The Doppler Effect results from a shift in the frequency of the sound waves.
A commonly used example is a train. When the train is approaching, the whistle has a higher pitch than normal. You can hear the change in pitch as the train passes.

Birth and Death of Stars
For the 15th anniversary, scientists used the ACS to record a new region of the eerie-looking Eagle Nebula. The Eagle Nebula image reveals a tall, dense tower of gas being sculpted by ultraviolet light from a group of massive, hot stars.

At maximum luminosity, V838 Mon was some 600,000 times brighter than the Sun. Nevertheless, the star remained surprisingly cool throughout the outburst, unlike any previous recognized type of Nova.

Using highly luminous Type Ia supernovae as standard candles, the expansion of the universe has been measured to great distances, with the remarkable result that the expansion of the universe is actually accelerating – implying the existence of a mysterious dark energy that requires new physics to explain.

Massive Black Holes
• Another key goal of HST: use its unprecedented angular resolution to measure the motions of stars in the nuclei of galaxies and clusters, to prove the presence of black holes and to measure their mass.
• Fascinating correlation between black hole and system mass discovered – clue to formation mechanisms.

Hubble Reveals Source of Blue Light in Andromeda
Astronomers using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope have been able to determine the source of a mysterious blue light that surrounds a massive black hole near the core of the Andromeda galaxy, NASA announced Sept. 20.
The blue light is coming from a disk of hot, young stars that are circling the super-massive black hole in much the same way planets revolve around the Sun in the solar system. Astronomers are not completely certain, however, how stars are formed so close to a giant black hole without being torn apart by its gravitational forces.
When astronomers first discovered the blue light near Andromeda's core using Hubble in 1995, they thought it might come from a bright blue star or exotic energetic process. But new observations using Hubble's Imaging Spectrograph reveal that the light consists of nearly 400 stars that formed about 200 million years ago. They are packed into a disk about 1 light year across.

The Next Servicing Mission Will Maintain This Pattern of Discovery
Two exciting new scientific instruments: Wide Field Camera 3 and the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph.
WFC3: unprecedented imaging capability in the near-IR and near-UV, ideal for continuing the assault on the dark energy problem and studying the history of star formation in galaxies.COS: unprecedented UV
spectroscopic capability, ideal for studying the properties and evolution of the intergalactic medium. Who can say what unexpected
discoveries await?

One Example of Socio-Economic Benefits
Digital imaging technology from HST’s next-generation instrument, the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS), was adapted to a new, non-surgical breast biopsy technique two years before STIS was installed on HST.
This technique saves patients time, pain, scarring, radiation exposure, and money.

Many believe that computer-assisted technology will propel minimally invasive surgery forward and is expected to revolutionize within five years the way health care is delivered.
Surgeons used a robot in an intricate laparoscopic procedure on an infant.
