4. Long Answer Questions:
(a) Personal communication takes place between the sender and the receiver. Personal
communication takes place between family and friends. Telephone, letters, e-mails and faxes
are some means of personal communication. It is different from mass communication which
takes place with a large number of people. Newspapers, magazines, television, radio and
cinema are the means of mass communication.
(b) Advertisements are an effective means of communication. They are very useful. They
give us the information about the products available in the market. Our government uses
advertisements through radio, television and newspapers to spread social awareness
messages among the people.
(c) Early humans communicated with each other through signs. They kept a record of their
lives by drawing pictures on the wall of caves. Later, they learnt to draw symbols to
represent sounds used in speech. This was their first alphabet. Then they learnt how to record
their thoughts and ideas on clay tablet, papyrus sheets, palm leaves and eventually paper. In
ancient times, means used for communication were very slow. Messages were sent through a
bird or with a messenger on a horse. Hence, it took many days or even months for messages
to reach.
5. Beyond the Text (HOTS Question):
Radio is a popular means of mass communication in India. It can even reach the people of
rural India where other means of communication cannot reach. Since, major population of
India lives in rural regions, radio would help create awareness about polio in those regions
also.
