• Spectrum of skills and challenges
• “Disjointed” communication skills
• Slowed Processing Speed
• Challenges Reading Between the Lines
• Unique Sensory Needs
• Little to no Sex Education
Strategies:
• Presume competence
• Use different modalities (spoken, written, pictures, videos, etc.)
• Allow time!
• Be straight forward
• Try to meet sensory needs
• “Work with me not on me”
*Full Training available upon
request
DD Accommodations for Online Support • Be clear on your purpose
• Allow time to adjust to the new platform
• Have a plan for keeping or regaining attention
• Be prepared to demonstrate (show rather than tell)
• Check for understanding
NOTE: Privacy for people with
DD is always challenged, but especially during
COVID. Caregivers often struggle to step away. Folks won’t be as open
when others are in earshot.
Additional COVID-19 Concerns
• Increased risk of exposure due to dependence on caregivers
– Decreased access to medical care (even before COVID-19)
• Epidemic of Isolation
• Increased Risk for Abuse
The Arc has a “Phone Buddy” program for
people with disabilities to have someone to
talk to during COVID-19!

Question for the Panel
Question for the Panel
How do you protect confidentiality and privacy,
when you are providing mental health care and
support groups?
Question for the Panel
How have you approached relationship-building
initially with new clients or community members
during the pandemic, when in-person meetings are
not an option?
Question for the Panel
How do current virtual services align (or fall short)
with what the disability community has been
requesting for years (i.e. better accessibility and
universal design)?
Have you seen successful examples or helpful
resources to better serve the disability community?
Question for the Panel
What are best practices for working with
interpreters, and engaging with folks who speak a
different language than the provider?
Question for the Panel
What kind of feedback have you received from
people you serve about how virtual services are
working for them?
Question for the Panel
For those who started providing virtual services
more recently, do you plan to continue to offer
these services, even when restrictions on meeting
in person are lifted?
Other Questions for the Panel?
