Seymour College VET Program

What is a VET Program?

A VET program refers to the Vocational Education and Training courses that can be completed as

part of a student’s school studies. VET courses are nationally recognised certificates that can

contribute to the completion of the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE). They are essential for

students completing a Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning certificate (VCAL).

VET courses are designed to expand the opportunities and career pathways of senior secondary

students and add an employment focus to the subjects on offer in the final years of schooling. They

can assist students with gaining apprenticeships and employment once they complete school and

provide insight into an occupation. They also provide a set of practical life skills.

Being nationally accredited, VET courses translate directly into further education and training at

TAFE.

Who are VET courses for?

Practically oriented students who want to do their VCE rather than VCAL are strongly encouraged to

do a VET course as part of their Year 10 studies. By commencing VET in Year 10, VCE students will

have completed the program by the end of Year 11 which will mean they can focus on their

academic Year 12 VCE subjects. All Seymour College students do a VET course in Year 10. They either

complete the Certificate II in Sport and Recreation or select one of the other programs listed in this

handbook.

VCAL students are required to do a VET course to meet their VCAL course requirements. For this

reason, they could commence their VET course while still in Year 10 or wait until they start their

VCAL course and complete their VET course over the two years of their VCAL studies. VCAL students

doing a School Based Apprenticeship do not have to do a VET course as their apprenticeship includes

their VET component.

Time Commitment

Students doing a VET course will miss their scheduled Wednesday classes. For VCAL students, this

does not present a problem as their timetable is designed to allow for a VET course and they have no

classes scheduled on a Tuesday or a Wednesday. Students doing VCE, however, will be expected to

catch up on the work they miss out on during their VET day. VCE students select five subjects in Year

11 instead of 6 as their VET course is their sixth subject. They have free periods during the week in

which they are expected to work on the class activities missed. VCE Students in Year 12 completing a

VET program usually select four subjects instead of five. Year 10 students won’t miss classes as they

are either doing Sport and Recreation or one of the courses in this handbook.

Some VET courses will require students to do a work placement which usually involves around 40

hours in an appropriate workplace.

Where will a VET course be delivered?

Most of the VET courses completed by Seymour College students will be at this school in the

Technical Trade Centre, Technical Wing or a classroom in the College . Some courses are delivered

off campus and students will need to make their own transport arrangements to these courses.

Why Choose a VET Course?

To develop employability skills including decision making, initiative, teamwork, cooperation

and problem solving

Improved employment prospects as some local employers consult with VET instructors

about their high achieving students.

Helps a student develop self-confidence and communication skills through participation in

an adult learning environment

Increases student understanding of different industries and their suitability to that career

path

Assists students with the transition from school to work

Helps students to explore industries areas of interest

A complete VET course is a nationally accredited vocational training certificate which is part

of the TAFE system.

All VET courses provide credit towards the VCE and VCAL.

Some VET courses are exam assessed (scored) and their results can provide a Study Score

which is part of their ATAR. Others provide a percentage increment towards their ATAR.
