IS1103 L01 –  Ubiquity

Exercise

Consider the following argument about technology development and use: “Technologies

develop independent of society and social forces  –   their development follows scientific

discoveries, and one development generally builds upon the previous one, like an

‘evolution of technology’. Technologies are created by inventors and engineers, all that

matters are the materials and processes that they are dealing with.

When technologies are adopted and used by society, they change the character of that

society. They change the social arrangements and patterns of social behavior. Forexample, when a country adopts the Internet, it is a matter of time before democracy will

become prevalent in that society. Individuals will have access to the information on the

Internet and will want democratic social institutions. Technology will determine the

 social structure of the country.”

To what extent do you agree with this view of technology development and use?
