concept for this summer’s Metallica By Request European festival tour, production designer/show director Dan Braun and lighting designer Rob Koenig needed no second bidding.

Since there were to be no legacy products, both men wanted to use a wide palette of LED fixtures with Braun looking to experiment with a non-discharge strobe for the first time; and so Koenig introduced him to SGM’s new XC-5 low profile RGB strobes and Q-7 multi-purpose RGBW wash / blinder. These fixtures brought drama and punch to the show while at the same time proving easy to truck and place within the set at high profile events such as Sonisphere and Glastonbury; but most importantly, they were extremely low on their energy requirement. Versatility was a further attribute required since the nature of a By Request tour meant that the set list was never the same two nights running.

Rob Koenig, who has been working with Metallica since 2008’s Death Magnetic World tour, confirmed that the new integrated video/lighting concept, designed to tour all European festivals, had been

assembled under the direction of the band. “Dan asked me to take a new approach to our festival lighting while maintaining the standard Metallica fans expect. I chose the SGM fixtures and when I showed them to Dan he liked their performance.”

When Metallica tours festivals they prefer to rely on local vendors rather than carry their own gear. Thus the LD specified 54 XC-5 colour strobes and 13 Q-7 as footlights, knowing that they would probably be the most popular and available.

This compact Q-7, deriving its power from 2,000 RGBW LEDs, was also successfully deployed in strobe mode on a couple of earlier shows — which is when Rob Koenig first became really impressed. “I wanted to experiment further, as I was intrigued by them,” he said. “We were able to cut down on power consumption, and the low profile of the fixture made it easy to place them in any corner and nook.

“The Q-7 offered the punch and output befitting a Metallica show — even the RGBW version — while we also used them as uplights at the mic positions and drum kit.”

These fixtures, he said, were sufficiently compact to fit neatly around the monitor wedges — without

footlight versatility

interfering with the audio. “They provided a nice [110°] fixed beam spread and I was particularly impressed with the flicker free operation.”

Other plus factors, he said, included the quality of the light source. “And for most shows we werealso able to cut a generator by using LED strobes, as opposed to discharge fixtures.

“Even though we did not have to transport or install the items, ease of use was important to my decisions because I believe that is an integral component of reliability. The same goes for the reduced energy requirements on the temporary sites that most festivals occupy; lower power requirements generally mean greater reliability.”

Production managed by Ken Mitchell the tourkicked off at Sonisphere in Helsinki (Hietaniemi Beach) on May 28, following a ten-day programming at Prelite in California — a studio set up to en-able designers to get to grips with emerging technologies.

With a new set list every night, the show became a continual work in progress. “This tour provided specific challenges since the fans picked the set list and the band determined what they would play overnight according to internet voting for each specific show,” explained the LD.

“The band arranged the songs so that although the show had a similar feel nightly, we never knew what, for example, the sixth song would be — it remained a mystery until we got handed a set list for the night 10 minutes prior to the start. This had to be taken into account as I built the show. And if that wasn’t enough there was live voting during the performance for what would be the final song!”

Metallica’s festival shows also rely heavily onvideo, so audience members 300 yards away can see the band, and be involved. “We wanted tobe video heavy while there was still ambient light, and we knew that laser could only be used near the end of the show when darkness had settled in.”

Since speed and flexibility thus became a vital adjunct to the show, Rob Koenig programmed his lights on a grandMA 2 explaining, “Cloning is my best friend on festival runs and I need [a desk] that can clone fixtures easily and fast.”

Summing up his experience with the SGM lights the LD concluded, “Throughout the festivals, I never had a problem with any of the SGM fixtures or experienced any flicker whatsoever. I am excited where these and the LED strobe market are going, and will be watching SGM closely to see how these lights evolve.”

SGM hi-res video walls score heavily for Vision Media Systems Since the beginning of the year Vision Media

Systems GmbH has been steadily building

demand for its large inventory of SGM LS-3.75

ultra hi-res (3.75mm pixel pitch) video panels,

capable of displaying crisp, high resolution

images from a suitable digital video source.

The flexibility of these panels has been proved

time and time again. Working for a leading brand

manufacturer Vision Media Systems GmbH put

on a display at a major product and business

awards ceremony in Davos, Switzerland. Since,

for space reasons, projection was out of the

question, the brand new 3.75 mm LED wall

modules were used in a special panoramic

format, with a 3.5 x 7.2m display in 896 x 1920

pixel resolution, conforming to the Coolux

Pandora’s Box controller.

Two months later in Barcelona, the SGM LS-3.75

was used again by the Neuss based production

company. This time it was for a design by Vienna-

based advertising agency, Contemporary

Communication by Christoph Svoboda. The

customer, a global player in consumer products,

wanted to demonstrate the relationship of

its global service centres in a meeting of their

international management.

