Tae Kwon Do Competition

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art that is offered as a sport on Tuesday for all students to select. It is run by Suhhee Sirohi, who is an accomplished athlete and was a Taekwondo Olympic Judge in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

On Sunday, the 18 March, she offered an opportunity to 6 young girls who have been taking her classes regularly at school. The girls spanned from yellow belt to red belt and were offered the opportunity to compete at the 8th KTAA President’s Cup competition.

The tournament was held at Rockdale Sports Centre, on a 40 degree day. Sirohi, along with others who had coached Olympic Teams and the Australian National Team, was a judge. The 6 girls, Emily Johnston, Kaylah Apps and Thanvi Gunti of Year 12, Megan Lam and Jennifer Zhaojun of Year 11 and Marcella Capraro of Year 9 competed in the ‘Poomsae’ section of the cup, meaning ‘Patterns’. Each belt has a pattern of certain skills designed for that level of skill, there are 8+ Poomsae patterns.

The 6 girls showed their precision of skill with their corresponding pattern, earning four of them a Gold medal. These four girls include; Emily Johnston, Kaylah Apps, Jennifer Zhao and Marcella Capraro. Thanvi Gunti earned a Silver medal and Megan Lam a Bronze. Later, they joined their efforts as a team and competed as groups, focusing on synchronisation and attention to detail. Two groups, the duo, Emily and Marcella and the trio of Kaylah, Thanvi and Megan won Gold.

All together, 9 Gold Medals, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze were won on the day for the 6 girls, making their campaign extremely successful.

Congratulations to all the competitors and a big thank you to Suhhee for training them, spotting their talent and entering them in this prestigious competition.
