‘SHOW & TELL’ LUNCHEON June 18, 2016
Sponsored by the ASG Garment Group
The Garment Neighborhood Group invites all ASG members to start creating items to share with everyone at the Show & Tell
Luncheon. You can bring anything you have made -- garments for you or your family, accessories, home dec items, quilts, crafts,
embroidered items, community service projects -- whatever you like to make. It’s fun to share this day with visitors, so invite friends
or family members to come with you.
For those who have never attended this event, bring or wear the items you want to show. You will be invited to come to the
podium to describe your project and walk around the room showing the others what you have made. Don’t be intimidated -- come
join us and have fun! This year, we are featuring the 2016 DENIM JEANS CHALLENGE which began November 14,
2015. Winners will be selected at the luncheon. The purpose is to repurpose denim clothing. No yardage or
new denim fabric can be used.
Other fabrics allowed in addition to re-purposed denim include: leather trim or handles, other fabric
trim, linings or skirt flounce.
The challenge is to make a useful item from denim jeans – purse, tote bag, skirt, tool holder or craft
item. Your imagination is the limit. Don’t have any jeans? Check with your grandchildren, neighbors, friends
or your local resale shop.
Our “Stash Sale” has been successful in the past. This year we are doing something different. Each member can bring one
item to swap. Bring something you want to “share” with someone and you take home a different item that someone else wanted to
“share”.

SEW SPECIAL ’16
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2016
UNITED PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, PEORIA ILFeaturing Rhonda Buss
The featured speaker for Sew Special ’16 is Rhonda Buss of Chicago. Rhonda is a past
president of the Haute Couture Club of Chicago.
The event will feature a hands-on handbag workshop for 12 participants on Friday. Rhonda
will be designing this project that will teach participants about zipper application, pockets, hardware
and other handbag construction techniques. We will end up with a finished bag. Saturday will feature all things sleeves including how to change garments by restyling the
sleeves. Samples will be available for different sleeve variations. Rhonda will demonstrate how to
draft, cut, slash and construct each sleeve variation. You don't have to be an expert because these
techniques can apply to even a simple t-shirt style garment.
There will be a trunk show of some of Rhonda's fashions. The afternoon will conclude with a
make it take it wool flower accessory suitable for a lapel, hat, bag or wherever. A small kit fee will apply.
In addition, the Saturday Sew Special ’16 will feature a noon style show by the state Make It With Wool contestants.
Some would say that Rhonda was born with a needle in her hand. Her first project was an embroidered handkerchief that she
made with the help of her grandmother at the age of five.
Once in high school, she took every sewing and design class that her school offered. With nothing more to offer, she attended
the local community college where she had the opportunity to study fashion illustration and costume design.
While in college, she took the limited fashion design classes that were offered, but finally had the opportunity to truly hone
her skills at Ray College of Design in Chicago where she graduated with a degree in Fashion Design. In her final year, Rhonda won
numerous awards for her designs, including fur and millinery awards.
After graduating, Rhonda worked as a designer for a dress manufacturer. From there she did costume design and returned to
teach tailoring and design at Ray College.
In recent years, Rhonda began writing for Sew News magazine. She has also been featured in Threads magazine, Sew It All,
and Sew Stylish. Her design was on the Spring 2014 cover for Sew Stylish magazine.
In 2012, Rhonda won The People’s Choice Award in the Passion For Fashion competition at the American Sewing Expo. In
2013, her design won third place.
In her popular blog, Rhonda’s Creative Life, Rhonda features easy to make designs made from simple shapes. She has a
passion for sharing her knowledge and believes that everyone can sew and create. They just need the basic knowledge.
You can find and follow her blog at www.sewbussted.com.

HOW DO YOU USE YOUR PHONE?
Whether you despair over the way people stay glued to their screens or not, if you have made the leap from rotary dial to
smart phone, you have surely enjoyed the many ways the phone can be used in your life. If you are not doing so already, here are a
few ideas to use your phone for sewing purposes.
