She asked her to get the toothpaste and squeeze some of it out of the tube and put it on a plate. Then she requested that her daughter put the toothpaste back into the tube….Of course, she could not accomplish this task. The mother explained that the toothpaste was like our words – once they have left our mouth we cannot stuff them back in. We can all use our words to heal, encourage, inspire and convey love to others. These expressions of emotion can wrap themselves around the receiver to deliver positive and helpful feelings. Occasionally we might make a poor choice and allow our words to hurt, demoralize or sadden another person. Just like the toothpaste on the plate, however, once the words are spoken aloud we can’t take them back. The damage and pain that they can cause interferes with our relationships, wounding the trust and security necessary for honest connections. Spilled toothpaste doesn’t just happen through our words. It also oozes out through our facial expressions and gestures. You can’t take back how you made someone feel when you rolled your eyes after a new comer to the center asked if they could take the seat next to you. Additionally, we cannot take back the sadness that was caused with that loud and full body sigh you let out when your daughter tried to explain that she simply did not have the time to take you shopping this week because of the demands in her life. As we travel through these steamy hot days of summer, let us each be mindful of the message that our words and body language deliver to others. That spilled toothpaste can also help us spread love and happiness. A sincere word of thanks to your meal deliverer for the daily hot meal, or a quick hug of appreciation for your son when he listened to your story about a new challenge you are facing….they make a world of difference. With awareness we can pay attention to the conversations we engage in and try to observe our expression of thoughts, ideas and feelings. May we use our words and mannerisms to convey lovingkindness and allow ourselves to feel the uplifting sense of peace and comfort that this sharing brings. With Love, Marian AUGUST 2017 NEWSLETTER

♡ SPEAKING FROM THE HEART ♡

Recently on a beautiful summer’s afternoon, a young mother was talking with her daughter. She asked her to get the toothpaste and squeeze some of it out of the tube and put it on a plate. Then she requested that her daughter put the toothpaste back into the tube….Of course, she could not accomplish this task. Director’s Message Hello All Members! August has arrived, and the fall is quickly approaching. I hope that everyone has been enjoying their summer so far, and that you will continue to do so during the month of August. I have been noticing a lot of new faces in the center and so ecstatic to see our membership grow. And with the increased members, I am looking forward to SNAP’s Annual Luau. I want to see more grass skirts and Hawaiian attire this year! Let’s end the summer with a great party and have lots of laughs. We have some exciting events this month, such as a new computer class on tablets, new exciting trips including overnight stays and theater productions! We have also added a monthly trip to Yonkers every last Wednesday. I would like to thank our interns from the Summer Youth Program, that spent a few weeks with us and helped out the center with various duties. They were a great help and it is always nice to have some young faces in the crowd. And of course, our college intern from Pace, Anisa – THANK YOU for all your help with the center and the seniors! As always, thank you all for your input and participation!

All the Best,

Nina!

At the meeting held on July 17th, we concentrated on ways to increase membership at the center. I know it is summertime but since SNAP is a cooling center, more seniors should be taking advantage of that convenience. When SNAP offers parties or Breakfast with Friends, we manage to fill seats but not many people hang around for the wonderful classes we offer. Let your friends and neighbors know about the center and try to encourage them to drop by and stay. Attitude is so important also. When a new member does stop in, welcome them. Don't insist on them going to another table because this one is "yours". There are no permanent tables or chairs except Table 3. That is a "working table" and held for the volunteers who handle lunch choices as well as Rochelle, Nina or Anissa who oversee volunteers. It is embarrassing to those on the board to constantly remind members of the rules of the dining room. We are all here for a pleasant experience not a battle so, lighten up. If someone is at "your table" or in "your seat" sit somewhere else. Your friends will be there for you and more than likely move with you for the day. Offer to introduce new members to the classes you attend. They will either say yes or no thank you but at least they will feel welcome. We are still looking for clothing donations since the boutique had to be restocked after the recent flooding experience. Also, cotton material, yarn and jewelry items you no longer need would be welcomed. Please see Judy with material, Ruth with yarn and Andrea or Carole with jewelry items. Nina or Anisa are also willing to accept them for us and will see that we receive them. Thank you for keeping SNAP in your thoughts. We are a second family at the center and most of us care about others. Share your thoughts, ideas and company, it will be appreciated. These are our golden years, let's try to make them platinum. Two new board members will be announced in late August we wish all of our nominees’ good luck. The monthly bulletin is a source of information for all members we hope the information we provide is useful to everyone.

Thank you all Carole Vahey, President

PLEASE REMEMBER SNAP IN YOUR WILL OR TRUST

There are many ways to give to charity and good causes. Bequests can serve as a memorial to honor the memory of a loved one, or establish a fund for a particular aspect of SNAP. Bequests are often a final communication one has with descendants, a way of demonstrating your values and setting an example for your heirs. A planned gift or bequest to SNAP helps you to determine your legacy in a truly meaningful way and have a profound impact on the future of the organization. Please remember SNAP so that we can continue to provide important services to others in our community. If you have any questions, you may call Ronald J. Schwartz, Elder Law Attorney at (718) 347-6100.
