SRC - NSW UN Youth Voice Competition
Our students did a great job at the NSW UN Youth voice competition at PLC. Speeches were great. They had to select a topic from a list and come up with a solution. They found the impromptu talk a bit tricky, but did a great job. Congratulations to them and the well done on the confidence it took to get up there and participate. The students will find out if they will progress to the next round soon.
SRC Coordinator– Ms C Fawaz
This is what our students had to say:
On Thursday, 17 October, Ameena Solh, Noor Joshi, Ji ho So, Alexis Nguyen and Emily Tran travelled to Presbyterian Ladies College after school to compete in the UN Youth Public Speaking Competition.
There were two parts to the debate, the first one was the pitch where we presented a prepared speech on a topic of our choice based on the list of options provided to us. The second part was question time (impromptu) this was where the judges would ask all the participants 2 questions privately. We had one minute to think of an answer and 2 minutes to answer.
The experience and competing with other students was great and I'm sure we all had a good time and hope we progress to the next round.

China Cultural Tour 2019
On the 4th of October, 14 girls met at Sydney’s International
Airport, along with Ms Lee and Ms Dalamagas ready to go on a 12
day trip to China. The students
from Years 7, 8 and 9 went to
one of the biggest countries in
the world to experience the
vibrant culture of China in
Beijing, the hustle and bustle of Xian, the calm and beautiful sights of
Chengdu, and the mountainous
climate of Chongqing. Over the
12 days, the students got to
experience the best of what
China has to offer from the
Great Wall, the Terracotta
Warriors, the Great Pandas,
giant rock carvings, and of
course, the food. Many great friendships were formed and even
more amazing memories were made.
The first 2 days of the trip were spent in the beautiful and mountainous climate of Chongqing. Here,
everyone got to experience the city’s special foods,
attractions and the way their public holiday was celebrated.
The first stop was a street market which sold handcrafted
souvenirs and freshly made food displaying the uniqueness of
each item. We were then taken to the Dazu rock carvings
which were astounding sculptures painted and carved into
the face of the rock, representing important life lessons.
After travelling on our first bullet train of the trip, we arrived
at Chengdu. We witnessed the amazing work by the Chengdu
Research Base of
Panda Breeding.
During the remaining of our stay at Chengdu, we took a boat
to see the Giant Buddha and ended the day with watching the
Sichuan Opera, viewing the talent of the people and their
diverse culture within the city, all expressed into a
breathtaking show of tricks, dancing and great opera voices.
The third city everyone visited was Xi’an, home to a great variety of tradition and culture. Our group first
visited the Wild Goose Pagoda where we were taught to write the character ‘ 福 ’ meaning happiness in
Chinese and then we were taken to the Ancient City Wall which is well known for being the most
well-preserved wall still standing in China today. Our last stop in the city was the Terracotta Warriors
where our group witnessed thousands of life-sized sculptures of clay warriors, originally built to protect
Emperor Qin in the afterlife. Students and teachers were also
very lucky to meet the farmer who discovered the Terracotta
Warriors and even took photos with him.
On the first day of Beijing, after a 4 and a half hour bullet train
ride in first class, we checked into the fancy Grand Metro Park
Hotel. The following
day, our group went on
a tour through the local
Hutong village where
we did water
calligraphy on the ground with a calligraphy master, learnt how to
make a traditional happiness symbol with red paper and ate a
traditional Chinese banquet prepared by a local family in their
own home. After, our group visited the historical Tiananmen
Square and then explored the endless doors of the famous
Forbidden City. The day
ended with us watching the breathtaking Kungfu Legend show
where we watched the talented acrobats and actors tell the
legend of Kung Fu. The next day must've been the highlight of
our Beijing visit. We first visited the Olympic Water Cube and
Bird’s Nest, then ventured out to the Jade factory. We arrived at
the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall of China and had the
chance to climb as much as possible in a time restraint of 1
hour. Despite the wet conditions nearly all managed to
successfully climb to the top and back down of the Mutianyu
section, as well as capture spectacular photos of the wall.
Overall the trip was an amazing and unforgettable experience for everyone. Not only did this trip teach us
more about the culture of China but it gave us the opportunity to create new friendships and experience
new activities in another country. Furthermore, we would like to thank Ms Lee, Ms Dalamgas, Ms Lyris
and Mr Liu for making this trip possible. The time and effort put into the 2019 China trip, made it the most
memorable and enthralling journey for all of us.
