Dear Colleagues, It is such a great honor to invite you to attend and participate to

the 9th Saudi Association of Neurological Surgery (SANS) Annual Meeting on March 3-5, 2015. This will be held in the prestigious 5-star hotel at the heart of the city centre Mövenpick Hotel Al Khobar. The core theme for this year’s meeting will be “Research is the Bridge to the Future.”

This three-day meeting will be compact with pre-conference activities, lectures and workshops that will be delivered by only the most respected and renowned experts in neurological field locally and inter-nationally.

Neurosurgical practice in Saudi Arabia is undeniably im-proving and continuously advancing over the past years. We therefore aim to use this meeting to present the true picture of a well-developed neurosurgery in the Kingdom.

One of the committed advocacies of every neurosurgeon is to advance developments in neurosurgical management through scientific research. In this meeting, we are encouraging young neurosurgeons and trainees to be involve in scientific research. Opening new horizons for neuroscience research through initiative and collaboration is one of the many goals of this meeting. Experts and well known neuroscience researchers are gracing this event to share and teach through their experiences.

Over the last few years, several scientific collaborations has been officially ratified in order to enhance research, training and education between University of Dammam and other international institutes and societies like Walter E. Dandy Neurosurgical Society (USA), Childrens National Health System (USA) and the Department of Neurosurgery at Cairo University, Egypt. This conference will be one of the scientific means of implementing such collaborations.

Consolidated scientific contributions from our colleagues (8 international and 20+ GCC and local) world will surely send every attendee and participant pocketful of new, updated and advanced knowledge and skills in neurological science.

Breif HistoryThe first attempt to establish a national scientific association of neurologi-

cal surgery in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia goes back to the mid-eighties of the last century. As the number of Saudi neurosurgeon at that time did not exceed the number of one hand’s fingers, all efforts were focused on creating jointly with the, by then, also very few Saudi neurologists a sin-gle society for all neuroscientists with various backgrounds. These efforts remained fruitless for more than two decades because of two reasons: First, the absence of a clear regulation in the Kingdom that governs the establishment of scientific societies and defines the authorized licensing body. Second, the small number of Saudi doctors working in the fields of neurosciences. However, in the year 1421 H (2000) a crucial transfor-mation took place that had a significant impact on all scientific societies in Saudi Arabia. In that year, the late King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz approved “The Rules Governing the Formation of Scientific Societies in Saudi Uni-versities”. These rules provided for the first time a clear system for the es-tablishment of scientific societies in the Kingdom. With the birth of these rules together with the increasing number of Saudi neurosurgeons to some thirty surgeons in the various regions of the Kingdom, the prevail-

ing belief was that Saudi neurosurgeons need an independent scientific association of their own similar to their colleagues in the rest of the world. Following the new rules, such an association must be linked to one of the Saudi universities. It was natural that the first choice was in favor of King Saud University in Riyadh because the majority of the Saudi neuro-surgeons were in that region. Consequently, a founding committee was formed in 1421H (2001) and given the task of preparing the bylaws of the association and acquiring the approval of the responsible authority in King Saud University to establish a Saudi Association of Neurological Surgery.

and advancement of the field of neurosurgery in Saudi Arabia in order to provide the highest quality of patient care.
