Self-paced learning programs were such a success at the 1981 Congress in Dallas that AORN is offering them for a second time at the 1982 Congress. Participants will be able to learn by watching slideitape or videotape pro- grams, reading selected articles, and answer- ing questions in written modules. Sponsored by the National Committee on Education, the self-paced learning programs are an alterna- tive to the traditional educational sessions.

The hours for self-paced learning have been set to coincide with regular Congress educa- tion sessions.

Self-paced learning will be held in the Gar- den Grove Room of the Convention Center. Total seating capacity is 125. You are strongly encouraged to report early to preselect mod- ules and check out materials. Admission and title selection will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Each self-paced learning module takes

about one hour to complete. You can learn at your own speed. While it is possible for some participants to finish two modules during the two hour session, many prefer to learn at a more relaxing pace and just complete one module. Participants earn 0.1 CEU for each module they finish.

Videocassette modules

VC707 Totaf Knee Artbroplasty This tape covers diagnostic indications as well as possible contraindications for this surgery.

VC702 Surgical Anatomy of the Human Kid- ney and its Applications This is a complete review of the anatomy of the kidney. The program further explores the rela- tionship of the kidney's circulatory system to its collection system. The module explains why knowledge of intrarenal anatomy is important to the OR nurse.

VC103 Radical Retropubic Prostatectorny and Pelvic Lymphadenectorny for Carcinoma of the Prostate This presentation focuses on the perioperative nursing activities involved in a radical retro-

pubic prostatectomy and pelvic lymphadenec- tomy. Preoperative assessment and postop- erative evaluation are emphasized.

VC 104 Thyroidectomy, Residency Training Series, Lahey Clinic The video portion of this program describes the actual surgical technique in a thyroidec- tomy. Medfly restrictions limited to a few areas If you're thinking about bringing home some of those luscious California fruits and vegetables, you probably won't have to worry about restrictions due to the Mediterranean fruit fly. But it would be wise to check.

As of Dec 1, restrictions applied only to six or seven counties around San Jose, to Stanislaus County east of San Francisco, and to a small portion of Los Angeles County. Anaheim and the area surrounding Los Angeles International Airport were not affected, a state agriculture official noted, so travelers should have no problem flying out with produce.

The tiny pest lays its eggs under the skin of ripening fruit. After the eggs hatch, the larvae burrow into the fruit pulp. Mature larvae leave the fruit and enter the soil, emerging as adult flies.

The Medfly larvae destroy fruit by digestion and bacterial contamination, according to Sierra magazine. The crops they like in California include citrus, loquats, cherries, apricots, quince, peaches, plums, pears, apples, figs, and persimmons. They also occasionally feast on avocados, bell peppers, tomatoes, walnuts, grapes, and

cotton. At one point, the agriculture industry estimated that a full-blown infestation would amount to losses of $2.5 billion annually.

For the latest information, check with California Medfly headquarters at Los Gatos. The phone number is 408/358-1721.