First, you can use the calendar feature to keep track of guild activities, neighborhood group meetings, and meeting topics.
You can also keep notes of things you would like to learn to share with your neighborhood group leader. Our fantastic leaders are
always interested in what information you would find helpful and interesting at neighborhood group gatherings.
Second, you can save the websites for our chapter, local businesses, or online fabric stores as a reference. Some businesses
will even offer extra coupons if you download their application on your phone.
Finally, take pictures, take pictures, take pictures! Take pictures of pattern envelopes to have the measurements and notions
list with you as you shop. Or, take pictures of ideas you see at craft fairs, stores, or at neighborhood group meetings. Another
wonderful use for those pictures is as a resource for seeing how a garment is fitting on yourself or as a resource to consult with others
at neighborhood group meetings. Finally, take pictures of finished projects to keep track of your accomplishments. And, while you
are at it, send some of those pictures to Martha Gamble, Pat West, or Sue Barnabee for inclusion in the newsletter or webpage!
Martha Gamble, Neighborhood Group Chairman
SEWING TIPS FROM SUE
Remember to select one item you are willing to swap for someone else’s item at the June luncheon. This
year the luncheon has been moved to Bloomington. If you haven’t started your recycled denim item for the Denim
Challenge at the luncheon, you still have time! Bring a friend and have an enjoyable day. If you need a ride, contact
one of the CAB members or your Neighborhood Group leader.
We are again reminded that we need to make some plans of what to do with our sewing room which is
full of lots of valuable things. Be sure to inform your family of someone to call to help them with your sewing
estate. Your sewing friends are the perfect answer to find someone to help them find a good home from someone
who will love your sewing things as much as you do.
You can help by starting to organize things according to the type of sewing you do. Put all the machine embroidery things
the jewelry/embellishing things and the quilting things to gather. Another helpful thing would be to list all of your books, patterns, etc
in a file on the computer. It takes time but you can use it when buying something new and avoid those duplicates we sometimes
aquire.
Sue Barnabee is a former Family and Consumer Sciences teacher, and member of Haute Couture Club of Chicago. Her
articles and projects have appeared in Sew News, Creative Machine Embroidery, Woodworker’s Journal and McCall’s Quilting
magazines.
ILLINOIS STATE MAKE IT WITH WOOL
Have you started your Illinois State Make It With Wool project! 2016 is the 55th
year of the
Make It With Wool contest in Illinois. Contact Marilyn Donoho, 7450 W. County Line Road, Paw
Paw, IL 61353, (815) 627-9422, or [email protected], for more information and entry forms.
The MIWW contest offers the opportunity to focus attention on the beauty and versatility of
wool; encourages the use of wool fabric or yarn in sewing, knitting, crocheting, spinning and weaving
wool fabrics and yarns; offer the opportunity to compete for valuable prizes; and gives recognition for
sewing, knitting or crocheting skills.
Start sewing your wool garment now! It would be nice to have another ASG member in the
competition. The Central IL/Peoria Chapter ASG is a sponsor of the Illinois State Make It With Wool contest.
Next year the National Make It With Wool contest will be held January 2017 in Denver, CO.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Isn't it exciting to be sewing these
days? Technology allows sewing machines
to stitch out patterns and designs that were
only dreamed about a couple generations
ago. Some machines draw, clip threads
automatically, give sewing tutorials, have
wireless capabilities, and are fluent in
several languages. The modern sewing
machines are nothing short of amazing. I
am so wanting the Janome that can be monitored with an app
on my phone while the machine is stitching out an embroidery
design. A function not at all necessary to create beautiful
projects, but finally a decent function for my stupid smart
phone!
The fabrics, ribbons, buttons and trims available to
sewers these days offer limitless possibilities. Not only can we
walk into local stores to shop, the world fabric market opens
up with the swipe of a finger. Ever notice how fabrics
continue to become more lovely each season? I figured
nothing could top the beautiful linen I purchased last season.
Then comes along a bamboo linen blend in a soft kiwi color,
and oh my my.
