We’ve now entered the time of the year called “Ordinary Time”, at least that is what it says on our liturgical calendar. This is the calendar that is focused around the church year. It, the liturgical calendar, begins with Advent and ends with Christ the King Sunday. The days which make up “Ordinary Time” really makes up a majority of the church year. It’s called “Ordinary” because it focuses upon our living out the faith given us through the birth, life, death, resurrection and ascen- sion of Jesus Christ. It’s marked by our remembering how the Spirit empowers us to carry on the ministry of Christ, throughout our very lives. I’ve never been a fan of “Ordinary Time” for I don’t find any time to be ordinary. Each day God blesses us with what seems to me to be extraordinary. Here is what one website had to say about “Ordinary Time”. The term "Ordinary Time" may be misleading. In the context of the liturgical year the term "ordinary" does not mean "usual or average." Ordinary here means "not seasonal." Ordinary Time is that part of the Liturgical Year that lies outside the seasons of Lent-Easter and Advent-Christmas. In Ordinary Time, the Church cele- brates the mystery of Christ not in one specific aspect but in all its aspects. The readings during the liturgies of Ordinary Time help to instruct us on how to live out our Christian faith in our daily lives. So as we enter the summer months and life takes on a little bit different pace, we are also afforded time to think about our Christian faith and living each day for Christ. So my question for each of us is how will we use these long days of summer to help us grow in Christ? One thing I’ve noticed through my ministry at Community Presbyterian is how worship attendance doesn’t have a summer time slump, in fact our average at- tendance for June August can be higher than the rest of the year. Why? More of us stay home during summer and take vacations in the Fall, Winter or Spring. What you might want to consider is attending one of our Sunday school classes if you don’t already. The class I lead is reading through the Old Testament. This will be at least an eight month journey or longer. We began a few weeks ago and are in the opening chapters of Genesis. So this would be a great time to join the class. The other adult class takes a look at the lectionary readings for Sunday. It’s a great way to take a look at what you’ll be hearing once you get into worship. Along with these we also have the lectionary focus group that meets on Monday after- noons at 3 pm to look at the readings for the coming week. During these long days of Summer, let us find many ways to grow in faith and faithfulness in relationship with one another and our Lord, Jesus Christ. Summer time blessings on one and all, Dennis

It’s called “Ordinary” because it focuses upon our living out the faith given us through the birth, life, death, resurrection and ascen-sion of Jesus Christ.

In the context of the liturgical year the term "ordinary" does not mean "usual or average." Ordinary here means "not

seasonal." Ordinary Time is that part of the Liturgical Year that lies outside the seasons of Lent-Easter and Advent-Christmas. In Ordinary Time, the Church cele-brates the mystery of Christ not in one specific aspect but in all its aspects. The

readings during the liturgies of Ordinary Time help to instruct us on how to live out our Christian faith in our daily lives.

So as we enter the summer months and life takes on a little bit different pace, we are also afforded time to think about our Christian faith and living each day for Christ.

So my question for each of us is how will we use these long days of summer to help us grow in Christ?

One thing I’ve noticed through my ministry at Community Presbyterian is how worship attendance doesn’t have a summer time slump, in fact our average at-tendance for June – August can be higher than the rest of the year.

Along with these we also have the lectionary focus group that meets on Monday after-noons at 3 pm to look at the readings for the coming week.

During these long days of Summer, let us find many ways to grow in faith and faithfulness in relationship with one another and our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Summer time blessings on one and all,

Session Digest May 21, 2015

Nine of the twelve elders were present for the April Stated Session meeting.

Pastor Dennis opened the meeting with prayer and then lead the elders in exploring how we experience God’s Spirit. The elders looked at Acts 2:1-21 and portions of “A Brief Confession of Faith”. Lots of sharing with one another and then prayers that God’s Spirit be with us and Christ’s Body the Church.

The elders then heard reports on progress made on plans for the preservation and upgrades to the sanctuary and old fellowship hall areas of the church.

The pastor is working on contacting members of the church to serve on the Capital Funds/Stewardship Commit-

tee. Progress has been made but he is still seeking two members to serve on this important committee.

The committee working on preserving and upgrades to the facility made a recommendation to the session to

accept the bid from Larry Ray electric and to begin with the electrical project immediately. In the area of replac-ing needed plumbing, the elders decided to take a close look at the two bids and references. This committee will continue its work looking at the whole project and needs of the church.

Children/Youth Sunday Breakfast: Elder Ken Bavuso reported 6 youth attended the breakfasts. It was decided

to put fliers in the Sunday bulletin, encouraging members to share it with neighbors and friends.

Elder Ed Legge will be working on 'Getting to Know Your Elders' articles to be placed in the monthly chimes.