Vision Media Systems built a system consisting

of a total of 260 SGM high-resolution LS3.75 LED

panels in five towers each of 16 and 36 panels

which were visible on all sides. It depicted a

world map, with several touchscreen controls to

initiate graphic visualisation of data/information

flow; it could be seen from everywhere in the hall

and was controlled by several Coolux Pandoras

Box processors. All the under-floor cabling was

specially customised beneath the false floor in

one of the rooms.

Finally, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of

Reuter Online Stores Inc., an SGM LED wall was

built by Vision Media Systems in the stadium

of Borussia Mönchengladbach so that their

specially created content appeared clearly

even in daylight conditions. Both this, and

the subsequent transmission of the World

Cup matches the same evening, received the

unqualified approval of both the customer and

guests.

Michael Herweg, CEO of SGM Germany, stated:

"The appearance of the 3.75mm panel is always

homogeneous even at very short viewing

distances, and as a result of the rear connection,

transitions or bezels between the modules are

virtually invisible — an absolute criterion for

high-quality events.”

Battersea Power Station was the iconic background for part of this year's Totally Thames Festival, organised by the Thames Festival Trust.

The event featured Carabosse, a French Fire Art company, who deliver picturesque installations for audiences and passers by throughout the world.

Illuminate Design have worked with the Thames Festival Trust for the past eight years helping to deliver a variety of events, predominantly the annual Mayor's Thames Festival in London.

This year, Jonathan Bartlett, Production Manager for the Trust, contracted Illuminate Design to provide a complete service for the Fire Garden by Carabosse at Battersea Power Station. The project brief included site management, PA, and lighting the famous chimneys.

To tackle the task, Robin Shephard-Blandy, Director for Illuminate Design, chose the new SGM G-Spot and P-5, after being introduced by SGM UK — with the result that five of each fixture were provided by White Light. Robin said: "The

G-spot was a perfect solution: because of the site layout, we needed to be alongside the river and required a powerful light source to throw over the long 80m distance.

"It was also important not to be limited in regards to colour to best light the chimneys to enhance the flames within the site and on the building. One of the main factors in choosing the G-Spot was the IP rating, meaning we were able to avoid housing fixtures in domes."

In addition, the production company used P-5s, to light Battersea's cranes — giving an ethereal backdrop against the River Thames and adding an extra dimension behind the fire show.

Following the event Adrian Evans, Festival Director said: "The lighting scheme Illuminate Design provided for the cranes and chimneys of Battersea Power Station was excellent. They responded both to a tight brief and a tighter budget with flair and excellence. Many of my VIP colleagues commented on the lighting. We will certainly want to work with Illuminate Design again."

As part of the Warsaw Mozart Festival, which

has been running for more than 20 years,

lighting designer Adam Tyszka this year took on

responsibility for an open air performance of the

W. A. Mozart opera “The Magic Flute”. This opera

took place in the courtyard of the 17th century

Museum of King Jan III Palace at Wilanow, thus

using the prestigious façade as a beautiful back-

drop for lighting and video creativity.

The concept and location of this event, being

open air and using the façade as a backdrop for

multimedia content, limited the use of truss. Any

type of roof above the stage would cause the

truss/construction pieces to obstruct the view of

video projections onto the façade. Therefore, the

lighting designer relied on the technical crew’s

ability to protect the equipment located close to

the stage.

Owner of main lighting supplier Setlight, Przemy-

slaw Wrembel, asked SGM’s Polish distributor LTT

to supply 12 G-Spot moving heads for testing.

“Considering show requirements, we concluded

that G-Spots having IP65 protection would ensure

a safer, easier and more elegant solution than any

possible attempts to protect regular IP20 moving

heads,” says Wrembel. And the decision was clear

after the testing: the G-Spots were undoubtedly

the right choice.

Further to that, several dozen P-5 wash lights,

which were provided by Transcolor, were put to use

- most of them used for façade illumination.

The G-Spots were placed close to the stage,

directly onto the grass, where there was no truss

or protection. “Traditional IP20 moving heads

would be exposed to dust, moisture from the

ground, as well as all kinds of ants, worms and

bugs, which can really cause a considerable mess.

Finally, the weather forecast also gave cause for

safety concerns. But we were confident that

G-Spots would withstand all of it,” states LTT’s

Pawel Jarzabek.

Concerns about the weather were justified, as

Warsaw was struck by a thunderstorm and heavy

rain on the day of the premiere, just ten minutes

before scheduled opening. The show was delayed

for about 45 minutes, until the storm subsided

sufficiently to allow the performers’ safety on

stage. “But the G-Spots worked throughout without

any problems. They were completely indifferent to

the rain,” comments Jarzabek.

The amazing lighting show was programmed on a

grandMA2 full-size console operated by Kajetan

Gostomski.

After a successful event, the only thing left to do

for LTT back in office was to clean the lenses from

dirt and air pollution residues and the fixtures were

ready for yet another job.

Manchester based lighting and rigging company, dbn Lighting, is no stranger to SGM products. Historically, their hire fleet has contained large quantities of the popular Palco 3 and Genio LED fixtures to service their wide roster.

