Important! Upcoming Changes at the Club

We are always striving to improve your membership experience at Harbor Square Athletic Club. Continuous upgrades to our facilities and services, taking us from “Good” to “Best”, are a top priority, therefore increasing the value you receive as a member. We would like to take this opportunity to inform you that we have commenced on our latest renovation project.

Our membership has grown immensely and the fitness industry continues to evolve. To keep Harbor Square relevant, on the cutting edge, and providing our members with the best and most innovative equipment, we are expanding the downstairs functional training space into Court 8. While we regret that our allocated space will result in the omission of this tennis court, we hope that the addition and improvement of several amenities will result in a paramount fitness experience. These improvements include the continuation of our current functional training space, additional fitness equipment, a multi purpose space suitable for basketball, group fitness classes, pickleball, volleyball, and much more! We are excited to bring you new, state of the art equipment and more space to safely work out.

We understand the omission of court 8 is a loss to our current tennis members. However, we hope the advantages of the space will prove to be an added value to your athletic experience. The USTA recommends 85-100 members per playable court. Our tennis membership base is currently under the USTA recommendation with 667 members. In order to keep a healthy ratio of players to courts, we have also made the decision to restrict new tennis memberships and will waitlist this option.

The partnering phase of our renovations will be to completely transform our smoothie bar and to update our lobby. This will be the first renovation to our smoothie bar in over 25 years! We are excited to bring a new and fresh look to compliment our new, fresh menu and products.

All efforts will be made to keep the construction disturbance to the very minimum, but would like to apologize in advance for any inconvenience it may cause. You can expect to see the work begin in November and continue into the Winter.

Thank you for your understanding, patience, and patronage during this time of progress. We look forward to bringing you an even better club as we move forward in fitness together.

Sincerely,The Team at Harbor Square Athletic Club

Health Coach’s Corner

The holiday season is in full affect, especially at Costco, with Christmas decorations already being sold! Where did the time go? We have had some amazing results with our Balanced Habits 28 day Kick Starters this past month! Those that really embraced the program have found a new balance with food that they can carry on throughout this holiday season. If you didn’t get the opportunity to do Kick Start, don’t worry! You always have the opportunity to sign up for our Life program. Our “Lifers” are getting real, life changing results! The “Life” program is founded on the same principle of balanced eating with weekly one on one help from a supportive food coach. So, let’s think about how you want to ring in the New Year. Why not step into the New Year feeling your best, with confidence, instead of waiting for it? Life is short and there is no guarantee for tomorrow. Start today and let us help you navigate the holidays. There is NOTHING off limits with this lifestyle plan, but ways to achieve balance.Listen to what some of our participants have to say about their experience with Balanced Habits!

”I am going through a particularly busy time in my life and Balanced Habits was pretty easy to follow. I lost 3” around my waist and I feel so much better!” -Mary W.

”I like Balanced Habits because I find the program simple and easy to adapt to my personal tastes. There is literally nothing that I am forbidden to eat, as long as I incorporate it into a meal and not go crazy with the portions. After a few months I have found my energy level to be higher and more consistent and that makes it a lot easier to stay on the program. Finally, I cannot argue with the results. I have consistently lost weight over the last few months and I have no reason to believe that I won’t continue to do so and ultimately attain my long term goals!” -Mark R.

Attitude of Gratitude

It’s that time of year. Thanksgiving is upon us and that means our social media feeds are filling up with gratitude posts. Have you seen these? Maybe you have done one yourself! For the month of November, each day a post is shared on Facebook or Instagram featuring something you are thankful for. This is actually a really great practice and can lead to experiencing more joy in your life (or at least for the month of November).

Brene Brown, PhD LMSW, is a research professor at the University of Houston and has spent the past two decades studying courage, vulnerability, shame, and empathy. In her research, she found the people who could best experience joy shared a common variable: gratitude.

“The people who could really lean into joy, they didn’t dress rehearse tragedy, they didn’t practice the terrible things, they just leaned in,” Brown says. “They practiced gratitude.”

To give some context to her quote, Brene had prefaced this statement asking her audience how many of them think of the worst case scenarios, the “what ifs”. Many times, we recognize that we are indeed blessed. Life is good. Is it too good? What is about to happen? These thoughts and fears rob us of our joy and prevent us from experiencing our lives to the fullest. However, if we are able to simply recognize the positive things, acknowledge what we have been given and be thankful for it, our perspective changes. Our fears will be drowned out by gratitude and we will be able to relish in the good things, no matter how big or small they are.

We encourage you to practice the Attitude of Gratitude this month. You don’t have to share it on social media or share it at all. Keep a small journal, noting what you are thankful for each day. You can pick one thing or list a whole page! Give it a try and see how your perspective has changed by November 30th. We will give you a little boost. Here are some of the things we are thankful for here at HSAC:

“I am grateful for our wonderful members and co-workers! Every day is full of smiles, sweat, laughs, and just nice people.”

- Greg Boland, Membership Director

“I am grateful for my two beautiful daughters. They inspire me every day to be strong and confident and to set a great example for them!”

Trainer Tip: Basic Kettlebell Swing

Have you ever tried a kettlebell swing?

With benefits such as increased muscle strength, cardiovascular training, and increased lung efficiency, Kettlebell swings help you build your physical endurance. Personal trainer, Drew Clark, holds a kettlebell certification. She shares the basics of a kettlebell swing in 3 steps:

STEP 1:

In starting position have your feet shoulder width apart, core engaged, and knees softly bent. You want the kettlebell positioned to where you are making a triangle with your feet and the bell.

STEP 2:

Hike the bell up into the groin area. Your wrists should touch high up in your inner thigh. Keep your core engaged through the entire movement and weight towards your heels.

STEP 3:

From step 2, thrust your hips forward into a standing position. At the top of your swing, you should be in a standing plank, elbows locked, glutes and quads contracted. You then hinge at your hips and go back into step 2 position. Continuously perform step 2 and 3. When done, return to your starting position.
