President’s Message

David V. Ramjattansingh, D.D.S.

Seventh DistrictDental Society

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

It is my pleasure to announce and welcome you to the 148th Annual Meeting of the Seventh District Dental Society. We are pleased to have Dr. Harold Crossley as this year’s keynote speaker. Dr. Crossley’s seminar on Street Drugs couldn’t be timelier considering the new regulations and mandates involving the implementation of Electronic Prescribing in New York State that went into effect earlier this year. Opiate abuse in particular is an issue that we are likely to hear more about.

I’m sure many of you are wondering about the three dynamic figures on our cover this year. Not to be confused with Lori, Nancy, and Ellen at our district offices, these superheroes represent the “Power of Three.” Three years ago, the ADA began this thematic initiative to improve the effectiveness of the Tripartite. The goal has been to have national, state, and local dental societies work collectively and synergistically. Each level will focus on what it does best and support the others as necessary to maximize your member benefits and resources. What works with one state society or component will be a potential resource for the rest of us. The Power of Three also allows you to more effectively harness the benefits of the tripartite such as advocacy, community outreach, informational practice resources, continuing education, ethics and peer review counseling and product research and endorsements.

An important step in this direction is the impending implementation of the Aptify web-based management platform hosted through ADA. By year-end, most state and component societies will have moved to the Aptify program. This will allow for seamless interfacing of our web and member databases.

It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as your President this year. I would like to express thanks to the Long-Range Planning Committee, the Seventh District Board, and in particular Dr. William Zugner, our Business Chair for 2016 for his support and dedication to the district. Congratulations to Dr. Rick Andolina, recently sworn in as the President of New York State Dental Association. I would also like to thank our local superheroes, Lori Bowerman, Nancy Buckley, and Ellen Calkins for their tireless work and support. Our Society benefits greatly from their dedication, passion, and creativity.

Finally, I would like to solicit your help in keeping the profession of dentistry under your control. Membership enrollment and participation in our local societies is vital to a strong organization. While it is impressive what many individuals are able to do on their own, collectively we are much more effective against an onslaught of constant changes recommended by the insurance industry and other private agencies pushing their own agendas. Please consider giving back to our profession by keeping it strong. You are our greatest resource!

Warm Regards,

David V. Ramjattansingh, D.D.S.

Dr. Paul Romano grew up in the East Irondequoit area. At a young age, Paul was fortunate to have a close family friend, Dr. Vincent Tacci, introduce him along with his brother, Richard, to the practice of dentistry as a profession. Richard went on to eventually take over Dr. Tacci’s general practice while Paul chose to continue his education, receiving his Certificate in Periodontology in 1977 from Eastman Dental Center. That same year, he joined the practice of Dr. Jack Caton and Dr. Timothy Blieden and they continue to practice together both in Greece and in Webster.

We are quite fortunate that Dr. Romano said “Yes” when asked by fellow colleagues to get involved with the Seventh District Dental Society.

Paul was approached by both Dr. Steven Damelio and Dr. Joseph Viola to volunteer. Dr. Romano accepted a nomination to be a director on the Monroe County Board and shortly thereafter to join as a member of the Ethics Committee. Paul rose through the ranks of both of these volunteer positions, becoming the Seventh District Chair of Ethics and the President of Monroe County Dental Society. He didn’t stop there, moving through the chairs of Seventh District Dental Society, ascending to President in 2012. Paul was also nominated and is now a member of the Seventh District Delegation to the NYSDA House of Delegates.

During his tenure as President of both MCDS and Seventh District, Paul focused on our committee structure, identifying committees that could be combined, eliminated or improved upon. Under his

leadership, we updated and defined each committee’s purpose and composition. The project reminded us that we need to be nimble and flexible moving forward if we want to remain relevant, especially with our younger dentists.

Paul continues to support this organization with his time and his talent, and we look forward to a bright future knowing he will be in a leadership position.

In addition to his clinical practice, Paul has a position in the University Dental Faculty Group at Clinton Crossings. It is part of his appointment as a Clinical Associate Professor of Periodontology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. He sees patients ½ - 1 day per week, practicing clinical periodontology and dental implants. “I have the privilege of working in the practice with other members of the UR dental faculty, such as Dr. Cyril Meyerowitz, Dr. Wayne Lipschitz, Dr. Carlo Ercoli, Dr. Lee Pollan, Dr. Dorota Kopycka, and many others.”

Paul and his lovely wife, Michele Romano, met in New York City and have been married for 30 years (it will be 31 years at the February 2017 awards dinner). They have two children: Eric who lives in LA with his wife, Jaclyn, and works for Walt Disney Company in animation, and daughter Amanda who lives in New York City and works as a pastry chef.