Now, the Manchester-based rental company has brought its range up to date by acquiring 24 of SGM’s new P-5 low profile LED wash lights from SGM UK; the unit was designed to replace the Palco series, and bring the concept of the powerful IP65 rated wash light into the 21st century.

According to dbn director and lighting designer, Stephen Page, the purchase was not made without first carrying out a critical review of other comparable fixtures. “We reviewed and tested lots of alternatives but the P-5s were the best, and they will be suitable across the diverse range of projects we work on.”

The fixture’s enviable output-to-consumption ratio reveals an overall efficacy factor of 52 lumens per watt. This is derived from 44 x RGBW 10W LEDs (with 50,000 hours life expectancy), with a power consumption reduced to just 410W. Interchangeable 15°, 21° and 43° lens kits are also available.

One of their first high profile appearances was at a major outdoor arts event in Glasgow, tied in with the Commonwealth Games. “The P5s have an amazing colour range compared to other units we looked at,” Page continues.

“The range and evenness of the colour output was our prime consideration, as well a smooth dimming throughout the curve. The fixture is well designed and extremely smart and compact in appearance — which suits a lot of our work. The IP rating is another useful feature for our outdoor shows.”

During the 80s and 90s, dbn Lighting was synonymous with the so-called ‘Madchester’ band scene in the city. Now, in its fourth decade, dbn still maintains a strong musical connection; it has continued to support the city’s popular Parklife Festival and the Albert Hall and Warehouse Project club events — as well as undertaking high profile corporate and arts event based work.

“We have always received good support from SGM and I would expect this to be even better under the new set up, with SGM UK,” Stephen Page concludes.

An abundance of LED fixturesFinnish pop singer Jenni Vartiainen rose to fame

after winning the talent show Popstars in 2002 - as

part of a band - and later launched her solo career

in 2007. Now she is among the 50 best-selling

recording artists of all time in Finland, and by the

end of 2014 she will have performed more than

100 concerts this year alone.

Lighting designer, Pasi “Pasu” Koivistoinen, has

worked with the artiste for four years. Latest

project is her new album Terra, with the live tour

that started in November 2013 and reached a

staggering 33 summer festival gigs this year. In

early 2013, Pasu first approached local distributor

Noretron Communication Ltd and its CEO Timo

Kunnas to test some of SGM’s fixtures in order to

assess his possibilities regarding special strobe

effects. These tests influenced rental company

Uudenmaan Kiertuetekniikka Ltd to invest in six

XC-5 RGB LED colour strobes, ten P-5 wash light

for the tour (and further eight TLD-612A touring

LED drivers with Art-Net and 200 LB-100 LED Balls

for different stage setups), while also supplying

special integrated road cases and truss solutions

for easy transport and set-up.

From a lighting designer’s perspectiveBy operating the SGM units for Jenni Vartiainen and

stretching his creativity as designer, Pasu now has

nearly two years of experience with the unique LED

fixtures. This is his perspective:

“I am sort of a ‘semi’ old school

guy when it comes to lighting, and

the P-5 and the XC-5 were actually

the first LED fixtures that I really

wanted to have with me on tour.

“The XC-5 is a perfect touring buddy. It doesn't

consume much electricity and it obeys my

commands. It changes the colour when I tell it to.

No more messing around with scrollers!

“I like to create big looks on stage with lots of

colours; the P-5 is perfect for that job. They are

pretty much the backbone of the show, providing

the colour and pulsation The even spread and

brightness that my six floor units, washing the

drapes, are able to give is somewhat jaw dropping,

while the four front/side P-5s, with narrow lenses,

are perfect to colour-wash the band and to give

dramatic looks that I like.

“The brightness of the white LEDs, while not having

them in my colour mixes, allows me to use the P-5s

almost as a two different fixtures; for example

having a smooth dark blue chase and on top of that

a sharp beat with white LEDs. At the same time I

do not have to worry about the rain at open air

concerts as they are IP65 rated.

“At every club, festival or concert hall that we visit,

I find my fellow lighting designers - and even sound

guys - showing an interest in this product.”

SGM’s distributor, Technical Supply Japan Co.,

Ltd., recently conducted two open house days

in Tokyo and one day in Osaka, where the SGM

portfolio was on display. The purpose of these

events was to create awareness about Art-Net

and LIGHTCONVERSE through seminars while

showcasing the new SGM LED range for the

300 lighting specialists invited, including lighting

technicians, lighting designers, manufacturers

of lighting equipment and distributors.

The reason for TSJ wishing to arrange such

activities is closely related to the company’s

dedication to service. Established in 1986, TSJ

was one of the first industry companies in Japan

to create a service department with key focus

on providing the best technical assistance.

Introducing the SGM range as part of TSJ’s

product mix has, according to CEO Takeshi

Hayakawa, added high quality and uniqueness to

their product categories. “The high demand for

LED fixtures is a natural part of the development.

