Week of May 13, 2013 SF Community School Dear families, Only three weeks left in the school year--and it is a busy three weeks! PAC meets this week (May 16, 6-7:30 pm). The Mzuri Mother and Father’s Day Celebration will be on May 18 th . 8 th Grade Portfolio Presentation week is May 20-24 th . 8 th Grade Graduation is officially scheduled for 6:00 pm on Friday, May 24 th at CAT/June Jordan (the last day of school before 8 th graders leave on their Yosemite camping trip!). A few garden events coming up this month as well: May 19 th is a Family Garden Workday (12-4 p.m.) and May 23 rd is the all- day Garden Party (with homemade pizzas made from garden ingredients and baked in the cob oven!). Contact Lindsey if you can help make pizzas n May 23 rd . Congratulations are in order: Nobie and Karen are receiving Teaching awards, Mary is receiving a Foster Youth Services award, and I am receiving an Educator for Social Justice award. Go SFC! I will also be officially returning as School Director next year. Thanks to the many families who offered support throughout this year and I look forward to working with all SFC students and families next year! May is Teacher Appreciation Month! Please consider posting a note about a teacher you appreciate at www.ThankaTeacherToday.org . On May 20 th , these notes will be sent to all SFUSD teachers to show our gratitude. SFC parents are hosting a Staff Appreciation Lunch on Thursday, 5/16. It's another simple way to show love for our hard-working teachers and staff. If you would like to help by donating food, money, or time, please contact Chi-An at (415) 845-4403 or [email protected] . Applications are now available in the main office for the BACR summer camp (K-5), which will officially be held at Alvarado Elementary. Applications will be available soon for Camp Edventuremore (K-5), location TBD. Aim High (6-8) will officially be held this summer at June Jordan/CAT. The city’s FREE MUNI for YOUTH Program has been up and running for several months now. Students receive Clipper Cards which allow them to ride MUNI for free 24 hours a day/7 days a week! Lateef and Samantha finished in 1 st place, Ady finished in 2 nd , Amaya, Eileen, Ady, Lia, Yolanda, and LaShay placed in 3 rd , and many others received medals. NEWS Students are wrapping up their projects across grade levels, and 8 th graders are preparing for portfolio presentations. All students will have the chance to present their projects to their families and peers at Project Open House on Thursday, May 30 th , from 6:00- 7:30 pm at SFC. Root beer floats will be provided afterwards as a celebration. Please mark your calendars! We invite all family members to watch and provide feedback to our 8 th graders at their portfolio presentations nex week. All 8 th t graders present before a panel of students, staff, and community members. Please contact Nora if you are willing or interested in attending presentations (Monday, May 20--Wednesday, May 22 nd , 4:00-6:00 pm). This is a great opportunity for parents of younger students to see our 8 th graders in action and know what is to come for all students as they display their knowledge, skills, and reflections at their final presentation at SFC.

  • * Graduación del 8 grado: 24 de mayo

    Estimadas familias, Nos quedan solamente tres semanas para este año escolar - ¡y son tres semanas muy ocupadas! Hay una reunión del Comité de Acción de Padres PAC esta semana (16 de mayo, 6-7:30 pm). La celebración de los día de la madre y del padre Mzuri es el 18 de mayo. La semana de presentaciones de los portafolio del 8° grado es 20-24 de mayo. La graduación del 8° grado será a 6pm en viernes, 24 de mayo en la escuela CAT/June Jordan (¡el último día de escuela antes de que los alumnos se van de paseo a acampar en Yosemite!). Hay unos eventos en el jardín también : 19 de mayo es un Día de Trabajo Familiar (12-4 p.m.) y 23 de mayo es la Fiesta del Jardín (¡con pizza hechas a mano de ingredientes del jardín cocinado en el horno afuera!). Hable con Lindsey si pueda ayudar a hacer pizza este día.

    Queremos brindar las felicidades: Nobie y Karen van a recibir premios para la Enseñaza, Mary está recibiendo un premio de los Servicios para los Jóvenes en Acogida Temporal, y estoy recibiendo un premio sobre de los Educadores para la Justicia Social. ¡Arriba la Escuela SFC! También voy a regresar como Maestra Principal para el próximo año. Gracias a las familias que ofrecieron su apoyo durante este año y estoy emocionada a seguir trabajando con todos los alumnos y las familias en el próximo año!

    ¡Mayo es el Mes de Aprecio para los Maestros! Por favor considere publicar una nota para apreciar a un maestro en www.ThankaTeacherToday.org. El 20 de mayo, se van a mandar todas estas notas a los maestros del distrito escolar SFUSD para mostrar nuestro aprecio. Los padres de familia de SFC van a tener un Almuerzo de Aprecio para el Personal este jueves, 16 de mayo. Es otra manera sencilla de mostrar el amor para los maestros y personal tan trabajador. Si pueda ayudar con donaciones de comida, dinero ó tiempo, por favor hable con Chi-An a 845-4403 ó [email protected].

    En la oficina de la escuela hay solicitudes para el acampamento de verano de BACR (grados K-5) que estará en la escuela Alvarado. Pronto tendremos las solicitudes para Camp Edventuremore (K-5), se anunciará el lugar. El programa Aim High (6-8) estará en la escuela June Jordan/CAT.

    El programa de la ciudad de MUNI GRATUITO para los JOVENES ha estado funcionando para unos meses. ¡Los alumnos reciben tarjetas Clipper, los cuales les dejan montar a MUNI sin pagar los 24 horas al día/7 días la semana! Las solicitudes deben incluir información sobre los ingresos familiares para determinar la elegibilidad pero no hay que proveer prueba de esta información. Por favor cumplir las solicitud de MUNI GRATUITO para los JOVENES no mas tardar que este viernes para que podamos entregarla.

    INDIVIDUOS FUERTES Todos los alumnos están terminando con los proyecto, y los estudiantes del 8º grado están preparando para las presentaciones de los portafolio. Todos los estudiantes van a tener la oportunidad de presentar los proyectos a las familias y los otros alumnos en la Casa Abierta de Proyectos el jueves, 30 de mayo, de 6:00-7:30 pm at SFC. Como celebración después se proveerán refrescos de helada con “root beer”. ¡Marque sus calendarios por favor! Invitamos a todos los miembros de la familia a observar y proveer comentario a los estudiantes del 8° grado la próxima semana en las presentaciones de los portafolio. Todos los alumnos del 8° grado van a dar una presentación frente una mesa de alumnos, personal y miembros de la comunidad. Por favor hable con Nora si pueda asistir a las presentaciones (Lunes-miércoles, 20-22 de mayo, 4:00-6:00 pm). Es buena oportunidad para los padres de familia de estudiantes menores de ver en acción a los alumnos del 8° grado, y enterarse de lo que venga para todos los alumnos mientras muestran su conocimiento, las habilidades, y las reflexiones en su última presentación a la escuela SFC.

  • Family Garden Work Day&

    Mural Painting

    Come out this Sunday for our last Garden Work Day of the year. We will be weeding, pruning, building beds, and doing other general maintenance

    on the school yard to get ready for summer.

    We will also be painting our Garden Mural!Come be part of our community mural project that the students helped to

    deisgn during our after school program. Please wear clothes that you don’t mind getting paint on. T-shirts will be provided for youth.

    All ages and experience levels welcome! Snacks will be provided, please bring some to share.