Even basic tools and notions are exciting. Everything
from scissors to pins is offered for a specialized purpose. My
mother had one pair of scissors and a pair of pinking shears. I
have a scissor or rotary cutter for every imaginable cutting
task, and some are in designer prints and colors with
ergonomic features to avoid physical stress. Incredible.
I challenge each of you to get into your sewing rooms
and begin creating with all of the wonderful sewing items at
our disposal. Dig into that stash, finish a UFO, learn a new
technique and experience the pure joy of sewing.

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS
ANTI-OUCH POUCH
Anti-Ouch Pouches (AOPs) were designed by our chapter member Deon Maas. This underarm hanging pillow
is intended to add a little comfort to people’s lives during a stressful, painful time. The pillow hangs from the shoulder,
fitting snugly under the arm to cushion and ease the pressure of the underarm and breast area after breast surgery, upper
body surgeries or during radiation treatment.
Tens of thousands of anti-ouch pouches have been lovingly sewn and donated to breast centers across the United
States. The American Sewing Guild featured the Anti-Ouch Pouch as the 2008 National Community Service Project.
This will continue to be an ongoing project for our chapter. We take them to the OSF Susan G Komen Center,
Methodist Diagnostic Center in Peoria and OSF in Galesburg. The digital mammography is catching so many more cases so that our
need has increased. We would appreciate help making AOPs. If you have questions, contact Deon Maas at [email protected] or
Sue Barnabee, [email protected].
Please consider donating soft fabric, stuffing, or completed AOPs. We donate 100’s every few months in our area at OSF
Komen Center and Methodist Diagnostic Center.
Deon Maas and Sue Barnabee are organizing a booth at the ASG convention this summer in Indianapolis to make Anti-Ouch
Pouches. The Central IL/Peoria Chapter is assisting in booth preparations. On April 29, 2016, at the North Branch of the Peoria
Library we made 922 kits to take for the booth so attendees at the convention can make an Anti-Ouch Pouch to take home.
In April, Deon Maas and Sue Barnabee traveled to Madison WI, to the Public Television Station where Deon taped a
segment for the Nancy’s Corner segment on Sewing With Nancy about the Anti-Ouch Pouch. The segment with Nancy Zieman will
be aired near the end of the year. Pictured left is Nancy’s make-up artist preparing Deon for taping. Center, the control room oversees
the camera views. Right, Deon sharing the Anti-Ouch Pouch information with Nancy Zieman.
ANGEL GOWNS OF CENTRAL ILLINOIS
Loss of an infant leaves a sorrowful emptiness in the arms and hearts of their families who never
were able to bring the child home from the hospital. It can be an isolating time, especially as parents
try to find clothing to bury their tiny babies in.
The Chillicothe Christian Church is coordinating the project to make Angel Dresses from
wedding and formal gowns. The Angel Dresses are for babies who never recover in the neonatal
intensive care unit at Children’s Hospital of Illinois at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
The white and ivory gowns made for baby boys and girls serve as baptismal/end of life gowns,
which traditionally adorn infants in white. Navy, gray and black are used for pant sets for the boys. The
gowns are made to fit the small premature babies. One wedding dress can make up to 10-12 Angel Gowns. Each little outfit comes
packed in a special pretty keepsake box. In the box, along with the gown, is a handmade blanket and hat and booties.
Bridesmaid, Communion or Easter dresses, silky ribbons, lace, cotton thread and other notions or cash donations to purchase
sewing supplies will be accepted. Dresses do not need to be cleaned before you send them. Unless your gown has been trashed,
sewers have had lots of luck spot cleaning and working around damage. At the moment, we have a number of wedding dresses.
The next Angel Gown Day will be October 11-12 in Chillicothe. You can contact Dorothy Burnett at (309) 647-1956 or Sue
Barnabee, [email protected] (309) 647-0111.
CHANNEL 47 PUBLIC TELEVISION AUCTION
Central IL/Peoria Chapter created several items for a box that was donated to the Channel 47
Auction to raise money for the local PBS Affiliate. Shown are the items donated.
