♡ SPEAKING FROM THE HEART ♡

As summer surrounds us with joyful sunshine and warm fresh air, Mother Nature is busy giving birth to a new generation of plant and animal life. Amidst the strong sturdy leaves of house plants and garden blossoms, fragile green shoots of new live are boldly announcing their arrival. Baby birds and ducks greet the tender sunshine as they prepare to explore their new and beckoning world. Vegetables emerge from flower beds to grow under the careful watch of the nurturing neighborhood gardener. This is a time for uncurling and discovery. Age does not preclude the opportunity for active engagement, but rather offers a wide perspective from which to wisely choose. The lesson for us is that the taking of even small steps into unexplored territory is a commitment to a life of connection and relationships.

Living is a gradual process of discovery, learning, growth and enrichment – slowly, sometimes painfully slow, moving us from one stage of development to another more advanced level. How wonderful to reach senior adulthood and realize that you continue to have the capacity to gain new knowledge, insight and understandings about yourself and the world around you. How remarkable to move ahead to revitalize, reenergize and possibly even reinvent yourself in new and previously unimagined ways. The quiet woman who came to SNAP alone and unsure about what to expect, but determined to end her isolation and loneliness, is blossoming with the strength of renewed self-worth. The grandfather who uncovers love in the infectious laughter and non-stop chatter of his young granddaughter is opening his heart to trust and affection, when he thought that only hurt and pain would take up residence in his broken heart. All things are possible when the mind and heart are ready and willing to embrace the dreams and realities of daily life.

We all have roots through which we obtain sustenance to fortify our own diverse expressions of individuality. Yet, we all require a warmth and lovingkindness that is open, accepting and embracing so as to enable us to seek new opportunities.

During this hot month of July, take a slow close look at yourself with the eyes of a gentle heart; and don’t be surprised when you recognize the soul of a beautiful person. Allow the golden prospects of each new day to give clarity, form and structure to the wisdom of your years as you reach out toward tomorrow. May joy, laughter, and heartfelt connection flow through you allowing for a vision that paints a landscape full of bright color and texture, and may you experience the love of a life well lived.

With Love, Marian

DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

Welcome to SUMMER! It officially has been two years since I first began working with SNAP, and each day is as exciting, if not more, than the last. Over the years, I have learned an abundance about myself, as well as all of you. Thank you for making my time here remarkable! As the weather improves, new opportunities to embrace the outdoors arise. I encourage you to take some extra time during your day to enjoy the beautiful weather and all that it has to offer. Research shows that engaging in outside activities helps lift your spirits and increase Vitamin D intake. This month especially, is filled with holidays to better assist you with being involved outdoors. From National Picnic Day to National Ice Cream and Hot dog Day! Furthermore, as always we will have our July 4th Celebration BBQ. This year it will be held on Monday, July 3rd. We are closed Tuesday, July 4th. Additionally, this Fourth of July marks the 241st annual celebration of the United States Declaration of Independence. Across the United States, families and friends gather with picnics, barbecues, parades, and of course fireworks. Regardless of how you choose to spend your Independence Day, do it with the ones you love in a positive environment!

All the Best, Nina!

A Message from the Advisory Board

At the meeting held today, we spoke about the flood that occurred and the classes that were cancelled for a period of time. We are happy everything is back to business as usual. There are two seats open on the board and anyone interested can get a petition from Nina. Sixteen signatures of members in good standing is needed to complete the petition. Please have it back to Nina by August 1st. The decision will be made at the August 21st board meeting. Those selected will be seated on the board at the September 18th meeting. Good luck to all who are interested. There will be a Christmas in July jewelry sale on Monday July 10th from 9am until noon. Many new and gently used items will be sold. The thrift shop is asking for gently used clothing for resale. Due to the recent flooding, many of the items in stock had to be discarded. Yarn and jewelry items are also welcome for the craft classes. Anyone who has not made their annual donation to SNAP, please try to do so as soon as possible. Members who have complained about the circle parking, it is open to all and is based on a first come first parked basis. Seating in the dining room is still one person, one saved seat, no saving entire tables. For those of you who feel everything is changing at the center and you are not happy, please feel free to let Nina or Mindy know what is bothering you so steps can be taken to make changes. Construction in the new building continues to be on-going. Nina has a new intern, Anisa Bartholomew, so please welcome her when you meet her. Stay cool this summer and make an effort to welcome new members to your tables. Thank you all for being so understanding.

Thank you all Carole Vahey, President

SUPPORT GROUPS AT SNAP

SNAP is pleased to offer several support groups for the senior community. Recognizing the importance of having a safe, comfortable and confidential space to share your thoughts and feelings, SNAP offers the following groups: • Men’s Discussion Group, Mondays at

11:00 AM

• Reminiscence Group, Tuesdays at 10:30 AM

• Women’s Wisdom Circle, Wednesdays at 11:00 AM

PLEASE REMEMBER SNAP IN YOUR WILL OR TRUST

There are many ways to give to charity and good causes. Bequests can serve as a memorial to honor the memory of a loved one, or establish a fund for a particular aspect of SNAP. Bequests are often a final communication one has with descendants, a way of demonstrating your values and setting an example for your heirs. A planned gift or bequest to SNAP helps you to determine your legacy in a truly meaningful way and have a profound impact on the future of the organization. Please remember SNAP so that we can continue to provide important services to others in our community. If you have any questions, you may call Ronald J. Schwartz, Elder Law Attorney at (718) 347-6100.
