WELCOME THE COMMUNITY

Dear Parishioners, The season of Advent has a two-fold character. It is a time of preparation for the Solemnity of Christmas, in which the First Coming of the Son of God to humanity is remembered, and likewise a time when, by remembrance of this, minds and hearts are led to look forward to Christ’s Second Coming at the end of time. For these two reasons, Advent is a period of devout and expectant light. (Universal norms of the Liturgical Year: the Roman Missal, 2011, p.93) The beginning of our liturgical year clashes with our secular culture, which is already ushering in the “Christmas season” with holiday themes, songs, lights, and trees. Conversely, the four weeks of Advent are not about celebrating what is on its way, but preparing with prayerful vigil the anniversary of Christ’s birth and His 2nd Coming. In short, Advent is a season of practicing how to wait with patience. We are not waiting for Christmas, but for the 2nd coming. Our patient waiting will be rewarded. Both Jeremiah and Luke speak of times to come that will affirm the Jews fidelity to God. Jeremiah was making reference to the Jews of his day returning from a long 50 year exile in Babylon back to their country to re-establish roots in Israel. Luke was recalling Jesus’ prediction of the destruction of the Jewish temple by the Romans, which was the visible seat of God, and the tumult that would follow, but the faithful Jews would prevail. Ironically, the Christmas season only begins on Christmas Eve and lasts through the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord (December 24—January 13, 2019). It is a bit sad to see Christmas trees discarded within the first several days following Christmas because it begs the question, ‘What was all the hype about?’ Advent’s fulfillment lies in the afterglow of what Christ’s birth (Incarnation) means for us and for the world throughout time—hope for a future in which the God Man is very present now and forever.

***************

I would like to offer special thanks to Linda Armentano, Kathy Lambert, Nancy Crowley, Laurie Inserra, Lisa Rauschmayer, Jeannine Leichner, Nancy Reid, Linda Heinlein, and Toni Araldi for their efforts in organizing and hosting the reception following the 53rd Interfaith Thanksgiving Service, sponsored by the Saratoga Ministerial Association, which took place in our parish church on Thanksgiving Day. More than 275 people were in attendance. I am also very grateful to Lucia Hong, our director of music and choir; and Michael Wright, our liturgist, for their direct leadership to make the service so prayerful. Continued on next page...

Advent Bible Study Bible Study will resume starting Nov. 27. For Advent, we will look at the foretelling of Jesus’ coming and second coming, as described in the prophetic

books and the Revelation of John, making connections between prophetic imagery and that used in Revelation. We will gather in the Parish Center on Tuesdays (11/27, 12/4, 12/11, and 12/18); there will be a morning option (9:00-10:15 AM) and an evening one (7:00-8:15 PM.).

Advent Giving Tree The Advent Giving Tree will be decorated with Christmas gift requests for (1) Casa de Clara, a Dorothy Day Catholic Worker Home; (2) Sacred Heart Community Services (SHCS), an outreach program for the poor, and (3) the “Safe Car Park” participants.

For Casa de Clara, blue star ornaments, we are asking for both personal items and gift cards for the women and their children who are residing at the Catholic Worker home in downtown San Jose. On each blue star is the recipient’s first name and age. Please attach the blue star to the gift. Gifts do not need to be wrapped.

For the SHCS, gold & silver ornaments, we are asking for gifts that are generic in nature and should not be wrapped. The gold star ornaments address the pressing winter needs of the SHCS program, namely diapers, infant formula, jackets/coats, sleeping bags, and pop-top canned food items. The silver star ornaments request Christmas gifts for people of all ages whom SHCS serves. Some silver star ornaments are also requests for gift cards.

For the “Safe Car Park”, red star ornaments, we are asking for a gas gift card for the participants.

Please bring all gifts to Mass on the weekends of December 9th, & 16th.

Share Your Faith with Someone! Do you know someone who might be interested in exploring the Catholic faith? Or someone who has never been confirmed or who would like to prepare to receive the Eucharist? If so, why not invite them to find out more about becoming Catholic or preparing for sacraments by contacting Jeannine Leichner, RCIA Coordinator at [email protected] or (408) 867-3634, x505. Sacred Heart warmly welcomes all who are seeking to know more about our Catholic faith and offers a wonderful process of discovery and spiritual growth in the RCIA. It’s a great place to make new friends, too!

Letter of Support for Catholic High School in Morgan Hill

A committed group of people within the Diocese have been working for over twenty years to build a co-ed Catholic High School that serves the southern part of Santa Clara County. On December 5th, a County Commission (Local Agency Formation Commission - LAFCO) will make a critical decision that will impact our ability to move forward. It is very important that the Commissioners understand that there is a lot of support for the school and their letters will be very helpful. Please go to www.SouthCountyCHS.org, which has additional information and an easy template to contact the LAFCO Commissioners and request their support. For more info, please email: [email protected]

ADVENT CANDLES & CANDLEHOLDERS $5 each will be available this weekend after all Masses. Supplies are limited. Contact Evelyn Longo in the Faith Formation office at [email protected]

GROW OUR CATHOLIC FAITH

F.I.R.E. Speaker Series December 9, 2018

10:15 AM Parish Center “The Role of FOCUS in College Campus Ministry”

Speaker: Nicholas Brown Representative from FOCUS

(Fellowship of Catholic University Students) FOCUS is a campus outreach that pursues college students with intentionality and love. FOCUS in-vites students into a growing relationship with Jesus and the Catholic faith, inspiring and equipping them for a lifetime of Christ-centered evangelization, dis-cipleship and friendships in which they lead others to do the same.

This weekend we welcome our December guests to the Rotating Safe Car Park. We are grateful to the leaders in the Saratoga Interfaith community who have advocated with the city of Saratoga for this program. Peter Boulton, from Sacred Heart, has taken lead on this project on our behalf. Peter has a wonderful attention to details and great openness to this emerging ministry.

There are opportunities to be a part of this team. Cooking a meal to be served at the parish center. To date we have 3 groups signed up to host a meal. If you

would like to consider putting together a small group to cook and host an evening, please let us know. Please consider that an average group size to feed for dinner will be about 12 guests. We can provide recommendations for meals and recipes, if helpful.

Check-in/Hospitality - Each night we will offer light snacks for guests. We will need two (2) team members to help with check-in and offer the hospitality. (8:30—10:00 PM) A short training will be provided for the check-in process. However, Sacred Heart is well known for their gracious hospitality.

Please visit our Sacred Heart website to stay abreast of latest activities. You can find frequently asked questions (FAQs) and a link to the ivolunteer site from the Social Justice page, located in the Act as Christians in the World ministry page. If you do not have access to a computer, but would like to help, please call the office. We can assist with the sign up.

Thank you for your outpouring of support for this opportunity.