Permission was granted to Girl Scout troop 70373 to begin meeting at the church on Thursday evenings from 6

to 8 pm in the fall. Their meetings will be held in the Old Fellowship Hall but also in the New if needed because of the facility upgrades.

Committee Reports:

Budget & Finance: It was noted that income for the first quarter is higher than in 2014 and also expenses were lower. On top of that good news, in April we had a very generous gift from a charitable trust. Then we also had a member who had a boat they wanted to sell and give the proceeds to the church. This was accomplished

thanks to the help of Buddy and Ben Roberts. This will show up in the May financial report. Please see the finan-cial report in the newsletter. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to call the church office.

Building & Grounds: Len Clifford and Ralph Taylor are working on the church lawn; fertilizing, weeding and mowing. Also the oven in the new fellowship hall will be looked at to see what needed repairs are needed to help make it safe and functional.

Care of Members – C.J. Gailey and Mary Parr: Lera Warren, Pauline Ritterbush and Vera Hardin gave a combi-

nation Birthday/Mother's Day party at the Forsyth Care Center. They presented the ladies with Mardi Gras beads as gifts. It is the committee's goal to return the first Friday of June for another birthday celebration. Lera asks if anyone is willing to bake a birthday cake to call her for the schedule.

Gayle Bavuso mailed 11 cards to members and friends of the church. She is asking for cards if anyone has some to donate and also the cost of stamps. Pastor Winzenried stated the stamps would be an office expense

and would get Gayle a roll of stamps.

Evangelism & Mission – Screen door calls – Elder Ed Legge asked to be provided a list of guests attending Sun-day worship service so the screen door calls could be initiated. The church office will provide the information.

Elders approved the renewal of the contract on the Church’s Billboard on Hwy. Y at a cost of $1500.

As a local mission, the session voted to match ETC's funding of two summer scholarships in the amount of $360 per student to children attending the Boys and Girls Club summer program in Forsyth. Buddy Roberts moved and Len Clifford seconded the motion to fund 2 scholarships. Motion carried. A total of 4 scholarships will be

funded by FCPC and ETC - $720 each group respectfully.

Worship & Education – The session wishes to thank Anna Koelling and Dr. Reed Click for their continued excel-lent work with the youth.

Session adjourned at 8:05pm. Next Session meeting will be Thursday June 18 at 6:30 pm.

bers and friends of the church. Cost of the book is a

The June meeting of the Bookie Club is scheduled for Thursday, June 4. As usual, we will be meeting at 10:30 AM in the hospitality room at Forsyth Community Presbyterian Church. We will be discussing A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian

Trail by Bill Bryson. Bryson relates the adventures and misadventures of two totally unfit hikers as he and longtime friend Stephen Katz traverse the 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail. Returning from more than twenty years in Britain, he set out to rediscover his homeland, but the two men find themselves awed by the terrain and stymied by the unfamiliar local culture.

For the July meeting, we will be discussing The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay. In 1939, as Hitler casts his enormous, cruel shadow across the world, the seeds of apartheid take root in South Africa. There, a boy called Peekay is born. His childhood is marked by humiliation and abandonment, yet he vows to survive and conceives heroic dreams which are nothing compared to what life actually has in store for him. Join us and bring a friend!

The Bookies

Quote of the Month:

May God give you...for every storm, a rainbow; for every tear, a smile, for every care, a promise; an answer for each prayer.

It is hard to believe that school is out and summer fun is on the way. May is always such a busy month with Mother’s Day, graduations and Memorial Day so it seems like June should be the month to take it easy and be renewed. But that is not the case in a lot of churches. It is Vacation Bible School time. I have read about some VBS preparation in several newsletters and it sounds like there will be a lot of fun stuff happening around JCP this summer.

Another summer happening is church camp. Mound Ridge and Westminster Woods are gearing up for lots of amazing camps this summer. And First Presbyterian in Joplin is hosting a traveling day camp in July. If you need information on what is available, go to the Presbytery website under Presbytery Community - Camps and Conference Centers. There are camp scholarships available from JCP and that application is also on the website.

We would love to post some of your VBS and camp pictures on the website. Please send them to us at [email protected]. I think it would be fun to see all the different settings for these summer adventures.

Looking forward to hearing about your adventures and seeing pictures of all the fun. Have a great summer. Pastor Susan Rosenbaum.

PANTHER PARTNERS MENTOR PROGRAM CELEBRATION DINNER

Mentors, school staff, and pastors celebrated together on April 30, 2015, at our church. There were 63 mentors this year, including 13 new mentors who began last fall. Community Presbyterian deserves recognition as this church has provided 18 of the 63 mentors this

past year.

