Section 1: Accessing Google Drive   Google Drive is available to anyone who has a gmail account. You might find you like it so much you’ll want it for yourself!  Because it is linked to an email address, you can access the files saved in Google Drive, from most devices.   At SFX, our Google Drive is used in conjunction with our Google Classroom accounts.  While Google Drive can be used on it’s own, Google Classroom relies on Google Drive for it’s full functionality and we will be using the two applications together most of the time.    The three parts of Google Drive that will see the most use and that you will be the most familiar with are Docs, Sheets and Slides.  These are the Google Drive equivalent of Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.  Be sure that the student is signed in to the Chrome browser.  Their name should be visible in the upper right corner of the browser.  Click on the waffle menu.    

    

   The waffle menu expands to show you some of your apps.  Click on the Google Drive triangle icon. That will take you to your Google Drive.

   From here, your child will be able to access their documents and any work done within Google Classroom. If your child begins an assignment and needs to finish it another time, this is where they will find their work.    When your child was enrolled in Google Classroom a folder in their Google Drive was automatically created and named for them.  Each of their Google Classes has its own folder within the “Classroom” folder.   When your child opens an assignment in Google Classroom, it will be automatically saved to the folder for the class in which it was assigned.    

  By clicking on the appropriate class folder, student will be able to access all of the work for that class.  Double­click on the document to open.

Section 2: Using Google Docs  You will notice that the menus and commands in Google Docs are very similar to Microsoft Word.  Most of this application works similarly.    The one big change is that Google Drive auto­saves each document.  When completing an assignment in Google Drive, the student’s name appears on the assignment as part of the document title and they have a third command button, “Turn In” that appears.    *If the student is not working within Google Classroom, then there are only two buttons and their name does not appear as part of the document title.            You can see when a document has been saved. It reads “All changes save in Drive” at the top center of the open document.  While the student is typing, “Saving…” appears in the same place.     

   The “Share” button in the upper right is used to send a document to another user/users and allows them to edit the document at the same time that you have editing rights.  “Share” should not be used to turn in assignments to teachers.

Section 3: Using Google Sheets  Toolbars  Most of the top toolbar in Sheets is the same as in Docs.  Sheets auto­saves work in the same way that Docs does.  

  If the student is working in Google Classroom, there will be a “Turn In” button next to the “Comments” button.  If they are not working within Classroom, their document will appear as in the above image.      In Sheets, as in Excel, you can add additional pages to the spreadsheet.  To do this, click the “+”  symbol a the bottom of the spreadsheet.   

    

    To rename a tab, click the drop down arrow on the tab and choose “rename”

Section 4: Using Google Slides  Google Slides is very similar to Powerpoint and you’ll find that the toolbars are similar.  Like Google Docs and Sheets, Slides auto­saves as well.    In this program, the “Turn In” button is replaced with “Present”.    

      To turn in the assignment when finished, the student needs to go back to Google Classroom, find that assignment and select “Turn In” there.     

 After clicking “Turn In”, confirm by clicking “Turn In” again in the pop­up box.        

The assignment will now appear as show on the right in Google Classroom.  “Done” appears in green in the upper right.
