SGGA PrESidEnt’S MESSAGE

2020 – Where do we go from here?

Much work has, and is, being done by your board to help you be the best you can be. One important element that we have identified is Education.

it is no secret that education has the power to change. Well it has the power to change your greenhouse as well.

Educating ourselves in an ever-changing environment gives us the tools to keep up. new trends, vegetables, new demographics, the younger gardeners’ more aware-ness of our environment, house plants. What part can, and will, plants play in a new cleaner world?

Education ensures we have the understanding to problem solve. Fertility issues, increased vulner-ability to disease, rapid develop-ment of new varieties, develop-ment in technology.

With artificial intelligence on our doorstep it is important that human potential and contribution is maximized. Our human touch in smaller greenhouses gives us that advantage.

Education is the tool for build-ing our businesses. One that can problem solve. A business that can interpret, analyze. to think critically and be creative.

Education enlightens new thoughts, new ideas, and expands our potential. Education is where the mind goes to grow our busi-nesses, create new concepts.

You have heard Bigger, Stron-ger, Faster… Well… Education makes us Smarter, Healthier, richer.

Who is in for the ride of your Life? 2020 is upon us. Make sure you take part in these up and com-ing workshops:

• Biosecurity Jan 8 Saskatoon

• Biosecurity Jan 14 Saskatoon

• Pesticide Applicator Course Jan 27,28 Saskatoon

• Pesticide Applicator Course Jan 30,31 Regina

despite the terrible weather, pro-ducers weathered the snow storm to attend the BioSecurity Work-shop held in Saskatoon on Janu-ary 8th.

doug Waterer shared valuable information on BioSecurity prac-tices for the greenhouse industry and provoked producers to iden-tify areas on their operation to im-prove BioSecurity practices.

Producers in attendance received 4 Pesticide Applicator Credits for attending and taking the training. if you missed the session due to the weather or were unable to at-tend in Saskatoon, you still have a chance to take in the training in regina on tuesday, January 14th (details on the following page).

Biosecurity Workshops for Saskatchewan Greenhouses

SaSkatoon: January 8, 2020 • 1 pm – 5 pm Western Development Museum

Regina: January 14, 2020 • 1 pm – 5 pm Days Inn, Regina Airport at Harbor Landing

Plant pests are responsible for significant losses in yields and quality in Saskatchewan greenhouse crops. The goal of the Saskatchewan Greenhouse Biosecurity Program is to help growers reduce pests by keeping greenhouse pests from becoming established in your greenhouses. Controlling pest problems before they become established is an effective and cost efficient means of dealing with many pests problems – and it also makes good economic sense plus is environmentally sustainable.

Biosecurity helps protect your farm, your customers and your industry. Biosecurity is your responsibility.

The Workshop will introduce growers to the recently released Farm Biosecurity Guide for Saskatchewan Greenhouses developed by the Saskatchewan Greenhouse Growers Association in collaboration with Dr. Doug Waterer (formerly of the Plant Sciences UofS), with funding provided by Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture.

The workshop will … a) Introduce growers to the Guide b) Outline the basic concept Biosecurity and the objectives of Biosecurity Programs c) Determine the major Biosecurity threats faced by your farm d) Outline the steps required to keep these problems off your farm e) Outline the steps to implement the required pest control measures f ) Outline the steps in monitoring the efficacy of the program g) Outline how this process can be repeated over time, improved and changed as new pest threats arise

All of the steps are covered in a checklist type workbook which is included in the Guide. Copies of the Guide will be provided.

management with Dr. Mohyuddin Mirza

SaSkatoon: February 8, 2020 • 10 am - 3 pm Room 2C25, Agriculture Building

51 Campus Drive, University of Saskatchewan

• Did you know that the use of water is the single most important input for greenhouse crops?

• Did you know that water quality could make and break the greenhouse business?

• Would you believe that pH and EC of water influences the uptake of nutrients and thus affects the health of your plants?

• And did you know that most of us are afraid of math calculations and there is a Fertilizer Fear Factor?

