• Research is traditionally broken into two categories– Basic and applied research

• Basic research is necessary to further our understanding of normal vs. disease states but does not directly translate this knowledge into clinically useful applications

• Applied research advances the development of new diagnostic tests or drugs for patients based on our understanding of disease development and progression

• The primary goal of translational research– To integrate advancements in molecular biology with

clinical trials, taking research from the “bench-to-bedside”

• The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has made translational research a priority, forming centers of translational research at its institutes and launching the Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) programin 2006

• Study of cancer therapy– One prime example of translational research in

human disease• Extensive cooperation between basic researchers, clinicians,

and industry has generated numerous new targeted compounds with enhanced efficacy and decreased toxicity

• Translational research can also be applied to predicting response to therapy and resistance and sensitizing cancer cells to current therapeutics

• Currently, completion of all phases of preclinical and clinical testing of a single drug can take 7-12 years, but the vast amount of translational research being conducted around the world bodes well for more rapid advancements in the near future

I. 국가임상시험사업단은 의료산업의 지역 균형 발전과 임상연구 인력개발 및 핵심기술 개발을 위해 정부, 학계, 제약산업계가 뜻을 모아 보건복지가족부 지정 사업단으로 2007년 12월 출범.

II. 국가임상시험사업단은 대한민국의 임상시험 인프라 구축을 위해 지역임상시험센터 지정 및 시설 장비 확충, 임상시험 전문인력 양성, 임상시험 신기술개발을 지원. 또한, 국내외 관련 기관 및 연구자 간의 네트워크를 활성화해 ‘대한민국을 세계적인 임상시험 허브로’ 도약하기 위한 구심점 역할을 수행.
