    Services, equipment and systems for

    Topsides & Floating Units

  • Norwegian based companies in the oil and gas sector have a well established reputation and a significant market share as providers of services, equipment and systems to topsides and substructures for fixed and floating production platforms and drilling rigs. In this catalogue we present the cluster of INTSOK part-ners that provide products and services towards topsides in general, as well as for the various types of floating support structures. This catalogue is relevant for: • Oil companies • Engineering and EPC Contractors• Major shipyards• Rig/ship owners

TOPSIDESGenerally topsides comprises of production systems, supporting systems and accommodation for personnel. Its content is derived from the services it delivers in exploit-ing an oil and/or gas field. E.g. separate oil, gas and water, deliver power and other utilities or house personnel.

Its support structure; i.e. Jacket, GBS, SEMI, TLP, SPARs or a floating (monohull) vessels, is designed to support the topsides in the marine environment and in some cases provide storage of the produced liquids. In the early years of offshore developments, jackets were nor-mally used to support the topsides – and in Norway the GBS (Gravity Based concrete Structure) was invented and extensively used. However for water depths exceed-ing 150-200 meters, floating solutions are superior to fixed installations.

FLOATING SUPPORT STRUCTURESFloating support structures have been deployed in a number of specific offshore services to find, develop and produce oil & gas, examples are mobile drilling rigs, service vessels and oil production platforms. While the FPSO has been the preferred floating production solution in most of the world, other solutions have been applied in the US GoM, particularly SEMIs , Tension Leg Platforms (TLPs) and SPAR.

THE SEMI-SUBMERSIBLE. • The SEMI is a specialized vessel with good stability

and sea keeping characteristics. It is commonly used in a number of specific offshore roles such as for off-shore drilling rigs, oil production platforms and heavy lift cranes. It can be dynamically positioned or spread moored. The semi-submersible obtains its buoyancy from pontoons located below sea level. Structural columns connect the pontoons and operating deck, which can be located high above the sea level and waves due to the good stability of the concept.

THE TENSION-LEG PLATFORM. • The TLP is a vertically moored floating structure

used for oil & gas production in water depths

normally greater than 300 meters. The platform is permanently moored by means of groups of tethers (i.e. tension legs) at each of the structure’s corners. The tension leg design eliminates vertical motion of the platform, allowing the platform to have dry X-mas trees on deck, connected directly to the subsea wells by rigid risers. This allows a simpler well completion and easier access for well intervention.

    • The “SPAR” platform is a deep-draft floating caisson, which is a hollow cylindrical structure similar to a very large buoy. The spar relies on a traditional spread mooring system, to maintain its position. The SPAR design is now being used for drilling and production. The distinguishing feature of a spar is its deep-draft hull, which produces very favorable motion charac-teristics compared to other floating concepts. Low motions and a protected centre-well also provide an excellent configuration for deepwater operations.

THE FLOATING PRODUCTION, STORAGE AND OFFLOADING UNIT. The FPSO is the dominant type of FPU and constituted around 70% of the FPU market in 2010. The FPSO is a floating vessel designed to receive hydrocarbons pro-duced from nearby platforms or subsea templates, sepa-rate the oil and gas and water, and store the oil until it can be offloaded onto a tanker. The FPSOs are particularly effective in remote or deepwater locations where subsea pipelines are not cost effective. In harsh environments the risers are connected to the vessel, through a turret, which allows the vessel to weather-wane. Alternatively, in benign environments like West Africa the FPSO can be spread moored and risers connected to the vessel at the side. FPSOs have historically been constructed by con-verting tanker vessels for oil production purposes, but in recent years there has been a shift towards purpose built FPSOs designed for given field parameters.

FPSO’S FOR LIQUEFACTION OF NATURAL GAS. These are called FLNG and there are currently several FLNG projects in execution. To mention a few: Malaysia has the PETRONAS’ Kanowit FLNG project and Australia has Shell’s Prelude FLNG project. Shell has entered into a frame agreement with the Technip/Samsung consortium to develop up to 10 FLNG units over a 15 year period and now several FLNG units are planned for the Browse field.

The selection of the floating support structure depends on the following criteria:• Dry or wet trees• Storage requirement• Available pipeline infrastructure• Operator familiarity• Field life • Cost• Area/field development plan (hub, tie-backs etc)

In 2012 Aker Solutions had aggregated annual revenues of approximately NOK 44, 9 billion. The company is listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange.

OUR VISION AND VALUESOur vision sets the overall goal for our business. Our values and the importance we give them must be reflected throughout our organisation and in every aspect of how we do business, every day.

Our vision is to be the preferred partner for solutions in the oil and gas industry through living our values.

All Aker Solutions employees share a common set of values – the compass that guides our policies, our operations and ultimately, our behaviour.

OUR VALUES ARE• Customer drive• HSE mindset• People and teams• Open and direct dialogue• Hands-on management• Delivering quality results

PRODUCTS AND SERVICESEach product, system and service competes on a standalone basis in the market. However, with our broad portfolio and experience, we understand the challenge and apply the knowledge to create optimal solutions.

Our products and services are structured into nine different business areas, which together can offer all technologies and services needed for the life of a field.

FRONT END SPECTRUMAker Solutions’ spectrum of in-house capability is unique in the oil and gas industry. It comprises our extensive experience, throughout the entire life cycle of a field, from the geological evaluation of prospects through project development, operations, modifica-tions and maintenance to decommissioning. Now we are utilising this by setting up a global organisation covering the entire spectrum of competencies needed in early phase work. Front End Spectrum – Feasibility and concept engineering by Aker Solutions.Front End Spectrum removes the traditional discipline barriers and executes projects in integrated teams producing early phase studies with a holistic scope. All with one overall goal: to increase the value of the field.

Front End Spectrum is a response to market demand. As the oil and gas industry is moving towards ever more complex, challenging and marginal fields, the need for a holistic approach in early phase work is increasing. During the last few years Aker Solutions has conducted several studies following the Front End Spectrum methodology providing the customer with:

    • Consistent concepts from reservoir to facilities• Realistic field development schedule• Safer operations• Operational predictability• Reliable cost estimates on all alternatives

As the market leader for the North Sea maintenance and modification markets, we have a unique insight into the production phase of a field. As-built information and performance data from production are continuously fed into our databases, which form an important basis for further improvement of future development projects. Through four decades, we have been supporting clients with a better decision process in early phase work.

FLOATERSAker Solutions designed and delivered the first floating drilling rigs in the late 1960’s. Today we offer a full range of floaters, covering semisubmersible drilling- and pro-duction rigs, Tension leg platforms, Spars and FPSO’s.

Semisubmersible drilling rigsAker Solutions has been responsible for the design and construction of a large number of the semi-submersible drilling rigs delivered for worldwide operations. A total of 39 units of Aker H-3, H-4 and H-6 design have been built. 20 delivered from own yards, the remaining built by other yards on license. Recently, the success of the Aker H-3/H-4 has been followed up with the Aker H-6e, likely the world’s most advanced semisubmersible drilling rigs. They are specially designed to meet high environmental standards and can operate in ultra-deep waters, harsh environments, and extreme temperatures and at long distances from supply infrastructure. The latest concept is the H-6x, tailored for harsh environ-ment and mid-water operations (1500 meters water depth). The hull is identical to the well proven H-6e design. Operational experience from the two H-6e units Transocean Spitsbergen and Transocean Barents and new industry demands are embedded in the design. The H-6x features large deck areas, storage and pay load capacities, and is prepared for full winterisation.
