INSIDE THE SMBA

THE PRESIDENT’S

MESSAGE

DICK BECKLEY

This month's President's Message will be a bit different, in that it is intended to both state my feelings toward bluegrass music and its future, and to provoke thought and hopefully, response from those who take the time to read this column. Much has been said over the last year or so, to me and in print, about the changes that seem to be slowly taking place in the music we all love. I believe that there is a movement to redefine and change bluegrass music as we know it. I go on record here as stating that I am strongly against this movement. It happened to Country Music over a short period, 10-15 years ago and now it is unrecognizable as Country Music anymore and I never listen to it. In my opinion, if it doesn't have a steel guitar and at least one fiddle, it just ain't country music. And if it has more than one electric guitar and one electric bass, it ain't country music either. So that leaves 99% of today's country music out. A lot of today's bluegrass fans have come to our music from the old country music, because it is about the same. A lot of the old-er country stuff had mandolins and banjos interspersed in the music. In the 70's, the Osbornes and Jim & Jesse were crosso-ver country and very popular in country circles. They had a steel guitar and drums in their band, but today, many bluegrass fans refer to both these bands as Traditional, forgetting the crossover effect and the drums and steel guitars. I was a huge fan of the old style country music and also had a lifelong love affair with bluegrass, even before it was called bluegrass. When I was young, it was called "hillbilly" music. I was proud to be a "hillbilly" then and remain one to this day, just as proudly. In the early 70's the Seldom Scene changed bluegrass music forever with their still unmistakable sound when they released Act 1 and their big hit "City of New Orleans", made famous previ-ously by folk artist, Arlo Guthrie. They were hailed by some as innovative and by many as ruining our music. I was changed forever by their sound and still am in love with their music, today. They are my all-time favorite band, EVER! But I am also a big fan of true traditional bluegrass. I loved Flatt & Scruggs and Bill Monroe as a kid, and still do today. I consider the Scene and the Country Gentlemen, as well as many who followed them, as Contemporary Bluegrass. They took music and songs from rock, blues, and even classical circles and converted it to bluegrass and it was good, but it also still sounded like bluegrass. Bands are still doing this today. Balsam Range, my favorite band other than the Scene, is a great example of one that does, their latest being their Jim Croce recreation into bluegrass, which is excel-lent. As Ron Thomason famously states "I told you that to tell you this"! I believe this started with Mountain Heart, a fine traditional bluegrass band, suddenly turning into a psychedelic, rock orient-ed, and to me, bastardized form of bluegrass, that leaves my ears hurting and turns me totally off. I simply will not sit thru one of their sets, no matter what festival I'm attending. Worse, there

are 10-15 clones of Mountain Heart that have risen. The Hill-benders, Town Mountain, Rocking Acoustic Circus, John Cowan Band, and Natural Bridge are just a few. To me, this is NOT Bluegrass and getting on the bandwagon for this type of music is just helping to move our music away from what it is and should be, and totally change it and ruin it, like the high rollers on Music Row ruined Country Music. Larry Cordle stat-ed it accurately in his hit "Murder on Music Row". It happened to country music and they are trying to do it to bluegrass. You don't see it happening to Blues, Dixieland, Classical and other forms of "fringe or alternative" music, a category in which I believe bluegrass also falls into, and it should not be happening to our music. We should not let it, and should insist that it does not happen. We can do this by not supporting this type of music. Promoters, some Festivals, IBMA and others are trying to float this type of music as a way to attract a younger audience to bluegrass. I submit that the younger folks who truly want to listen to bluegrass will, and will add their contemporary ideas to it within bluegrass parameters, keeping the instruments acoustic while adding some content of their own. Other younger musicians will choose to remain tradition-al as they always have, but we do not need this ear deafening stuff that is being marketed as the new wave of bluegrass, ruining our music. The younger audiences these people are trying to attract who don't like our music now will not come over, even with these changes because bluegrass, in any form, is not their thing. The Gettysburg Festival is a perfect example of this. They have been trying to attract a new, younger audience to boost their attendance the last few years by booking these types of bands. There are more on the lineup each year and I see no increase in the younger attend-ance, but I do see some of the people who have been long-time attendees slowly leaving for festivals who still book real bluegrass. I ask that, if you feel as I do, you will voice your opposition to this trend wherever you can and to whomever you can. On another note, but still on this subject of what constitutes bluegrass and what does not, several of our members have voiced complaints to me and others about our SMBA concert lineup not being Traditional enough. One person called Steep Canyon Rangers a rock band a few years ago when they were here. Another said that they left after the first set of Balsam Range because they were not traditional enough. Still another complained that our 2012-13 lineup had only a few really tradi-tional bands on it and they would not attend most of our shows. For our 2013-14 season at least 8 of the 10 bands on our schedule, to me, are purely traditional, but most of these also add in a mix of contemporary songs to their sets, some-thing I think makes their show stronger, and will appeal to the majority of us who truly love bluegrass music, both traditional and contemporary. The Music Committee of SMBA strives to bring the very best mixes we can and the very best bands we can, to play our stage. I think that we have been very successful at this and our attendance and the rapport we have established with the bands playing our venue seems to support this belief. I invite anyone reading this message to send their written thoughts and opinions on this subject to Mike Foster, our Newsletter Editor. As space allows, I am sure that he will in-clude them in future issues of the Hornpipe. You can also uti-lize the Message Board on our website to start dialog and discussion on this and any other issue.

The International Bluegrass Music Museum SMBA is listed as one of only 5 current association members of The International Bluegrass Music Museum.

To check this out simply enter www.bluegrass-museum.org, click on membership and giving, on the list of options on the left side of your screen. Then scroll down again to associations under membership and giving, again on the left of the screen. There are 5 associations currently listed there at the bottom of the Assn. Membership blurb. We are one of them. Then again go to the list on the left of your screen and click on Worldwide Bluegrass. Click again on the left under Worldwide Bluegrass on Bluegrass Associations and scroll down to Seven Mountains. This is a link to our website. A well spent donation to IBMM on our part as we get the benefit of a worldwide link to our website, national recognition as a member association and we help in funding the activities of the IBMM.

This is an outstanding museum and one that the bluegrass community and our members can be proud of, and a desti-nation worth the trip for anyone interested in bluegrass and it's history.

This is still the best way to see the music, but if you want to see the many great musicians who are no longer with us (and the living ones who aren't playing tonight in your town), we've created Bluegrass On The Tube as the Inter-net's search engine for bluegrass videos.