We are fortunate that Channel 47 has a number of sewing shows for our viewing pleasure.
The CAB plans to do this project again next year. Set aside something for our project. Next year
we will donate several theme related items. More to come on this project.

CRITTENTON CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER
Crittenton Development Center serves Central Illinois children and families by providing loving child care as well as a 24-
hour staffed crisis nursery.
The center is in need of crib sheets. The pattern is on the web site www.peoriaasg.org. You can donate them directly, contact
a CAB member for pick up or bring them to a chapter/neighborhood meeting.
Our chapter donates custom-made bibs, crib and cot sheets, burp pads and wash cloths to help defray the costs of purchasing
these items. Crittenton staff members have said the items our chapter provides are "much higher quality" than those they can
purchase. They are in constant need of sheets. Please consider helping. Supplies to make the items will be provided to you.
This year we will help support Crittenton Development Center by collecting coupons for baby items. Since these are time
limited, gather your coupons periodically and mail them to Crittenton Development Center, 442 W John H Gwynn Jr Ave, Peoria, IL
61605.
Our support at Crittenton Child Development Center is done by donating items that they need. This is a project we will be
continuing. Contact Pat West for information at [email protected].
NEWS FROM YOUR COMMUNITY LIAISON Amazing! That is what I think about the turnout and output of the Community Sewing Day on April 29th.The Ladies of the
Peoria/Central Illinois American Sewing Guild Chapter deserve a huge ovation for what was accomplished. In 77 hours of volunteer
time,16 focused workers assembled 922 Anti-Ouch Pouch kits! Everyone was busy cutting, folding, measuring hook and loop tape,
folding instructions and putting all the parts into plastic bags. Thank you to Deon Maas for designing the pouch for women who need
the comfort they offer following breast cancer surgery.
These AOPs will help educate other guilds at the national conference, where Sue Barnabee and Deon Mass will be offering
instructions and kits to take home. The AOPs will be stitched at the booth in Indianapolis. Hats off to Sue for getting sewing
machines, fabric, bags, and hook and loop tape donated. Also, thank you to those members who donated from their own stash. You
know who you are…you are appreciated.
Everyone appeared to be having a wonderful time. The usual chatting, laughter, and storytelling helped the hours (from 10-
3:30) fly by. It is always heartwarming to see a group of people joined together for a common cause. I am already looking forward to
our next Community Sewing Day on September 9th
at the North Branch Library. I hope you are too.

MEET BOARD MEMBER MARTHA GAMBLE
My journey with sewing has primarily been defined by thrift and insecurity. When I was young, my
mom sewed for my two older sisters. My grandmother sewed for me on her old treadle machine, which now
fondly resides in my living room. My school clothes shopping were always a trip to the fabric store. I came
home with a “wardrobe” of patterns and fabric. Sewing was simply the way everyone clothed themselves.
My sewing learning was a combination of home, 4-H, and home ec classes at school. With a cousin
who was a consistent state make it with wool winner, I certainly did not consider my abilities to be very high,
and what sewing I did was only done when necessary.
During college, I had a roommate who was a fabulous seamstress, creating incredible garments with her own Viking. I knew
graduating with a teaching degree, my budget for clothing would be limited so I’d better get comfortable sewing. I asked for and
received a Montgomery Ward’s sewing machine for my graduation gift.
I started doing more sewing for myself, and, eventually, for my husband, house, and, some time after that, my children. . .
until my daughter went to school and jeans and t-shirts were the only clothes that mattered. I stopped sewing almost entirely.
Then a few years ago, my daughter asked if she made it into madrigals, would I sew a dress for her. Since she had a hard
time getting something to fit, I told her if she’d be patient, I’d work on getting something made. I started working out how to do a full
bust adjustment and looking for someone to have as a resource on this new adventure. I found the American Sewing Guild online and
attended a June luncheon and Sew Special that year.
