Cut from the Lining (1) 8” x 9” (1) 20 ½” x 9” Serger set up. • 3 thread narrow overlock. • Piping/Zipper foot. • Width set at widest stitch.

Preparation for both zippers. 1. Center one zipper on the 9” edge of

the 15” x 9” rectangle of outside fabric.

2. Make a mark where the zipper tape

and the fabric meet at the pull tab end of the zipper.

3. Place another mark 2” towards the

zipper pull.

4. Trim 1/8” deep into the zipper tape beginning at the mark and continuing for 2”. Do this to both sides of the zipper tape.

5. Repeat for the 2nd zipper. Attaching the first zipper. 6. Place one zipper right side down to the right side of the 15” x 9” outside

fabric rectangle. Place the zipper along the 9” edge. 7. Place the right side of the lining 8” x 9” to the wrong side of the zipper (the

zipper is sandwiched between the 2 fabrics).

10. Place the notched section under the presser foot. 11. Make certain that the zipper teeth are under the groove of the presser foot. 12. Hold on to the tape part of the zipper that extends behind the presser foot.

Begin serging slowly helping the “sandwich” get started if necessary. When the zipper moves easily under the presser foot it is OK to let go of holding the back of the zipper tape.

13. The serger knife will trim some of the zipper tape off. 14. When you reach the end of the fabric and before you get to the zipper

bottom stop, angle the zipper to the left and serge off.

15. Close the zipper and let the lining and outside show right side out. This makes it easier to line up the fabrics for the opposite side of the zipper.

16. Bring the bottom edge of the lining up to the

top edge of the zipper. The right side of the lining will be to the wrong side of the zipper.

17. Place the right side of the 5 ½“ x 9” rectangle

of outside fabric to the right side of the closed zipper’s top edge. The zipper will be sandwiched between the 2 fabrics.

18. Pin or clip in place.

19. Open out the zipper and serge the top edge of

the zipper. 20. Close the zipper and let the lining fold down

towards the long end of the outside fabric rectangle.

Attaching the 2nd Zipper.

21. Take the 2nd zipper and place it at the top of the 9” x 5 ½” outside rectangle, zipper and fabric are right sides together.

Place the remaining lining rectangle 20 ½” x 9” on top of the zipper. The zipper is sandwiched between the two fabrics and the fabrics are right sides together.

22. Open out the zipper and serge the zipper in place.

23. Close the zipper. 24. Open the lining to lay flat.

25. Bring the bottom edge of the outside

fabric rectangle up to the top edge of the 2nd zipper tape.

26. Bring the bottom edge of the lining

rectangle to the other side of the zipper tape. The zipper is sandwiched between the 2 layers of fabric. The fabrics are right sides together,

27. Pin or clip in place. 28. Open the zipper and serge the zipper in place. 29. Close the zipper and turn the bag right

side out.

30. Lay the bag on a flat surface with the 2

closed zippers facing you. 31. Fold the top edge closest to the 2nd zipper

down ¾” towards the zipper side of the bag.

32. At the opposite end the lining folds and outside fabric fold will be almost even.

33. Place a pin through the lining and outside fabric at the fold just above the

top zipper. Do this to both ends of the fold. This is done so you know where the fold is when the bag is turned lining side out.

34. Turn so the lining side is out. 35. Place the bag on a flat surface and

reposition the bag so the fold with the pins is at the top. Check to make sure both zippers are on the same side of the bag.

36. Trim the zipper ends even with the side seam that does not have the zipper

pulls. Do not trim the zippers ends were the pulls are located. 37. If necessary trim the fabric edge even on the side were you trimmed the

zippers.

you get to a zipper hand walk the needles across the zipper coils. 49. For the opposite side, open the zippers about halfway. 50. Use a pair of scissors and trim the zippers even with the bag side edges. 51. Pin or clip to hold in place. 52. Serge the side seam closed. When you get to a zipper hand walk the

needles across the zipper coils. 53. At a sewing machine, use a straight stitch and reinforce the section where

the serger seam crossed over the zipper teeth. 54. Bury the serger tails with a Double Eyed Needle.
