CONTROLLING SMART DEVICESRisto-Matti Keski-Keturi, ABB – Juha Mikola, ABBMinna Näsman, Helsingin EnergiaAbout the taskA specification and pilot implementation were donefor controlling service point level smart devices in adistribution network. The interface complies with IEC61968-9 Interfaces for Meter Reading and Control.

There are many contenders but no establishedstandard for the Distribution Network DemandResponse use-case. Our work shows that the CIM is

suitable for such use. The benefit of CIM compared toother similar standards is the underlying model thatcan express the structure of the power system fromtransmission networks down to the usage points.Another relevant standard in the CIM family is IEC62325, which defines the energy marketcommunication. Our interface can be mapped to suchcommunication due to the shared data model.

The specificationThe underlying standard defines most communicationscenarios, but our document adds identifiers andclarifies the specific use cases with examples andexplanation.One new communication exchange compliant with theunderlying CIM model was defined for exchangingconfigurations on a site, eg.• Listing the devices available• Describing their hierarchy• Describing the available functions.

The whole specification along with WSDL and XMLschemas is freely available on the SGEM public site. Itshould be read together with the relevant standards.

Research Pilot: KalasatamaIn Kalasatama Fiskari and Fregatti there is a total of95 apartments and 48 parking spaces from wheremeasurement data is collected. The measurementdata is transmitted to Helsingin Energia by CIM andcan be controlled by commands.

Measurement data from the apartments and parkingspaces is collected on a local data server by KNX,which then transmits the data forward to Helen. Thelocal data server is also connected to the buildingautomation system from where measurement datacan be retrieved.

Helsingin Energia offers a customer user interfacewhich makes it possible for every resident to accessall measurement data and control devices in theirhome on their own.