Though it was a few years until I could actually attend a neighborhood group meeting, I joined the Guild, and the amount of
knowledge and encouragement I found through ASG fueled my willingness to develop my skills. Unlike some others, I still primarily
shop for fabric at JoAnn’s, and my goal is usually to get a garment to look like the pattern envelope picture. Still, I appreciate the
quality and creativity others invest in their craft. Whether working out a thorny fitting problem or being incredibly impressed with the
work and skills of others, participating in the local chapter of ASG has definitely brought me joy.
This year, I’m the Neighborhood Group coordinator on the Central Il/Peoria chapter advisory board.

ASG CONFERENCE 2016: COMING HOME TO INDIANAPOLIS! ASG Conference 2016 is in Indianapolis, IN which is the birthplace of the American Sewing Guild.
The idea for ASG was conceived in the late 1970s by the American Home Sewing Association (AHSA), which at that time
was the trade association for the sewing industry. AHSA hired Young & Rubicam (Y & R), an advertising agency who conducted
research about the state of the sewing industry. One of the things this research “institutionalized” was the fact that sewers perceived
their hobby as a solitary activity, rather than a social one. AHSA set out to change that perception!
Y & R recommended a national consumer “guild” and created the original ASG logo, a pinked-edge fabric patch with “The
American Sewing Guild” on it. Based on the areas’ demographics, Indianapolis, IN. and Denver, CO. were selected as the first two
test markets. Although these two chapters debuted almost simultaneously in late 1978 with a series of fashion shows/sewing events,
Indianapolis was the first stop for each event. Fabric retailers in both cities (including venerable names like Stretch & Sew, Minnesota
Fabrics, Fabri-Centers of America and Cloth World and local media enthusiastically embraced the idea. Hundreds of sewers turned
out for the first fashion show in the Indianapolis Convention Center. Susan McKee, sewing and stitchery editor for The Indianapolis
Star, was one of ASG’s biggest fans, consistently writing about the Guild’s activities in the area.
In the beginning, AHSA thought that one of its staff members could oversee the Guild in addition to her existing job
responsibilities. It soon became clear that ASG was a major endeavor that needed almost full-time attention. AHSA hired Anne Marie
Soto current Notions editor, as the consultant national administrator during the start-up years of the Guild. Anne Marie made many
trips to Indianapolis and Denver (remember, this was before Facebook, Skype and all the other things that make interaction easier
today) to work with a core group of founding members in Indianapolis and Denver. These ASG pioneers helped shape the bylaws and
committee structure (including Neighborhood Groups) for our chapters. Although this structure has been tweaked and improved over
the years, their early input has proved to be enduring.
In 1980, Houston,TX and Minneapolis, MN joined the ASG family, followed by Orange County, CA and Greater
Washington, D.C. (1981), Seattle, WA (1983), and Syracuse, NY and Boston, MA. (1984). Several were initially very successful, then
petered out to be reborn later as vital ASG chapters.
During the beginning years of ASG, there were still many fabric retailers. The Denver Post and The Indianapolis Star
produced advertising supplements with the entire content, including ads, devoted to sewing. When ASG expanded, The Houston
Chronicle and The Minneapolis Star followed suit.
As part of the start-up program, each local guild had a chapter administrator who worked closely with Anne Marie and the
AHSA offices in New York City. As ASG grew, it needed a full-time national administrator who worked exclusively for ASG. AHSA
hired Edie von Kamecke, who had been Indianapolis’ chapter administrator. Although Edie was employed by AHSA, she continued to
live and work in Indianapolis which is another reason Indianapolis is so important to ASG’s history! Edie served as the national
administrator until 1992.
ASG continued under the umbrella of AHSA until the early ‘90s. However, ASG’s long-term goal for many years was to be
an independent, self-supporting organization with its own headquarters. We accomplished that in 2001 with a move that included
establishing our national headquarters in Houston, TX.
Indianapolis had another first in 1996, it was the location of ASG’s first independent national conference. And now, 20 years
later, we return to Indianapolis for ASG Conference 2016!