People request powerful and bright fixtures,

pixel mapping lighting equipment and high IP

rating. With the SGM products, we can easily

meet these demands.”

At the open house events, visitors could see

fixtures such as the G-Spot moving head, the P-5

wash light and the multifunction Q-7 wash blind

and strobe. “Everyone saw the possibilities in

the G-Spot offering outdoor application, and in

the P-5 with its versatility highlighted by a quick

change of beam angles. And the brightness is

incredible right through the range; the G-Spot,

the P-5, the Q-7…” states Hayakawa.

Interest in the P-5 RGBW is high in Japan, and

the fixture has been performing splendidly for

example at the Tokyo Motor Show - where

Lexus for the first time ever used colours in their

lighting design - as well as at several outdoor

events requesting specifically this wash light.

TSJ has been searching for the right lighting

partner for quite some time to meet their

standards for a high output, colour consistency

and IP65 rating. Takeshi Hayakawa is pleased

with the cooperation between SGM and TSJ.

“SGM is one of the best lighting manufacturers

on the market nowadays, making nice fixtures

to match the customers’ requests. Only few

can make what customers actually want,” he

concludes.

SGM NEWS No. 7 2014

Recently, two TV rental specialists — one operating in London and one in Glasgow — pooled their respective SGM inventories to great effect recently during the Scottish Independence Referendum.

With most of the broadcast activity centred on Glasgow, Tony Kennedy’s Teknique Systems, having purchased 12 SGM P-5 wash lights from SGM UK, joined forces with Richard Martin Lighting (RML) to provide lighting infrastructure in two very different venues.

The live televised debate between Alistair Darling (leading the ‘No’ campaign) and Alex Salmond (Scotland’s First Minister, heading the drive for Independence) — held at the historic Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum — was followed by the action through the night as the votes were counted. This took place in ‘The Street’, the central atrium area of the ultra-modern £72m BBC Pacific Quay, which only opened seven years ago.

“We handle all the lighting hires and technical support for RML in Scotland,” confirmed Tony Kennedy. “It means that production companies and LDs get the same level of service on a local basis.”

He was first introduced to the P-5s at last year’s PLASA Show in London. “I liked the fixture and thought it was the right product to introduce to our hire stock,” he said. “It also seemed a good product to cross hire with RML when required,

as we wanted a high output fixture for various jobs.”

Teknique Systems first demoed RML’s inventory at the beginning of the year on the Celtic Connections Festival at new Glasgow venue, The Hydro, “and this convinced us that this was serious bit of kit,” he said.

“As a high output fixture with long throw and low power consumption, I could see how we could use them (with the 23° lens option) at both these referendum events.”

Flown from lighting bars, they lit up the Pacific Quay atrium and fabric of the building during the network broadcast on referendum night itself as millions tuned in to watch the votes being returned and counted (with presenters Jeremy Vine and Hugh Edwards). “We also incorporated four SGM Q-7 [RGBW flood] fixtures at low level for a colour wash, as these units have a great wide angle lens,” he continued.

In addition, 12 P-5s (from RML) were used to illuminate the Scottish Parliament Building in Edinburgh as the backdrop for all the Media Village reports leading up to the final result.

Summing up, Tony Kennedy says: “The P-5 is a great product. It has built-in Wi-Fi, comes with various lens options and delivers high output from low power consumption. In addition, it has very good build quality and is IP65-rated — so it’s usable both inside or outside … which is a real bonus for us.”

Roskilde Festival 2014 marked their LED strategy

adding a vast number of SGM fixtures to their

stages this summer. The scene was set with

prominent lighting designers such as Michael

Rahr, Christian Olsson and Kasper Lange. Each

responsible for their uniquely designed stages.

On Arena stage, Christian Olsson deployed 80

P-5 wash lights inside the tent (another 14 units

were used on the outside). “With the P-5 fixtures,

we wanted to create a dynamic atmosphere

adding effects during the concerts,” Olsson

informs.

46

Once the setup was in place, he could conclude

that the fixtures proved so powerful in output

that half the amount would have been sufficient.

The Arena tent accommodates 17,000 people,

which speaks volumes about its size. The fact

that only 14 P-5 wash lights were enough to light

up the canvas impressed the lighting designer,

who gained an ideal indirect light setting.

Once again, this year Michael Rahr designed

quite the show extraordinaire at Apollo stage.

This included no fewer than 96 Q-7 multifunction

wash, blind and strobe fixtures, 24 P-5 wash

lights, 96 SixPack blinders and 36 G-Spot moving

heads, providing one powerful LED lighting

show.

