FACULTY OF SCIENCE Foreword1994-95 ANNUAL REPORT________________________________________________________________________
FOREWORD
In the past the Faculty of Science has produced a detailedand comprehensive report on its activities each year. Withthe increased size of the Faculty, the production of thisreport has become increasingly demanding for Departmentsand the Dean's Office. For this reason, this year we haveadopted a more concise form for the report and it has beendrafted in the Dean's Office. We anticipate that the AnnualReport for a given year will now appear in the Fallimmediately following that year and that the currency of thereport will make it more relevant and will increase itsusefulness. This first report in the new format covers theyear 1994-95. The financial data corresponds to the April 94- March 95 fiscal year and all other data to the May 94 - April95 academic year.

NEW PROGRAM INITIATIVES
Earth Sciences, B.Sc. M.Sc.Recognizing the importance of geoscience studies, especially in British Columbia, a B.Sc. program in Earth Sciences has been created to allow students to acquire knowledge relevant to thefollowing practical disciplines:
Environmental GeologyHydrogeologyGeology of Western CanadaNear-surface GeophysicsGeotechnical problems in mountainous terrain.
The first students will enrol in this program in Fall 1995. The first graduates are expected in 1998 and will have met educationalrequirements for application to the professional designation, P.Geo.This professional group is part of the Association of ProfessionalEngineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia.
B.Sc. Environmental ScienceToday’s complex environmental challenges require an inter-disciplinary approach to their solutions. The Departments ofBiosciences, Chemistry, Mathematics/Statistics and Physics havedeveloped a degree in Environmental Science which emphasisesa solid grounding in the fundamentals of science, along withintroductory courses in social sciences, economics and management. In the latter two years of the degree, students choose one of five specialty areas to develop a strong, focused knowledge-base in a specific area of environmental science. The intent of this degree is to train problem solvers, graduates who are highly marketableto potential employers in the environmental field. The fivestreams are Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Biology,Environmetrics, Pollution Transfer, Quantitative Techniques. This degree offering commences Fall 1995.
B.Sc. General Science DegreeThis degree program is offered for those students who may not wish to pursue a majors degree in one subject but who wish to combine studies through minors in two areas. The B.Sc. General Science degree has now been further modified to allow students the option of combining a minor in the Faculty of Science with a minor in a science-based discipline in another Faculty. Examples of the latter include Archaeology, Psychology, Computing Science and Kinesiology. This modified program will be introduced in Fall 1996.

Revised Biochemistry ProgramThe dividing lines between biology, molecular biology and chemistry are fading. The revised undergraduate biochemistry degree at Simon Fraser acknowledges the importance of modern techniques in the analysis of organelle and cell function. Molecular biology and biochemistry are taught in a fully integrated program that begins in the second year. A solid foundation in general and organic chemistry is a prerequisite. The separate laboratory courses taken by the undergraduate guarantees first hand experience and familiarity with the concepts. The undergraduate biochemistry laboratory courses are offered in the new South Science Building. This building which opened in 1993 is a state-of-the-art facility offering the best of opportunities to our undergraduates.
Graduate Program in Molecular Biology and BiochemistryIn the past students have only been able to pursue a graduate degree in either Molecular Biology in the Biosciences Departmentor in Biochemistry in the Chemistry Department. The newgraduate programme in Molecular Biology and Biochemistryallows students to pursue a common program stream regardlessof whether they are enrolled in the Department of Biosciencesor the Department of Chemistry. This will lead to a naturalsynthesis of these two closely-related subject areas within theone graduate program and will benefit graduate students in bothdepartments. This new graduate program stream will beadministered by both departments in close collaboration withthe Institute of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry.
Director, Patricia Gallaugher Continuing Studies/Faculty of ScienceA new part-time position, funded jointly by the Faculty of Scienceand by Continuing Studies was created to promote ContinuingStudies activities in the Sciences. Dr. Patricia Gallaugher wasappointed to the position of Director. During 1994-95, Dr. Gallaugher organised a highly successful public policy forum on the West Coast Salmon Fishery from which a number of other activities flowed, including a Coastal Communities Forum on the same topic. It is anticipated that other public policy forums will follow, as well as a public lecture series at Harbour Centre (Spring 96) and a series of Summer Institutes commencing Summer 96.

