JC Knives - Achilles Knife Craftsman: Jeff Conti Starting Bid: $200.00 Item #: 322047597907 Seller ID: greenberet_foundation Knife design history: This knife is the first combat/tactical knife I designed and built. I believe I began the design in 1980 and completed the blade in 1981. That first knife was sold in Fayetteville NC at a military supply store for $80. Since then, the blade has remained the same but the handle has undergone many revisions. Originally it was a narrow tang with a loveless rivet securing the handle to the knife. I used 60 grit sandpaper that I cut into small pieces and epoxied into cutouts in the handle for grip improvement. Now, I use the full tang design. I skeletonize (drill holes in the handle under the slabs) to lighten the handle and I taper the tang for aesthetics and for further handle weight loss. Also, this full tang design is far stronger than the narrow tang. Type: This design is intended to be a Combat/Tactical knife. It should stand up to the variety of rigors my brothers and I have encountered from the deserts to jungles. Any knife can be defeated but I believe that the blade geometry, style of build, materials and care in building have created the strongest knife I make. Dimensions: this knife blade is 6 3/8 inches long and 3/16 inch thick. The handle is 5 inches with a 1 ¼ inch integral guard and approximately 7/8 inch thick. Steel: D2 is called ”semi-stainless” steel. It achieves a very hard blade and takes a keen edge. It is tough and holds an edge well. It is somewhat difficult to sharpen due to this toughness. Also, since it is a semi-stainless, it will resist rust but over time it will take on a patina of used steel