Supplier to Apollo was Vigsø Light and Show

Design (Q-7, P-5 and SixPack) and VIP Lyd Lys

Laserudlejning (G-Spot). Technical manager

of VIP, Allan Mortensen, believes the market

has been anticipating an IP65 moving head

for several reasons: “It’s unique, it cuts the

power consumption in half compared to our

previous lamps, and we save money and time

by choosing the G-Spot. Both our clients, the

insurance companies and we are fed up with

water damaged lighting fixtures, but now we

don’t have to worry about that any longer,” he

states. VIP further delivered 24 Q-7 for Orange

stage.

Kasper Lange, who was LD for this year’s

spectacular Eurovision Song Content,

implemented 25 G-Spot moving heads and 25

X-5 strobes into his design for Orange stage.

These were also delivered by Vigsø Light and

Show Design. Company owner, Christian Vigsø,

gave no second thoughts about investing in his

rental fleet of SGM products. “It was an easy

decision as the demand for the products is high

and continues to increase. I feel confident that

their lamps will become industry standards over

the next few years and it’s important for me to

be a first mover on the wave of success created

by SGM”, he states.

Being a lighting designer himself, he has been

working with many of the SGM products on

Roskilde Festival, which to him stretches the

limits of lighting creativity. “Suddenly, you don’t

have to consider the environments when making

up new designs and ways to illuminate objects.

These fixtures revoke the need for canopies,

without having to compromise the light output

or performance. And what a shame it would

have been to hide the fixtures. SGM nailed it

with this design,” Vigsø explains.

Roskilde Festival keeps pushing the boundaries

for lighting creativity with their team of highly

skilled lighting designers. Again this year, they

demonstrated innovative thinking using the SGM

fixtures as the paintbrush for their canvasses.

“At every club, festival or concert hall that we

visit, I find my fellow lighting designers - and

even sound guys - showing an interest in this

product.”

Humidity elimination

SGM has introduced a patent-pending solution to ensure the complete IP65 of the G-Spot; a Gore-tex pressure equalization membrane fitted to equalize the air pressure. Through this Gore-tex membrane air is allowed to pass through the membrane, while humidity cannot. The air humidity will be maintained at a constant level by the electrolysis process of hydrogen extraction which eliminates humidity – thereby creating the ideal environment for electronic circuits.

LT·100/2003D Graphic Tube

The LT-100/200 comprises a series of one/two-metre long pixel sticks, loaded with RGB LEDs at 35mm pixel pitch — all DMX drivable via any proprietary media server, or pixel mapping DMX consol.

This 3D graphic tube can be suspended from the ceiling providing a staggering overhead 3D vertical and horizontal zip effect. However, it is not limited to a suspension mode, as it can also be floor mounted, integrated into sceneries, etc.

The theory of pixel mapping is that two dimensional objects are transformed into three dimensions with the help of advanced programming techniques; thus each LT-100/200 LED pixel can be addressed individually enabling the LJ to create genu-ine 3D lighting effects, such as 3D waves or 3D bars which can be easily manipu-lated in terms of speed, colour, brightness, direction, and much more.

TOURING LED DRIVER

TOURING LED DRIVER - ART-NET

The TLD-612 Touring LED driver has specifically been designed for powering and driving the LB-100 LED balls and the LT-100/LT-200 graphic tubes.

The driver’s six outputs can control up to 6 x 8 pcs. LB-100 strings or 6 pcs. of LT-100 or 6 pcs. of LT-200. Maximum total power consumption is 360W and each LED pixel uses 3 DMX channels.

The TLD-612 is IP65 rated for both indoor and outdoor application, and uses 2 DMX universes in 5pin XLR.

The TLD-612A offers all the same features and driving capabilities as the regular TLD-612, with the variation of offering an Ethernet EJ45 Artnet interface instead of regular 5-pin XLR DMX interface.

The output of the TLD-612A is completely individually configurable by software, which makes it possible to send any channel range in any universe to each output. The Art-Net interface is especially designed for high-speed / high-flow DMX, and thereby making it a perfect match for pixel mapping.

This makes the TLD-612A suitable for applications that require numerous DMX universes, at a cost-efficient level. This driver ensures quick and easy installation for touring.

WHITE LIGHT ADD G-SPOTS TO GROWING SGM INVENTORY

London-based White Light has added to its inventory of SGM’s new generation of task specific LED products by making its first investment in the award-winning G-Spot platform.

The fixture, which picked up a PLASA Innovation Award soon after its launch, is the only IP65-rated LED spot on the market, and boasts enviable functionality and luminous output from an 850W high power RGBY LED light source.

White Light Hire & Technical Director, Dave Isherwood, whose company last year became the first UK customer for the P-5 washlight, says: “We’ve been considering G-Spot for some time, and have been talking regularly to Ian Kirby at SGM UK.

“Because G-Spots function outdoors, and are incredibly bright and crisp, we could see the potential both for our own work and for cross-hire/sub-rentals. We decided to make the investment and promptly picked up three jobs in quick succession [which required G-Spot]. So the timing worked perfectly.”