Director, John Simms Science Student LiaisonMr. John Simms, formerly of the Coop Program, was appointedin January 95 to a two-year secondment as Director of ScienceStudent Liaison in the Faculty of Science. Mr. Simms is responsiblefor developing and implementing an overall strategy for recruitingsecondary school graduates into the Faculty and for liaison withstudents in our B.Sc. program and with our Science alumni.During 94-95, Mr. Simms met this challenge well with the introduction of several new initiatives including Let’s Talk Science,a new series of brochures for the schools, an extensive visitationprogram to our main feeder schools, a restructured entrancescholarship program and a WWW Faculty entry designed for secondary and college students. Social functions for our B.Sc. students and an exit survey for graduands rounded out the picture.

RECENT RESEARCH INITIATIVES
A comprehensive review of the research achievements of the Faculty during 1994-95 lies beyond the scope of this Report. However, it is appropriate to comment briefly on a number of projects which are representative of the Faculty as a whole.
Synchrotron Radiation StudiesThe use of synchrotron radiation in the spectroscopic study of materials is a fast-expanding field in Chemistry, Physics,Biology and Engineering. Daryl Crozier, of the Physics Department, is a leader in investigating ordered and disordered systems using EXAFS (Extended X-ray Absorption Edge Fine Structure). He has carried out his research for some years at Stanford and is now a key player in the development of a Canadian-funded beam-line at the Advanced Photon Source at the Argonne National Laboratories. He received NSERC funding for this project of $1.2 million over four years. On completion the facility will be available to all Canadian universities but SFU will be the major user initially. The first beam is expected in 1996.
NSERC Collaborative Project on the Hydrogen Fuel CellTwo years ago the University of Victoria invited Dr. Steven Holdcroft of the Department of Chemistry to participate in a major submission to NSERC for a CRD grant to support research into the next-generation hydrogen fuel-cell for transportation applications. The project was funded in 1994-95 and Dr. Holdcroft’s research into electrically-conducting polymer membranes, funded at $150,000 p.a., is a pivotal part of the program which is centred on the mechanical engineering faculty of U. Victoria. The industrial sponsors and collaborators in this project are Ballard Power Systems and British Gas. With increasing concerns about automobile pollution, the development of zero-emission vehicles employing, for example, a fuel-cell is an area of fast-growing interest.
Research into Thin-Film SemiconductorsThe NSERC industrial chair in electronic and optoelectronic materials awarded to Dr. Michael Thewalt (and supported by RCA,Johnson Mathey, Crystar and Bomem), led to the appointment of Dr. Simon Watkins in Physics. During 1994-95 Dr. Watkins

established a laboratory for the growth of thin-film semiconductorsusing the technique of Metal Organic Chemical Vapour Deposition(MOCVD). This laboratory, funded through a special grantfrom the Provincial Government and a donation from the R.H.Webster Foundation, is state-of-the-art. With the appointment of Dr. Colombo Bolognesi to a joint position between Engineering Science and Physics, SFU has now built a unique team for the synthesis and characterisation of thin-film semiconductors and the fabrication of devices based on these.
The Centre for Experimental and Constructive Mathematics(CECM)The CECM, under the leadership of Jonathan and Peter Borwein, has provided a dramatic new focus to activities in the Department of Math and Statistics. During 1994-95 CECM ran the Canadian Mathematical Society Electronic Information Services project (Camel) and it is anticipated that on-line journals will be available in the near future. Camel may also begin to run services for SchoolNet under the aegis of Industry Canada.Members of CECM were Principle Investigators in the Multi-Modal Mathematics project funded at $300,000 over 4 years withinthe recently announced NCE on Telelearning. The CECM is also a principal player, in collaboration with UBC and U. Victoria, in the development of a proposal for the establishment of the Pacific Institute for Mathematical Sciences. The arrival of Dr. Michael Monagan in November 1995 will make SFU one of only four international sites where Maple software development is focused and will significantly add to the Telelearning and PIMS initiatives.
NSERC/CWS Partnership Chair in Wildlife EcologyAs the NSERC/Canadian Wildlife Service Research Chair holder, Dr. Fred Cooke heads up a study of the long-term demographic processes influencing representative bird populations in British Columbia. Two permanent field stations have been established, one on Triangle Island off the NW tip of Vancouver Island, and the other at Riske Creek in the Central Interior. A network of field sites also now exists stretching from Alaska to Panama. Amongst the bird populations under investigation are those of the Western Sandpiper, which migrates through the Fraser Delta each Spring and Fall; the endangered Marbled Murrelet in Desolation Sound; and the winter population of Western Sandpipers on the Saanich Inlet.Dr. Tony Williams joined the chair program as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in 1994-95. In addition to core funding of
