to say the least! I love the way it all came together - everyone bringing what they desired and enjoying the beauty of Easter Day, the joys of spring, and the fel-lowship. The whole setting was beautiful - a beautiful staging of beautiful food by beautiful people celebrating the beautiful Savior through whom we have life everlast-ing and through whom death is defeated! Joy was on every face - adults and children, alike, who enjoyed a fabulous Easter egg hunt arranged by Becky & Walt Chidsey, Tif-fany Benitone, her boy-friend Kit, Lorraine Johnson

and Jay & Will Sanders. Much time was spent prep-ping the eggs and readying them for hiding. No act of love or service went unno-ticed. Truly this was an amazing Easter Day and celebration! Thanks to each and every one of you from the bottom of my heart! And, we continue cele-brating Easter for several more weeks! Love always, Barry+

A Special Opportunity

It’s a pleasure to again serve on the vestry and resume former duties as your junior warden this year. In doing so, I’m taking over from Kathy McGee, who does everything well, but whose heart prefers parish life, and whose arms are somehow long enough to embrace us all. My own job is less warm and fuzzy, keeping the Lord’s house up and running at 307 Harbor Drive.

As we tell you each year at annual parish meetings, it’s tricky. Big facility, small congrega-tion. The snowbirds are apt not to realize how small, since they hugely inflate our numbers during the season. That’s why I asked them to stand one Sunday. The few that remained seated were our year-round members.

We’ve had our work cut out for us since the split. We’ve come a very long way. We’ve been able to continue paying off the ed building note, and now have less than two years to go on that.

We’ve been able to hire a priest. We’ve been lucky to have a wonderful tenant for the ed building, Coastline Calvary Chapel. We’ve been able to lease out our back parking lot, and we’ve had wonderful success with community fund-raising events.

Now it’s up to us to step up again ourselves, because we’ve been given a special opportuni-ty.

We have 13 air conditioners at St. Andrew’s, not including a like number at the ed building.

Some of them are over 30 years old. They operate in high summer temps and humidity, on the

wings of salt air. They’ve been good to us, but they’re failing. The week of March 15, three of

them went out. We’d anticipated that one would and we replaced that parlor unit for $6,800,

which was $800 over budget, and we already had a deficit budget. Four days later, both sanctu-

ary nave units failed. One was restored to service at nominal cost. Then came the rub. The oth-

er required complete replacement at near $12,600. There was no way our budget could stand

that.

The vestry met in special session this month to determine what to do, and decided to dig deeply into our precious reserves, but to simultaneously appeal to the congregation to re-plenish our now desperately low capital improvement fund. That fund is money set aside for major problems such as air conditioner replacement, hurricane damage, and the like. The sen-ior warden made the first selfless contribution as an example to us, and intends to keep contrib-uting to it. It’s now important that all of us look into our hearts and wallets.

As Senior Warden Rick announced, we’re looking for a minimum of $15,000 for the capital improvement fund. Please earmark your checks accordingly. For those of us who are 70½ and obligated to take IRA required minimum distributions, this is an excellent tax-advantaged donation. For further information about that, call me at 687-7394. I’m doing that myself.

This is important. We need you now. It’s a special opportunity.

During seminary Fr. Barry

spent time visiting the Chatta-

nooga Church Ministries that

runs, among other things, a

foot ministry. The homeless

spend an incredible amount of

time walking and their feet

suffer from it. Brother Ron

Fender, an Episcopal Monk,

started washing the feet of the

homeless as an act of compas-

sion that also has medical ben-

efits. After hearing his story,

Nancy Skinner organized a

Maundy Thursday shoe drive

to benefit Brother Ron’s minis-

try. All shoes, socks and foot

lotions collected during Holy

Week will be sent to Chatta-

nooga after Easter Sunday.

Two months into the position and we have come to a very taxing and stressful situation con-

cerning our finances. Our facilities our aging and not too gracefully in the air conditioners.

One of our largest units failed and nothing short of replacing it totally was going to work. Our

Junior Warden, Tom Hanlin, came up with some options but after a special vestry meeting on

31 March it was decided the best option was to replace. This is a very costly expense which

has totaled over $12,000 dollars. To this end we decided to start a Capital Improvement Drive

with a minimum goal of raising $15,000. As I stated on Easter Sunday, I put forth the first

check towards this goal and I will continue to give each month to the drive. Please join me in

helping us reach this goal. If anyone has any ideas on fund raising options please bring them to

the attention of any vestry member or myself or the junior warden. Please earmark checks to-

wards the drive with Capital Improvement noted in the lower left corner of your check, or if

giving cash, put it in an envelope marked for Capital Improvement.

Again it is an extreme honor to be your Senior Warden and I hope and pray that we have a

wonderful year.

Donated shoes that will be sent to the Chattanooga Church Ministries to help the homeless.

JUBILEE MINISTRY!JUBILEE MINISTRY!JUBILEE MINISTRY!JUBILEE MINISTRY!

I am delighted to share with you that St. Andrew's By-the-Sea has been designated and certified as a Jubilee Ministry. To my knowledge, we are the first parish within the diocese with such a designation. I hope we are not the last. With that said, we may and can be a resource to others in our diocese and in Province IV as we seek to lead and to live into our Baptismal Covenant and seek to see and serve Jesus Christ in others. Jubilee Ministries focus on social justice and advocate for the poor and the oppressed. St. Andrew's By-the-Sea has, for many years, ministered to the homeless. In the last sixteen months, however, ministries to the homeless and to those in need have expanded exponentially through the Blue Door Ministry. The food pantry, the clothes closet, and the shower ministry are now open Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. The bicycle ministry continues to grow (just look in the parish hall as Walt is pre-paring for the summer), providing more and more bikes to those in the Destin area who have no other means of transportation to work or to apply for jobs and to the J1A stu-dents each summer when they come to work at the beach during the summer break. Many of these students come from Europe and from Asia. St. Andrew's touches people thousands of miles away by touching them when they are with us and among us. Hot nutritious lunches are now served on Monday and Thursday each week in the parish hall. Ecumenical partnerships have been solidified with other churches in the area and part-nerships with other agencies have been formed to serve better the population in need. Numerous volunteers from our parish, from the community, and from other parishes join hands and serve side by side to feed, clothe, and help the needy as we are able. I want to thank Carrie Nagrani, vestry person with oversight of the social justice min-istries at St. Andrew's By-the-Sea, for her leadership in expanding these ministries, her leadership in establishing the many partnerships, and in achieving Jubilee Ministry sta-tus. In addition to Carrie, many thanks go to each and every one of the people who work and volunteer their time in the many facets of the outreach ministries in any manner, to the agencies which provide food, to the grocery stores which provide bread and confec-tions, to the other churches in the area which support the work here, to all who support the efforts financially, and to all who hold these ministries in prayer. This work is hard work, but it is also rewarding work! May we be mindful of the words of our Lord in Matthew 25:40. "Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me." Barry+