Longer term, he sees great potential for use at festivals where it will be able to perform in all

weather conditions. Wherever they make it to, he knows the sealed units will require minimum prep and maintenance time, an important factor for the busy rental company. “It will be quick to clean and we won’t constantly be changing lamps or filters, or wiping domes,” he adds.

Immediate high profile locations which have seen G-Spot action in double quick time are Battersea Power Station, where another rental company used White Light’s G-Spots to fire over 80 metres at the Totally Thames Festival, while the best of all was for one of White Light’s own productions — an event for a legal consortium at Westminster Abbey and Horse Guards Parade Ground in central London; here the buildings behind — such as the Old Admiralty Building and Household Cavalry Museum — were dramatically washed with G-Spot’s inventive library of different gobo projections.

Dave Isherwood says that White Light havenever looked back since making their first investment in the P-5s 15 months ago, followed by X-5 white LED strobes. “SGM gives us something different in every case,” he says. “With P-5 it’s the output within a reduced form factor, and the versatility it gives us from outdoor jobs to conferences. The range will cover one end of the spectrum to the other and the same goes for G-Spot, which in addition to its other benefits has wireless control, which will be particularly useful.”

For these reasons, he predicts G-Spot will be in especially high demand for outdoor work in the coming winter season.

Spot on Adel Tawil’sDVD production 26 G-Spot moving heads light up German castle as part of the setting.

Prince-Bishop’s Castle in Münster served as a

background setting for a DVD recording of German

singer-songwriter/producer, Adel Tawil. 10,000

fans were thrilled when Adel Tawil came to the

transparent circular platform in front of the castle,

which background setting presented a scenery of

fascinating interplay of light and colour. The goal

was to alienate the baroque residential palace by

means of light with referrals to tagging which is

normally known from the graffiti scene.

Show designer, JoJo Tillmann (LesUrbanProgres-

sives) states: “I wanted to do without dome

protection from the rain and at the same time

the lights should be enormously powerful on the

colour reproduction of projections. Therefore, the

choice automatically came to the SGM G-Spot, as it

to my knowledge is the only professional moving

head with IP65 rating with such a high level of light

intensity. It all added up to 26 G-Spots - evenly

distributed in front of the façade of the castle.”

“The RGB engine of the G-Spot was able to

create a result that was an entirely new lighting

experience for me. Due to the increase in output

in the color reproduction compared to discharge

lamps, there was no drop in brightness in deep

red or ultra-blue.”

“In my work as a show designer and at the

same time as a light cameraman (DOP) for DVD

production, a filmable, colored background is

desperately needed," JoJo continues. "The G-Spot

is unique in its performance class and opens up to

whole new possibilities!"

The SGM G-Spot is a 850 watt LED profile spot

with very natural colours and intense white

reproduction.

When planning the refurbishment of the popular Slovakian club Ponorka Music Pub, it was essential that the owners found a unique and unusual effect to help restore the venue’s reputation. SGM’s distributor City Light Slovakia presented a quality solution encompassing both light and sound, from concept to installation, that met these prerequisites.

With a decorative, high luminosity LD-5 ceiling, City Light Slovakia achieved a perfect matrix effect, producing a colourful centrepiece surface for the club and amazing dynamics for its dancefloor. Some 1260 of these units, each containing four RGB LEDs and measuring 80mm in outer diameter, were mounted in the wooden cladding panels over the dancefloor and in front of the bar in a uniform formation with a distance of 200mm between each dome.

“We selected the LD-5 from SGM because of its accurate RGB colour mixing and potential for creative colour changing. In addition, this energy saving fixture, with a long lifetime, eliminates the need to invest in expensive lamps,” explains City

Light Slovakia’s sales manager, Ms. Ľűuboslava

Činčárová.

The high number of LD-5 are controlled by French manufacturer Nicolaudie’s DMX lighting control software Sunlite First Class+ matched up with ArtNet and DMX distribution from Dutch ELC Lighting; for both brands City Light Slovakia is the exclusive Slovakian distributor.

City Light Slovakia was established in 1993 with a key focus on high quality products and service, making the company eligible to meet the criteria of the highest European quality standards, attested by a variety of projects until date. Since 1997, the company has been an SGM partner and is very pleased with the recent line of lighting effects such as LT-100/200, LB-100 and the LD-5, which has brought a unique feel to their lighting business. “We believe that we will continue in this segment and we will carry out many installations with the SGM range, which we consider as high

quality products,” Ms. űČinč űárová informs.

With a capacity of 600 people, the club now attracts an increased number of visitors, who are impressed by the interior design; this is further underlined by the positive reaction on social

networks. But club owner Mr. Rusinkoviűč appears to be the most satisfied of all, since his venue is once again the top club in Presov.

Viva! magazine recently celebrated its 15th anniversary at the picturesque Mogoșoaia Palace in Bucharest. As the most anticipated glossy event of the year in Romania, the party was attended by 1,200 local show business celebrities, the ladies marking the glamorous red-carpet garden party by wearing long gowns and gentlemen showing up in tuxedos.