We enjoyed a lasagna dinner, prepared by the mentor planning committee. This committee consists of a representative from each of the 9 churches involved in the mentor program. Members of the committee from Community Presbyterian (all of whom have served on the committee since 2007) include Pastor Dennis,

Pat Seals, Gretchen Keith, and Jeanne Legge.

Silver Dollar City’s Care for Kids has partnered with our mentor program since we began in 2007. They now are offering incentives to mentors: a free ticket to Silver Dollar City or Whitewater once you complete your first and second years of mentoring. For those who have mentored from 3 to 7 years, 3 free tick-ets are provided. And if a mentor recruits an-other mentor, they are rewarded with another free ticket! We greatly appreciate their con-

tinued support for the mentor program!

Kindergarten teachers already have selected students who they feel could benefit from a one-on-one relationship with a mentor this fall and hopefully we will have 20 new volunteers to begin mentoring these 20 first graders in September. The teachers have often request-ed a male mentor for the little boys—unfortunately, we don’t have enough men vol-unteers to meet the request. Please pray about how you could be a blessing to a child through the mentor program this fall. If you talk with one of the mentors, you will see how their lives have also been blessed by being a

mentor!

ever: Sums it up!

(The following information was shared by Rose Franceschini at the April potluck. Many people asked for the information in print so here it is.)

Main Source: The People’s Pharmacy—FM 90.5, 1 P.M. Sundays (public radio). Also see peoplespharmacy.com and People’s Pharmacy Guide to Home & Herbal Remedies, 615.3 Graedon, at the Forsyth Library. Also, a guest on this show, the wonderful Dr. Tieraona Low Dog, physician and director of alternative medicine in Arizona. Her website is drlow-dog.com.

Antibiotic—Garlic, onion, thyme, oregano, cranberries Anti-Inflammatory—Turmeric, cherries Anti-oxidant- Cherries, dark chocolate or co-coa, Goji berries Skin, bones, eyes—Apricots, carrots, kiwi Calcium—Sesame seeds Nausea—Instant “hurling” preventative: cin-namon powder (ground cinnamon) in a big spoon with some water to keep powder from running up your nose (I found out the hard way!)- chug this and the nausea will stop in-stantly. Anti-viral & good for stomach & circula-tion—ginger

The Mediterranean diet uses lots of raw veg-gies and is almost void of meat, butter, cheese, milk. DO add dairy and eggs now and again to get the absolutely necessary vitamin B12 for nervous system. Grains– powerhouse sources for muscles and energy; use whole grains, mostly oats & rice, brown rice (good for the hair!) Consult book/website for further info. Train your “spoiled” tastebuds by adding small amounts of herbs, etc. to almost everything you eat. Experiment, have fun!

Thank you, Rose Franceschini

PANTHER PARTNERS MENTOR PROGRAM

A child will soon forget the “presents” you give them, but they’ll never forget your “presence” in their life.

Spring is here! And that means it’s time to seek volunteers who would like to mentor a first grader at Forsyth Elementary School for this fall! We have found

that meeting with the child for 30 minutes a week seems to work best. We’ve had fun getting to know our child through games and puzzles (available in the Game

Closet in the room where we meet one-on-one with the child), through reading

books, or eating lunch with them.

We currently have 61 mentors from 8 area churches who are enjoying their mentor-

ing experience. Our goal is for our current mentors to continue this fall with the

same child who will be advancing to the next grade. Hopefully there will be 20 new

volunteers each fall to mentor incoming 1st graders. These are children who can

benefit from a long-term, positive role model in their lives. If you have any ques-

tions about being a mentor, please call Jeanne Legge at 546-3255 or talk with one of

the other mentors to get some feedback about their experiences.

Many of us travel during the year but have been able to send postcards to the child

while we’re gone and share our adventures/pictures with the child upon our return. So, your travel shouldn’t be a barrier in being a mentor.

Training will be provided to mentors in early September. Please pray about how you

can be part of this great opportunity to show God’s love for the children of Forsyth and, in turn, have a rewarding experience.

If you want to volunteer, or are just curious and need more information, please leave

this form in the church office or in the offering plate.

Strength and Yoga for Everyone

Tuesday mornings, 9:00 a.m.

We will now be incorporating some small dumbbells and weights into our practice, and we wanted to emphasize the fact that this is a class which increases your strength as well as your mobility, flexibil-ity, and focus, by using Chairs, walls, mats, your own bodyweight, and small weights--not to mention the cardiovascu-lar and de-stressing benefits!!!

This is an 8 week session, at a cost of $50. If you can’t make the 8 weeks or would like to just drop in to see if you would like a class, Robyn has some ideas to help you

out with that. Visit http://robynhurst.com/rates-prices-options-oh-my/ or you can call her at 417-231-1826.