“I was fortunate to get to work with Paul in his reorganization and consolidation of our component committees during his year as President. I also followed him in the NYSDA Ethics Council in Albany where he is highly regarded. Paul exemplifies the genuineness, integrity, and dedication that inspires us all.“

Award of Merit presented to

Dr. Steven M. SpotoThis award is given in recognition of meritorious

service and dedication to the members of the Dental Profession and Organization.

One of our more active but often unappreciated NYSDA Councils is Peer Review. The Seventh District Chair to that Council is Dr. Steven Spoto and as our chair he has guided his committee members through countless cases, always supporting the mission of the council to deliver a fair and equitable resolution process for complaints. This can be a thankless job, but Steve conducts each case with the same professional and respectful approach as the last. It is for his years of work on this council and his leadership as chairman that we bestow this award.

Actually, Steve’s introduction to the committee goes back to 1995, when then-chairman Dr. Thomas Paonessa asked him to join Peer Review. Steve volunteered on the committee, becoming our local chair in 2008. In addition to his service to this council, Steve also served as a Director on the Monroe County Board.

For those who don’t know Dr. Spoto, he graduated from St John Fisher College and then attended the University of Buffalo Dental School, graduating in 1985. Steve joined his Dad, Dr. Joseph Spoto, after graduation and in 1991, brother John joined as well. In 1993, they purchased the practice from dad. Both dad and Dr. Frank Ferrara (a close family friend and orthodontist) were Steve’s mentors and early in his high school years, he decided to do what was necessary to achieve a degree

in dentistry. “I saw firsthand how rewarding a career in dentistry could be as demonstrated by my father and ‘Uncle Frank.’”

In addition, Steve is a finance council member and a trustee at St. Jude the Apostle Church and Vice President on the board of directors for St. Jude’s Apartments for seniors, a state-funded, not-for-profit, senior living center. He also volunteers at the Dental Clinic at Mercy Outreach Center in downtown Rochester. He has been a member of the Apollonian Study Club for over 30 years and participates in several local dental implant study groups.

Steve and his wife, Karen, have been married for 30 years and have two children. Their son Michael completed his first year of Dental School at the University of Boston, and son Zachary completed his freshman year at Monroe Community College with plans to receive his MBA and start his own unique business. They live in Spencerport, NY, and his office is located at 2005 Lyell Avenue in Gates, NY. His other interests include spending time with his family at their camp in the southern portion of New York, hunting, traveling, classic cars and watching sporting events.

Congratulations Steve, and thank you!

“Steven has served the dental society for over 20 years. His knowledge and professionalism resulted in a seamless transition when he assumed the role of Chairman of Seventh District’s Peer Review and Quality Assurance Committee. Steven is highly respected by his peers on NYSDA’s Peer Review Committee and his nomination for the Award of Merit is much deserved.”

— Steven G. Damelio, DMD - Past NYSDA Chair - Council Peer Review

Award of Merit presented to

Dr. Steven M. SpotoThis award is given in recognition of meritorious

service and dedication to the members of the Dental Profession and Organization.

“Chris Calnon demonstrates many of the qualities of successful young leaders. His demeanor, communication style, flexibility, humility, integrity, responsibility, and presence reminds me of a mentor of many leaders from the Seventh District and the individual that this award is now in memory of - our own recently departed, Dr. Fred Halik. Chris is an extremely deserving recipient of this award and I commend the awards committee in putting his name forward for this honor. Congratulations Chris - well deserved! “

Frederick J. Halik Awardpresented to

Dr. Christopher W. CalnonRecognizing a New Dentist who has demonstrated

leadership and initiative in the profession.

An Interview With A New Dentist...Why did you choose dentistry as a Profession? I resisted the idea of dentistry for a long time. Growing up with my father being a dentist, family and friends would often pose the question, “So, are you going to be a dentist too??” Without much thought or reasoning, my answer was a consistent “no.” As time went by however, I began giving thought to my career path. I realized that I did not have a good understanding about what dentistry truly was, or even what my father did every day at his office. After spending many hours shadowing at his office, visiting a number of area specialists and learning more about the profession, I realized all that dentistry has to offer. The unique combination of science and artistry, coupled with the ability to heal and prevent disease, made the choice to pursue dentistry an easy one.

How did you get involved in organized dentistry? I witnessed the inner workings of organized dentistry long before I became a dentist. My whole family would often travel with my father as he attended meetings throughout the country. We would occasionally take a break from exploring whatever city we were in and attend some of the meetings. While I had little understanding of the content of the conversations, it always struck me that these individuals volunteered to be a part of organized dentistry, simply because the profession would be better because of it. So when I became a dentist, these memories of volunteerism and professional involvement drove a strong desire to begin giving back as early as possible.