SGM’s local partner, production company FIVE’S, supplied the lighting equipment for this high-class venue and incorporated the versatile SGM range into their design. The company witnessed SGM’s product presentation at Prolight+Sound earlier this year, and instantly knew that this was the LED range that they were seeking.

Thus, the new G-Spot moving head made its Romanian debut, with six units lighting up the red carpet corridor together with six SixPack blinders.

Marketing Developer, Titus Percea, explains: “We were happy to introduce these intelligent lights at Viva! The best fixtures – the crème de la crème of technology – have now been put to use to support this event.”

With a light shower of rain over Bucharest during the second part of the event, Percea appreciated the reliability of the G-Spot’s unique IP65 rating underlining that “for the first time ever, this type of equipment can be used outdoors without any problems. And the output is excellent!”

A further four P-5 RGB wash lights were deployed as architectural lighting in the garden and four Q-7 RGBW colour accentuated the Mini Cooper stand at the party. FIVE’S had 25 people involved at different levels for the technical element of the event, which turned out to be the great success that everyone anticipated.

Taking its inspiration from the 2013 Pukkelpop Festival in Belgium, which saw the first deployment of Blueprint Events’ SGM LT-200 3D mappable LED pixel tubes, Chris Morgan’s company has now delivered what he believes to be the largest SGM tube matrix ever seen in the UK — at the high profile Creamfields 2014 in the north of England, over August Bank Holiday weekend. Working for The Events Company UK, who handled the rigging and design, Blueprint decorated Size Records’ Size Matters 10-pole big top with 400 x LT-200 SGM tubes and 130 x ILD controllers — spread over three separate grids.

The pixel-mappable 2m-long graphic tubes, loaded with RGB LEDs at 35mm pixel pitch, was specifically designed for Saturday night headliner, the Greek-Swedish DJ/producer, Steve Angello (of Swedish House Mafia fame) and his ‘Size Records’ family. Chris Morgan reports; “The Events Company UK were looking for something a little different to make Steve Angello’s set really stand out and designed these moving grids, populating them with 3D mapped tubes.”

Events Company UK selected Madrix as the optimum control platform for the tubes due to the flexibility in creating content and the unique ability to map the tubes in 3D.

Blueprint’s Toby Shipway programmed and operated the tubes, requiring 140 DMX universes to create effects that were mapped individually on the three grids, before combining the maps to fill the room in a single continuous grid.

These grids themselves were raised up to the roof so that the LT-200s went unnoticed during the preceding acts, before being dramatically lowered for the main set.

Via the Kinesys motion control, the three grids could then be raised and lowered over the heads of the audience independently during the show to the amazement of all.

The entire show was conceived and implemented in around two weeks, with the Kinesys control and rigging designed and programmed by The Events Company UK’s Mike Smith. The installation itself was carried out through the night so that the LT-200 pixel tubes were only in situ for the Saturday night and gone by the next day.

Looking back at the event, Chris Morgan said, “Although it was a tight deadline the planning by The Events Company UK made implementation a breeze. Having such a large stock of SGM products is essential in order to put these designs into practice, and allow for any last minute developments.”

Dubai-based technical service specialists, the eclipse Group, operate a programme of continuous investment to keep their inventory of lighting, sound and video solutions at the cutting edge.

Recently, they made their first investment in SGM’s new LED technology with the purchase of 40 P-5 low profile, high output LED wash lights from territorial distributors TechnoPro, having earlier fielded 120 of the fixtures at the inauguration of a major lighting festival in Dubai.

This was all the proof that eclipse founder and CEO, Mark Brown needed, although he and his technical team also undertook a critical evaluation against another industry standard architectural colour changer.

“The result was like chalk and cheese,” he said. “The P-5 just blew away the competition. In particular the quality of the red [diode] was hugely impressive.”

With its 44 x RGBW 10W LEDs creating a high luminous output, the P-5 boasts an efficacy of 51,2 lm/W combined with a flicker free operation

and IP65 rating, making it suitable for any application, while interchangeable 15, 21 and 43° lens kits add further to its versatility. Apart from the large variety of saturated colours that can be created due to the RGBW, the high-performance LEDs produce a very bright and pure white, which provides a full palette of pastel colours.

“When we saw the P-5s working for the first time we immediately loved them and wanted to invest in our own,” Mark Brown confirms. “We have principally bought these for colour washing buildings and what we were really looking for was power and high output.”

Since then, eclipse has used the lights regularly, most recently to illuminate The Football Five’s World Championships (F5WC) indoor football championship at Dubai World Trade Centre - a global initiative to select talented amateur football players through regional 5-a-side qualifying rounds to then compete in the Dubai 2015 finals.

“This was both our first purchase from SGM and from TechnoPro and we have not only been impressed with the products themselves but also

the support we have received.”