Here is what you should do: • Register early • Bring your pH and EC meters along with pH 4 and 7 buffers, if you have them. • Bring your most recent water analysis results • Bring your fertilizer program written on a peace of paper • Bring the information on your injectors, what type and dilution ratios

What you can expect to learn: • Interpreting water quality and making decisions for your crops, bedding plants, ornamentals, vegetables and cannabis

• Water and climate control strategies • Understanding pH and EC and management over the duration of crops • Preparing a good fertilizer program

We have asked Dr. Mirza to actually take you through a fertilizer calculation in ppm so that you have no fear. Jackie Bantle, Manager, Ag. Greenhouses & Horticulture Field Facility will be on hand to help us out.

Water in the greenhouse:don’t be afraid… come to the workshop

January 2020 SGGA NewS 10

Watering and water quality are two areas that are often taken for granted in greenhouse opera-tions. if either of these two issues are not managed competently, the crop can suffer irreversible damage despite all other efforts during crop production.

Watering is often considered a simple task and is assigned to the less experienced employee. this is a big mistake in greenhouse management. if careful instruc-tion has not been provided to that employee regarding when, how much or how often to water, the crop can be irreversibly damaged. if water is not provided evenly throughout the crop canopy, cer-

By Jackie Bantle

tain areas of the crop may be un-derwatered while other areas are overwatered. When water is not applied frequently enough, plants will wilt. Even though the plants may recover during the next wa-tering cycle, the earlier lack of water slowed or even stalled pho-tosynthesis thereby slowing plant growth. Sometimes this lack of water will burn leaf edges, eventu-ally causing entire leaves to fall off.

When water is applied too fre-quently (ie. overwatering), new growth may occur at a faster rate however, this new growth is often very succulent and tender causing plants to become taller. this new tender growth will easily wilt un-

der bright lights, dry conditions or wind. these overwatered plants do not ship well.

if the growing media remains saturated for long periods of time, the oxygen content in the substrate is reduced, resulting in cell death in the plant roots. A damaged root system limits nutrient uptake, slows growth and stunts plants.

Good waterers can be trained. these days, however, there are many affordable automatic water-ing systems available for small or large operations. i have been to many large scale operations where no human ever gets close to the growing plants in the greenhouse: everything is automated. While this might be an extreme solution for a small greenhouse grower in Saskatchewan, watering must be taken seriously in order to grow a quality greenhouse crop.

Water Qualitythe best waterer cannot make

up for poor quality water. Many people wanting to set up a green-house forget to think about the source of water as one of the first concerns. there may be ample water available, but the question needs to be asked: “is this water suitable for indoor plant produc-tion?”

pH meter measuring pH of greenhouse irrigation water

Page 11: SGGA NewS - saskgreenhouses.comsaskgreenhouses.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/SGGA_News-Jan… · On your behalf the SGGA is pleased to represent the greenhouse industry, addressing

January 2020 SGGA NewS 11

“Poor quality water can be re-sponsible for poor aesthetic qual-ity, slow growth and even gradual death of plants.” (Water Quality in Greenhouses, Saskatchewan Ag Publication). there are many fac-tors which determine water quali-ty. Among the most important are soluble salts and alkalinity.

Electrical conductivity (EC) is a measure of soluble salts in the wa-ter. EC is measured using EC me-ters purchased from greenhouse suppliers or labs. Salts in irrigation water are transferred to the media in which the plant is growing. Salt concentration in the media and in the plant root cells determine, for the most part, the flow of water between the two. Water moves in the direction of higher salt con-centration. Consequently, if the salt concentration is higher in the media, water no longer moves to the roots. Controlling EC is a com-bination of using the water test performed by a certified lab in combination with the right fertil-izer required by the plants.

Water pH is also a concern for plant growth. the pH of the soil or media can affect the availability of nutrients in the soil for the plant. neutral liquids have a pH of 7. As liquids become more acidic, the pH decreases. For example, sulfuric acid has a pH of 2.75. Liquids with pH higher than 7 are more basic in nature: potassium carbonate has a pH of 10.52. Even if nutrients are available in the soil, they may not be available to the growing plant if the pH is too low or too high. Sas-katchewan is known for its high pH water which can be detrimental

to plant growth. in general, wa-ter that is being used for irrigation should have a pH between 5 and 7. if water is testing on the high end of this pH range, then it is impor-tant to know the alkalinity level of the water. Alkalinity is primarily a measure of the amount of carbon-ate plus bicarbonate in the water: carbonate and bicarbonate will raise the pH of the substrate that the plant is growing in.