What is it like working with your Dad?I thoroughly enjoy working alongside my father. Having the opportunity to work every day with one of my mentors allows me to

not only expand my clinical abilities, but also learn about running a business and develop my leadership skills. He has also instilled in me that our profession is best served through collaboration and working together towards a common goal.

What are your special interests?Family is the most important thing to me. My wife, Jennifer, and our two children, Erin and Ryan, try to spend as much time together as possible. We enjoy cooking, running, time on the boat and bonfires in the backyard.

Dr. Chris Calnon is a native of Rochester, NY. Following graduation from the Aquinas Institute, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from SUNY Geneseo and then his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. He went on to complete a General Practice Residency at Strong Memorial Hospital at the University of Rochester.

Following completion of his Residency program, Dr. Calnon joined the practice of Calnon & Cilano, DDS, PC. He has also elected to remain active in education and is the Assistant Clinical Site Director as well as a Senior Clinical Instructor of Dentistry at Eastman Dental at Highland Hospital.

Dr. Calnon is a past President of the Monroe County Dental Society. He currently serves as Chairman of the Board of the Monroe County Dental Society and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Seventh District Dental Society.

“ Selecting Dr. Mark Bauman to be an honorary member was such an easy decision considering all that he has done for dentistry and for NYSDA. He exhibits every quality that we could look for when choosing an honorary member and he epitomizes the term “dental professional.” He has supported us and makes us look good in print too! I only wish he could have been steered to the 7th instead of Saratoga so many years ago when he first started in practice.”

— Dr. Joseph A. Viola, 2016 Chair of Awards Committee

Honorary Member presented to

Dr. Mark A. BaumanRecognizing the distinguished

contributions to the profession.

If you ask any member of our district who attended state dental meetings as a council member, governor, or a delegate “Who is Mark A. Bauman?” you will get the same answer. Dr. Bauman is a great guy who has contributed an enormous amount of his time and talent for the betterment of all of us.

Mark, a member of the Fourth District Dental Society, practices in Saratoga Springs, NY. Mark has served tirelessly at the local, state and national levels. His résumé in organized dentistry is extensive. You may recall that NYSDA held its first Mission of Mercy (MOM) in 2012. As co-chair of that massive event, Mark was instrumental in its success. As an accomplished photographer, Mark has also provided all of us with a record of activities through his camera lens. If you see a great photo highlighting a NYSDA moment, most likely Mark took the picture.

As a talented chef, studying at the Culinary Institute of America, Hyde Park, NY and San Antonio, TX campuses; the Institute of Culinary Education; Rustico Cooking Studio; and The New School in NYC, he shares his culinary wisdom locally with women dentists in a program called “Dining for Dental Divas.”

We are so pleased to have Mark become an honorary member of our dental district and we look forward to celebrating with him at our Awards Party in February.

Dr. Robert E. Parker, III Award

St. Joseph’s Neighborhood Center and

Mercy Outreach Center

Community Service/Outreach Award

Recognizing a person or organization for their service for community and dentistry.

We have been very fortunate over the years to have many of our members volunteer their time and expertise at St. Joseph’s Neighborhood Center and Mercy Outreach Center. Bob Parker, III was one such member who supported these two organizations as they expanded their services and upgraded their dental facilities. Both organizations operate without any federal, state or local funding and both centers saw dramatic increases in the number of working poor who otherwise did not have access to dental services. We are pleased to honor both St. Joe’s and Mercy Outreach and we are grateful for all that they do for our community.

St. Joseph’s Neighborhood Center provides comprehensive health care, counseling, adult education and social work to individuals and families who lack access to health insurance. Established in 1993 as a ministry of the Sisters of St. Joseph, the Center is committed to raising the health status and quality of life of individuals and families.

“We have come a long way over the years and this has been made possible with the support of many wonderful people who have shared their generosity and kindness. From arranging off-site clinic for the MCC hygiene students to upgrading to state-of-the-art dental equipment, we are proud of our oral health program and clinic. Stop by and see firsthand who we are!”

– Julie Ruggiero, RDH - Dental Services Coordinator

Mercy Outreach Center (Mercy Community Services) was established in 1977 and was sponsored by the ministry of the Sisters of Mercy. Many of our members in Seventh District volunteered at the dental clinic located on Webster Ave. in Rochester. Unfortunately, after 35 years of service to the community, the Outreach Center closed at the end of May 2016.
