F or nearly two years, the Board of Trustees of the Westhampton Free Library has researched numerous issues associated with how the current library building serves the needs of our community. Local residents have worked with a variety of industry professionals to help define the future of our facility, notably through goal setting and design ‘charrettes’ that drive consensus for what will best meet current and projected needs. “It has been a combination of data- gathering, education, and a reaffirmation of what the library means to the commu- nity,” said Board of Trustees President Esther Glazer. “We’ve studied how the library is used, how it will be used in the future, and what the options are to create the next generation of library services in our community.” This data gathering has resulted in the completion of a ‘library program,’ which was assembled by Aaron Cohen Associates of Croton-on-Hudson, NY. The firm supports library projects through programming and schematic design – simply put, they analyze services and space to develop alternatives for facility use or new construction. Each area of the library is studied and projections are made for right-sizing space through creation of a master plan that allows the Trustees and architect the ability to consider renovation, reorganization, or new facility construction. Pansy Cheng, the architect of record for the library of Ward Associates of Bohemia, has undertaken the process of translating the master plan into a working schematic of a new library for the existing site. She is joined in her work by profes- sionals from the 7Group, specialists in sustainable design, also known as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building design. This agency worked on the new Westhampton Beach Village Hall to design features that allowed it to be LEED-rated. “Like the Village Hall team, our Trustees strongly believe in sustainable design,” said Library Director Matt Bollerman. “What it simply means is that the process- es and products used to construct the new facility will work together to increase the efficiency of the building and, over time, lower our overall costs.” Upcoming steps in the process include an unveiling of the proposed schematic and rendering, which should take place over the next several months. Ultimately, the Board will make a decision to move ahead and ask the community for support through a public referendum, perhaps before the end of this year. The Board will be eager to hear communi- ty feedback to this conceptual proposal, thereby continuing the ongoing dialogue about the library’s future.