Have my ramblings confused and frightened you so far? take a deep breath, that WAS part of my intention. i dO hope that you have a bit more insight into how impor-tant it is to have a good source of water for your plants and how im-portant it is to monitor that water constantly in the greenhouse. Un-fortunately, i have barely touched the surface of this discussion. Per-haps, you now have more ques-tions than answers.

You might be asking yourself: “How do i know if my water is ‘good’ for irrigating in the green-house?”, “What if i don’t have ac-

cess to the ideal water source?” “How do i monitor the pH and EC in my greenhouse?”, “What is ‘hard’ water? Can i use hard water for greenhouse irrigation?” “How do i know how much fertilizer to add to my water?”, “i’m using wa-ter from a dugout and that water seems to change throughout the season – how do i deal with this?”, “What are the benefits and down-sides to using reverse osmosis wa-ter in my greenhouse?”

i have a solution for your fear and your questions. Consider at-tending the upcoming Water & Fertilizer Workshop presented by dr. Mohyuddin Mirza on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. dr. Mirza is an expert in greenhouse production. if you have water questions, dr. Mirza can answer them. More information is avail-able about this workshop in this newsletter.

Hope to see you in February and until then…. don’t be afraid of the water!

Why is everyone talking vegetables?

the secret value of the Green trades Conference was found through the conversations hap-pening at tables around the room. With great speakers like dr. doug Waterer to inspire our dialogue, conversations about vegetables naturally followed his presenta-tion on high tunnels.

One conversation that stands out was from a grower consider-ing cutting back on production because they were uncertain how the economics will be this spring. this led to a discussion on how during these times the hor-ticulture industry has often seen growth.

By Glen Sweetman, P.Ag.

When money is tight, people tend to eat out less and want to grow their own vegetables to save money. this is can be an appropri-ate time to consider increasing in the number and variety of bed-ding plant vegetables you offer. Also consider how you can make gardening easy for new clients so they’ll continue to invest in years to come. do a few starter plants in larger containers that help people have better success make sense? do you offer the resourc-es like tools, seed, and fertilizer for people to garden? Have you considered fertilizer as an add on sale? Providing education to why

your customers should use it is more than an add on, it is setting your customer up for success and building relationships. Prospering plants due to fertilization will be attributed to your business, leav-ing the customer with the percep-tion that your plants grow like no others they have had before.

the buy local and home grown movement is strong with vegetables. Often, people need some help to make their dream to grow plants achievable. there has been a lot of vegetable planter ideas that look really good and are ideal for people with limited grow-ing space or mobility. i have seen

Page 13: SGGA NewS - saskgreenhouses.comsaskgreenhouses.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/SGGA_News-Jan… · On your behalf the SGGA is pleased to represent the greenhouse industry, addressing

January 2020 SGGA NewS 13

a lot of kids getting into growing plants in schools and enjoying it.

When people cannot afford a summer vacation away, they choose to “staycation”. this often includes investing in new green-ery to make their yard and home front look better. this can mean an increase in inexperienced, new customers. Assuming all your cus-tomers have been gardening for years might limit your sales. in addition, finding new ways to en-gage youth and get their parents involved in gardening will build your client base for years to come.

Another valuable discussion focused on adapting their busi-ness to meet the needs of aging customers. With some regular customers getting too old to han-

dle planting and care, they have stopped or greatly reduced their orders. this might be an oppor-tunity to provide that service and hire someone to make you even more money. Gardening is a pas-sion and a hobby. For most people it’s not about the price, it’s about the feeling. this service might even attract new clients who like the look but not the work.

then the topic went back to vegetables. A whirlwind of topics from carbon tax and forecasted increase in food expenses, the awareness of the public on where their food comes from, what is used on the crop, food safety is-sues such as the recent lettuce recall. the increased public aware-ness on vegetables is amazing.

One vegetable grower comment-ed the they have customers who buy nothing but the best food for their kids.

it is always good to evaluate what you are growing and selling, while testing out new opportu-nities to enhance your business. new plants and varieties, contain-er sizes, marketing plans and what you offer is always worth review-ing. For example, last year i saw two-gallon pot with one potato plant and another place had corn in six inch and one-gallon contain-ers as transplants. the business model “we do it because that is what we have always done,” is not always the best one. Get that cre-ative energy going and don’t for-get the vegetables.
