Sharpen your skills and advance your career.

“Help Smokey Prevent Wildfires!” Since 1944, Smokey Bear has been vigilant in delivering his fire prevention message to each new generation. Young and old need to hear Smokey’s message, “Remember, only YOU can prevent wildfires!”

Smokey Bear, our nation’s symbol of wildfire prevention, has been raising public awareness about the need to prevent accidental, human-caused wildfires for 67 years! We must all be careful when burning garbage, starting matches, and putting out campfires.

The North Dakota Forest Service supports the work of Smokey Bear by making fire prevention educational materials available to all second grade students for Fire Prevention Week in October. If you are a second grade teacher and have not received a letter to order Smokey Bear materials for your class, contact: [email protected] or call (701) 228-5446.

K-4 Teachers: Enroll your class in the Smokey Bear and Living with Fire IVN class through EduTech in October, and learn about the fire triangle and how eliminating

one or more elements helps control wildfires.

    How can I get involved?

To learn more about Poetry Out Loud or to register for materials contact: Rebecca Engelman

North Dakota Council on the Arts 1600 E. Century Ave., Suite 6, Bismarck, ND 58503 Telephone: 701-328-7593 Email: [email protected]

What is Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest?

Poetry Out Loud was created by the National Endowment for the Arts and The Poetry Foundation and is administered in partnership with the North Dakota Council

on the Arts to encourage our nation’s youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and performance. By encouraging high school students in grades nine through twelve to memorize and perform great poems, this exciting program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage.

Who participates in Poetry Out Loud?

Thousands of high school students in grades nine through twelve from across the nation participated in Poetry Out Loud this past year. The competition begins at the classroom level, with winners advancing to a school-wide competition, then to State Finals at the North Dakota Heritage Center in Bismarck, ND on March 15, 2011. One student from each state competes at the National Finals in Washington DC in April 27-29, 2011, where $50,000 dollars in scholarships and school prizes will be awarded.

What resources are available to help you with Poetry Out Loud?

The NEA and the Poetry Foundation provide free curriculum materials for use by participating schools. These materials include print and online anthologies containing more than 400 classic and contemporary poems; a website (www.poetryoutloud.org); a teacher’s guide to help instructors teach recitation and performance; a best performances DVD/companion guide, and a CD featuring well-known actors and writers such as Anthony Hopkins, James Earl Jones, Alysso Milano, David Schwimmer, and N. Scott Momaday.

The MSU Graduate School offers nine master’s degrees and one education specialist degree.

Courses are available on campus, online, over IVN, and at other North Dakota locations.

The Master of Education degree offers 13 distinct concentrations as well as the option for a student to self-design a concentration to meet his/her classroom needs. The Master of Science in Special Education offers five concentrations, including Deaf Education and Developmental Disabilities/Autism Spectrum Disorders. For more focused discipline specific programming, students may select from the Master of Music Education

(MME), a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Mathematics or Science, the Educational Specialist degree in School Psychology, or Master of Science degrees in Management, Information Systems, or Criminal Justice.

The required capstone experience varies from completing a capstone course, an action research project, a recital, an artistic exhibition, a thesis, or written and oral comprehensive exams. Most programs provide students a choice for their final experience.

Several programs are state or federal grant supported, providing admitted students a range of financial support for their education. Additionally, MSU offers all students, regardless of residency, a low tuition rate of $301.79 per credit for campus classes and $307.94 per credit for online, IVN, and other locations.
