JUNE 2016 l THE BULLETIN 3Go to www.sfyc.org for the latest Club News & Events

FROM THE COMMODORE

The Club has been buzzing with activity on all (water) fronts – from regattas and cruise outs,to all of the fun support activities that go along with boating. The recent US Opti TeamTrials really drove home how proud I am of our Club and the can-do attitude and

dedication of our incredible volunteers and staff. Together, they stepped up to the plate andpulled off an incredible event with ~230 of the nation’s best young sailors racing over a four-dayperiod. When The SFYC last hosted this event in 2011, there were 140 participants, plus supportboats, coaches and parents – so in five short years, the event almost doubled in size. Thecomplexity of running an event like this is huge, and our great staff – under the leadership ofForrest Gay – did a fantastic job pulling it together and making it a memorable experience for all.Special congratulations to SFYC member, Will Foox, for placing 19th overall and receiving aninvitation to join the National Opti Team.

Speaking of creating memorable experiences, the 2016 Commodore’s Cruise is on and it’s nottoo late to sign up. It is going to be a really fun event with some great activities. If you’d like toparticipate, but don’t have a boat or crew, consider flying up and joining us at the resorts wherewe’ll be staying. Be sure to register soon so you can get in on the cruise swag.

Onshore, the Regatta Center Project continues to evolve and work its way through theapproval process. On May 17, The SFYC presented the proposed project to the BelvederePlanning Commission for a non-binding review and to solicit feedback from the PlanningCommission and the public. It was a valuable exercise and we’re working to identify changes wemight make that meet the needs of The Club and the community. The SFYC will hold a specialmember meeting at 6:00 p.m., on June 21 to review the status of the project, including costestimates and any plan revisions being considered. Stay tuned for more on this!

With summer right around the corner, activities around The Club are really starting to heatup, so be sure to check the calendar. If you want to race, cruise, fish, paddleboard or just get onthe water, it’s all here. If you want to hear great speakers or relax on the deck with one of Phil orRey’s famous cocktails, you can do that too. Heck, why not do it all? Have fun and be safe!

AUXILIARY

The kick off to the season was definitely akick - from water balloon fights on thewater, to the Club packed with Opening

We have three amazing raffle prizes thisyear, with something for everyone: an electriccruiser bike, a paddleboard and a Helen Lyallshopping spree. Big thanks to everyone who’salready purchased tickets and to the Auxiliarymembers who helped sell them. During Fridaynight cocktail hours this summer, there will bemore opportunities to purchase tickets at thesales table in the bar. You can't win it unlessyou’re in it, so please dive in to support youthsailing and The Club and increase your chanceto win!

Your donations truly make a difference. Infact, thanks to proceeds from 2012-2016Auxiliary Board fundraising efforts, we’re proudto pledge $10,000 towards The SFYC JuniorSailing Coach Boat to support the development

If you were wondering what all thelaughter coming out of the Commodore’sRoom one Friday afternoon was about–well, that would be the Past Presidents’Tea. It was so much fun getting caught upand hearing about the tales andaccomplishments of past AuxiliaryPresidents. We all have a lot to learn fromthese extraordinarily accomplishedwomen! Thank you to all who joined us,including Commodore Ed Lynch.

The Mother Son Dance, co-chaired byKim Lynch and Barb McCrumb, was sofun. Special thanks to Lynn Spiller for hercontributions. Lots of boys and momsenjoyed this pre-Mother's Day eventtogether. Anniversary Cup

With the start of the Anniversary Cup on April 23, the2016 Club Championship Series is underway. Thisyear, both the Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker

Divisions were divided into two fleets, with four winners ineach race. S/C Bill Melbostad and Vito Bialla (JR) and BrentCrawford (Fifty/Fifty) took top honors in the SpinnakerDivision, while Jib Martens (Freedom) and Richard and MarkPearce (Bolero) won Non-Spinnaker. We’re grateful tosponsors Dry Creek Vineyard, Martin Ray Winery, and WholeFoods Market for generously providing food and wine onClub Series race days.

The SFYC Race Committee is very grateful tothe village of volunteers who make our 30+regattas possible, each and every year.

Participating in Race Committee is a great way to getinvolved, meet other club members and give folkswho might be interested in membership an entrée toThe Club.

In 2015, we had more than 120 individualsvolunteer for our race program. Volunteers run theSignal Boat Victory and one or two of our supportboats (depending on the regatta), in addition tostaffing shoreside positions in registration and

protest committees. At major events, like the recentOpti Team Trials, we’ve had upwards of 50 volunteerson the water and 20 on land, each day.

To thank our volunteers and recruit new ones, the Race Committee is hosting a party on July 10, from4:00-6:00 p.m., on the Corinthian deck. The event isopen to all. If you've already been a volunteer, consider bringing a friend who might be interested infuture Race Committee fun. We look forward tosharing information about our race program, answering questions and enlisting new volunteers tojoin us on the water!

2016 USODA Team Trials

JUNE 2016 l THE BULLETIN 9

The SFYC was proud to host this annual regatta, whichserves as the qualifier for the US National OptimistTeam and determines who will represent the US at the

World Championship and other internationalregattas. For nine days, ~230 Optis, supportboats, racers and parents were onsite, so itwas a logistical feat. Thanks to carefulplanning and hard work of the SYFC teamand a dedicated group of volunteers, we roseto the challenge and ran a great regatta.

The fleet enjoyed moderate conditions throughout theweek, with eight-to-23 knots of breeze. The competition wasstiff, with races that sometimes had 70+ boats crossing thefinish line at the same time. The SFYC had 10 sailors qualify to

race in the regatta. Ultimately our top male finisher was WillFoox, who came in 19th and earned a spot on the USNational team. Sarah Young, SFYC’s top female racer,

finished 113th.PRO Bill Stump from Los Angeles led the

46-person volunteer team on the water.SFYC's Forrest Gay assisted the PRO and ledthe on-the-water check-out system. EventCo-chairs Carol Holder and Shar Foox

rallied an extensive onshore team as well, with greatassistance from Justine O’Connor and Lisa Turner.

Congratulations to the SFYC sailors, our volunteers andThe SFYC staff for making our largest racing event to datesuch a resounding success!

Presented by Matt Brooks and Pam Rorke Levy

Wednesday, August 17, 2016 • 7:00 p.m.

In 2010, Bay Area native MattBrooks and his wife Pam RorkeLevy purchasedDorade – theiconic oceanracer built in1930 by Olinand RodStephens – andembarked on acampaign torestore the narrow wooden yawlto racing form and repeating theocean races where she was vic-torious in the 1930s: theTransAtlantic, Fastnet,

Newport-Bermuda andTransPacific. This past summerthe couple completed “Matt’sCrazy Idea” – matching or bet-tering the boat’s original time inevery race and winning theTransPacific Race overall. Theyshare the ups and downs ofactively racing an irreplaceablepiece ofmaritimehistory andtheir plansforDorade’sfuture.
