Peaceful Solutions is a program for women who have struggles with domestic violence. An older woman, “Jane”, recently came to us seeking help. Growing up, she experienced violence in her family, and in turn, married an abusive husband. She came to us multiple times for counseling, but none of the sessions had been effective in addressing the root cause of her problems. Anger and rage consumed her, which caused a significant amount of personal issues in her daily life and relationships. “Jane” began attending individual counseling sessions in conjunction with group sessions. Throughout this process, she learned about herself and how everything that occurred throughout her life had shaped the way that she perceived things around her. “Jane” became a leader during group sessions as she was always willing to share her emotional experience, which made others comfortable to share their stories. During the individual sessions, she was able to take what she learned in group and apply it to her own life. She was able to process the trauma that she had experienced throughout her life. Today, “Jane” reports that she is no longer filled with the rage that once consumed her. She has begun to repair her relationships with her adult children and has even forgiven her own mother for things that have happened to her. Without the Counseling Services at F&CS, “Jane” admits that she wouldn’t have been able to heal and make these life changes.

Having lost her husband within the last year, “Marge” has been withdrawn and discouraged. She suffers from chronic pain in her back, which restricts her mobility, her interactions with others and her perspective on life. Her physical therapist assigned exercises to improve her mobility range, but she lacked the energy to do them. “Marge” was losing her appetite, her interest in preparing meals was non-existent and keeping up with housework was just daunting. Then “Marge” met Ruth, a recently retired, energetic volunteer with the Portage County Senior Companion Program.
Ruth began helping “Marge” with housekeeping tasks and with reorganizing her dresser drawers. Before, clothing was stuffed into drawers wherever it would fit, wrinkled and disorganized. Now, “Marge” can easily find what she’s looking for and can put together nice outfits. They have also tackled the issue of “Marge’s” eating habits and Ruth even has a fool-proof plan for her to get her exercises done by completing them with her.
“Ruth, I so appreciate all you do. It means so much to know that someone cares that I’m still here, that it matters that I’m still here.” Marge.

Daniel and his wife both worked full-time jobs for over 20 years, then in 2008 Dan’s job moved to Mexico. The State of Ohio offered a two-year training and job placement opportunity, so he began training in computer science. Dan finished his classes in 2010 but had been ill for the last year and did much of the education from home. The doctors knew he was ill but couldn’t figure out what was wrong.
Two weeks after graduation, Dan had a major heart attack and was found by his wife in their back yard. He was hospitalized and very ill for a long time, including lung, liver and kidney failure on top of the heart problem. The hospital stay and medical treatment accumulated more than $20,000 in debt. Medical collectors began harassing him the day he was released from the hospital. Dan did the best he could with small payments to each collector, but they continued the harassment.
Dan was referred to CCCS to see if they could help his situation. He entered the Debt Management Program in May of 2012 and today states that CCCS helped him stabilize his budget and money flow and now he can focus on his recovery.

Xavier was one of the many children involved in Jake’s Kids, a summer program at the King Kennedy Community Center that is meant to encourage and challenge children in the Portage area. Xavier preferred to spend his time mostly to himself. He wasn’t interested in any athletic activities or interacting with other children, and spent most of his time with the staff and playing cards.
Over the course of the program, staff members noticed Xavier begin to make friends with the other children. The more friends he made, the more he involved he became in other activities such as basketball, soccer and karate. One of the largest improvements that the staff noticed was when they would say goodbye at the end of the day; Xavier would look them in they eye and shake their hands. This really gave the staff proof that Xavier was beginning to grow into a young man.
If not for the support of the community, Xavier wouldn’t have been able to feel comfortable breaking out of his shell.

“John” had struggled with a drug use and was ordered supervised visitation with his young son “Jack”, with whom he had had very little interaction with. “John” was anxious about coming and had expressed concerns about knowing how to fill the visitation time and how to begin repairing and building a positive relationship with his son. “Jack” was also aprehensive about the upcoming visitations and expressed to his mother and staff that he didn’t want to come.
The visitations were scheduled and the first few visits were awkward, but both John and Jack managed to fill the time with different activities. After a few setbacks, the visits began occuring on a regular basis and John began engaging in a meaningful way with Jack. He started to bring in his own activities and meals that they could enjoy together. Over several weeks their bond strengthened and they began to open up to each other about sensitive issues. The holidays were soon approaching and John brought in gifts that he had bought for his son.
John’s demeanor began to change and he started to carry himself differently and became more confident in his role as a parent. Jack was now excited to see his father and would run to the door when John walked into the center. Without the support and services at Place of Peace, John wouldn’t have been able to have a strong, positive relationship with Jack.