The location for the recording of “Water Came Down” took place in The Underwater Studios in Basildon, Essex, UK, where Oli Couch played the role as electrician and lighting operator besides supplying lighting equipment from his own limited company Lite Project. Oli deployed his SGM X-5 white LED strobes for a stunning visual result. “There was a concern about using strobe lighting against the Perspex window into the tank as they have been known to melt with conventional high power strobes. This challenge was easily overcome with the X-5 LED strobes because the heat sink does a fantastic job of dissipating the minimal heat out the back of the unit. The deployment of the X-5 strobes provides a powerful visual effect adding to the ‘glitchy’ style of the video.

They are a dream to work with. Physically, I really like the ease of rigging with the omega clamps, and of course not having to change the lamp! Also having control of the three segments is a really useful feature that I frequently use.

Originally, I was looking at various fixtures until I saw the X-5 units for the first time. It immediately made far more sense to invest in future-proof LED technology from a modern innovative brand. Next up, I am planning to add the SixPack to my inventory.”

Although still only in the initial phase for Fredericia Theatre’s production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid – The Musical, production designers Anders D. Jensen and Jens Frausing already had their eyes on SGM’s LB-100 LED Balls. Lighting designer Christian Vigsø had introduced them to the IP65-rated RGB pixel strings at one of his designs for the Kolding Light Festival — set in a much different outdoor environment. The production team was keen to use them in their attempt to reinvigorate theatre scenography, and once implemented, the result has lived up to all their expectations. 648 LB-100 - each measuring 0.85m and contain- ing seven RGB semi-transparent LED balls – are driven by 18 SGM TLD-612A, run by a Hippotizer Rackoon and suspended from the roof as a curtain

wall in different lengths with a maximum of 6 meters. Decorated with small pieces of cloth, the strings resemble seaweed for the show’s Under the Sea scenes. “We chose the LED Balls for this act of the show to bring life into the seaweed elements. And as the act evolves, we are able to animate them and broaden the colour spectrum from green shades to multiple colours, making them transfer into a show light. Normal LED strips would not be able to create the same effect for us,” Frausing explains.

Another 216 LB-100 have creatively been built into a volcano setting for the villainous character Ursula, where they pulse underneath a linen simulating a flow of lava. “It was awesome to have a product that we were able to animate to provide this pulsating effect while at the same

time changing colours,” says Frausing.

As these balls, with a 360° viewing angle, form part of the decorative effect lighting, the task was in the hands of the production designers rather than the lighting designers. Anders D. Jensen explains: “The stage setup is constructed around massive LED screens, and the use of LED Balls makes it possible for us to blur the transition from graphical to physical elements through animation, bringing life and depth into this underwater setting.” The two production designers are always looking to be inspired by new elements that can be adapted into their settings to revitalise the art form of theatre and continue to astonish the spectators. Fortunately, Vigsø Light & Show

Design supplied exactly that element with the SGM LB-100.

The production by Fredericia Theatre has been extremely well received. It opened by playing one month at The Royal Opera House in Copenhagen and then to have its revival premiere at Fredericia Theatre, where its running time has now been prolonged well into the fall. Already it has been declared the most-watched theatrical performance in Denmark in 2014, exceeding 90,000 sold tickets.

“We have received much positive response for our visual efforts; a lot of credit is also due to this product [the LB-100] that has enabled us to create an unprecedented space and an environment for this show production,” Frausing concludes.

See You!

G-Spot meets Azerbaijan’s weather ‘mentality’ Recently, Mamedia group s.r.o. teamed up with

SGM to deliver a full outdoor event concert

package for the Nakhchivan city municipality

in Azerbaijan; this included all technical project

design and event management.

“Not having had any outdoor equipment before,

we wanted to offer them a flexible solution in

sound and light from top manufacturers, so I

chose SGM for the lighting and K-array for the PA

system,” CEO Boris Abdul explains.

The eight G-Spots used for this open-air show

were the first shipment of these unique fixtures

received by Mamedia, who since 2004 have

deployed SGM’s 1200 spots to high satisfaction.

Even though the fixtures are still in good condition,

Mr. Abdul wanted to expand his stock with the new

LED moving head. “In my opinion, the G-Spot is the

most advanced and innovative moving head in the

world market today. The weather in Baku [capital

of Azerbaijan] is extreme; we have 250 windy

days per year and high humidity – environments

that normally kill any electronic equipment used

outdoors. My 1200 SGM spots have survived

these conditions and are still functioning as rental

fixtures. Based on this trial experience, I’m offering

SGM products to any client in Baku as equipment

with ‘local mentality’,” he smiles.

Having selected the G-Spot for clear-cut reasons

such as IP65 rating, high output of 17,000 lumens

and a design, which he describes as “awesome”,

Mr. Abdul is highly focused on the

unit as a LED lamp. “It’s the

21th century and engineers

should forget all about mercury

lamps and keep this planet

healthy and safe. Recycling

of mercury and indium

contained in the HMI and

MSR lamps is a long

and expensive process.”

he states.
