THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM

IPR and license issues are among the major discussion points of the Open

Source debate …

… but this risks eclipsing the show so not covered in the session today!

Page 4: SETTING THE SCENE · 2016-09-16 · Microsoft PowerPoint - Setting_The_Scene_LuisJorge20160916 - r2.pptx Author: boswarthick Created Date: 9/16/2016 2:17:22 PM

(SOME) CONCLUSIONS

ICT Standards have a clear need to respond to the mega trend towards ubiquitous open source activities• OS will not replace standards• Standards will not replace OS• There is a gap but it can be bridged if we join up

alongside each otherSDOs need to react fast• Need concrete actions today to begin to use OS

concepts• But needs commitment from both sides• Standards development has to move towards

approaches used by OS communityETSI is well‐placed to move in this direction, building on our current position and experience

SO ETSI MOVED FAST…

And set OSM in a few weeks!

Some said “too fast” (?)• It’s never fast enough

when we need to reply to requests from the market

Page 6: SETTING THE SCENE · 2016-09-16 · Microsoft PowerPoint - Setting_The_Scene_LuisJorge20160916 - r2.pptx Author: boswarthick Created Date: 9/16/2016 2:17:22 PM

Page 7: SETTING THE SCENE · 2016-09-16 · Microsoft PowerPoint - Setting_The_Scene_LuisJorge20160916 - r2.pptx Author: boswarthick Created Date: 9/16/2016 2:17:22 PM

ANYWAY… WHAT’S WRONGWITH ELEPHANTS?

It all depends on making the right use!

LET’S THEN FACE IT!

solutions• Demystifying the relationship between

Standards and Open Source

THE SPIRIT

DON’T tell me “WHY WE CANNOT”…

… tell me “HOW WE’LL DO IT”

Page 10: SETTING THE SCENE · 2016-09-16 · Microsoft PowerPoint - Setting_The_Scene_LuisJorge20160916 - r2.pptx Author: boswarthick Created Date: 9/16/2016 2:17:22 PM

… BUT IT’S STILL AN ELEPHANT!

How shall we dealwith it?

A piece at a time, of course…
