MOTHER’S CHOICE…. What’s important is how mothers choose to feed their babies, it is a personal choice, it’s what feels most comfortable to the mother. If mother is happy, there's a good chance baby will be happy too! Ultimately, it’s a mothers right to choose freely to breast or bottle feed.

WATCH AND GET READY TO RELAY SOME FACTS? Watch the video ‘benefits of breast feeding’ note down as many benefits as you can:

Page 10: Session 1 5.2 breast & bottle

Advantages- how breast feeding nourishes babies• Breast milk is free•It helps to develop a bond between mother and baby•It helps the mothers uterus to contract back to the original shape•It uses up to 200 – 500 calories a day•No preparation needed•Contains exact nutrients for the baby.•The milk contains antibodies•Milk is the right temperature

Page 11: Session 1 5.2 breast & bottle

Factors affecting breast feeding•Babies can take a while to latch on to the nipple properly•Nipples can get chapped and sore•If the breast is very full of milk, it is difficult for the baby to suck•It is hard for the mother to

know how much milk the baby is consuming•The breast milk can leak leaving the mother feeling uncomfortable.

Hygienic practice surrounding formula feedingYour baby’s immune system is not strong or very well developed.

Therefore babies are much more prone to illness and infection. This means that good hygiene is very important when making up a bottle (formula)

What are some hygienic practices you should do?

Page 15: Session 1 5.2 breast & bottle

Bottled water is not recommended for making up feeds, as it's not sterile and may contain too much salt (sodium) or sulphate.

Make up feeds one at a time, as your baby needs them.

Use freshly boiled drinking water from the tap to make up a feed. Don’t use water that has been boiled before.

Leave the water to cool in the kettle for no more than 30 minutes. This will ensure it stays at a temperature of at least 70C. Water at this temperature will kill any harmful bacteria.

Remember to let the feed cool a little more before you give it to your baby.
