Paul Woods

As a genetics student at the University of Western Ontario near Toronto, Canada, Paul Woods invented DIRECT TO ETHANOL® technology in 1984 by enhancing metabolic pathways and over-expressing fennentation pathway enzymes in blue-green algae for the production of ethanol.   While keeping his ethanol idea brewing in the background, and investing almost $600,000 on patents, Woods established a track record of bui lding energ y companies. He founded, grew, and sold two natural-gas brokerages with combined annual revenue of $175 million between 1989 and 2000. Then, he retired at age 38.   But retirement did not suit Paul. Woods had lived part-time in Florida since the early 1990s and moved to Southwest Florida in 2005 to turn his attention to founding and building Algenol Biofuels. Woods founded Algenol Biofuels in 2006 with three partners, who now make up the company’s board of directors. Also in 2006, a molecular biology laboratory was established in Berlin, Germany with a team of researchers dedicated to enhancing the process, which later became a wholly owned subsidiary of Algenol.   With a $25 million grant from the US Department of Energy awarded in 2009 for a pi lot-scale integrated bioref iner y and a $10 mil l ion economic development incentive grant from Lee County Florida, awarded in 2010, Algenol entered a period of rapid expansion. That expansion started with the construction of a commercial development campus in Fort Myers, FL and the relocation of personnel from Loxahatchee, Baltimore and Atlanta to consolidate US operations in Southwest Florida. In October 2010, the molecular biology, analytical chemistry and engineering laboratories of the new facility began operations and an outdoor aquaculture process development unit began operations shortly thereafter in February 2011.

After raising an additional $90 million in private f inancing in the summer of 2011, Algenol entered a second period of rapid expansion and hiring, primarily to support the construction of its pi lot-scale integrated biorefinery. The integrated biorefinery wil l be the f irst large-scale deployment of Algenol’s patented DIRECT TO ETHANOL technology. Multiple locations competed to attract the bioref inery to their area, which is an interesting aspect of Algenol’s history.

Today, Paul Woods is the Chairman, Chief Executive Officer, and President of Algenol Biofuels of Lee County FL. Woods and Algenol currently hold 31 patents and have 63 patents pending. Algenol produces ethanol directly using proprietary algae, sunlight, non-Arable land and carbon dioxide. The process has operating costs of $1.27 per gal lon and production rates of 8,000 gallons of ethanol per acre per year. Waste algae is then processed by hydrothennal l iquefaction gasoline, dieseling jet fuel and for an additional 1,300 gallons. Algenol currently employs 125 employees in Florida and 40 employees in Germany.
