INTRODUCTION
Certified by ServiceNow, iQSonar is an agentless, best-of-breed
discovery and dependency solution used in large-scale data
centers. It automates the process of collecting in-depth data
about hardware and software relationships across the pool of
compute, storage and network resources, which is critical for
supporting the growing volume and complexity of enterprise
applications.
The data from iQSonar enhances the ServiceNow platform and
helps organizations in a number of ways:
• Managing and reducing costs through IT transformation
and data center consolidation
• Migrating to cloud service architectures
• Managing license compliance positions for enterprise
applications deployed in the data center
AGILE SOLUTION FOR THE AGILE DATA CENTER
The proliferation of applications and cloud-based services
makes it much harder for organizations to manage and
optimize the data center.
Technology integration costs
are constantly rising to meet
the requirements of this
disruptive change, resulting
in web-scale architectures –
driven by virtualization and
clustering technologies – that
make the process of data
center discovery much more
challenging.
Compounding the problem is the need to scale and keep up
with the extending boundaries of the modern enterprise,
adapting to restrictions introduced by network architecture,
different business units and an ever-growing volume of network
devices. Processes and systems designed years ago are no
longer equipped or adaptable to this new world of agile IT.
Inaccurate or incomplete data limits the ability to effectively
optimize operations or execute IT strategies, leading to higher
risks and costs. The enterprise ultimately needs to adopt a
bi-modal approach to IT management that bridges the existing
deployment architectures of today with the dynamic agile
architectures of the future.
Certified by ServiceNow, iQSonar is an agentless, best-of-breed discovery and dependency solution used in large-scale data centers. It automates the process of collecting in-depth data about hardware and software relationships across the pool of compute, storage and network resources, which is critical for supporting the growing volume and complexity of enterprise applications.
HOW IT WORKS
iQSonar uses IP-based discovery to find and
scan devices and applications, gathering detailed
information and mapping dependencies around
hardware, operating systems, clustering and
virtualization technologies.
Providing a complete picture of multi-level
relationships and associated asset classes, the
discovery and inventory data is cleansed and
checked for accuracy. A central repository contains
all operational meta-data and a full inventory of
assets, hardware/software topologies and relationship
dependencies that can be readily shared with
ServiceNow.
Using an integration plug-in, iQSonar populates the
ServiceNow CMDB providing a rich source of data
for use in ServiceNow process models. The iQSonar
discovered data can be aggregated and consumed
by all ServiceNow developed processes such as asset
registries and license management applications.
ROLE OF THE CMDB
At the heart of this disruptive change is the Configuration
Management Database (CMDB). The CMDB’s most
important role is to integrate IT data for operations
and planning purposes and provide the context for
understanding the broader IT landscape, enabling
enterprises to be more agile in the delivery and support
of new business applications and drive greater cost
savings and efficiencies.
The CMDB needs to capture the complex hardware/
software relationships and dependencies underlying data
center infrastructure, covering industry-leading operating
systems (Windows, Unix, Linux), network and storage
devices, and clustering and virtualization technologies.
iQSonar has unique scope and discovery capabilities
that gathers more complete and accurate data to
populate the CMDB. It is a best-of-breed, out-of-the-
box discovery and dependency mapping solution that
exploits the power of ServiceNow functionality. By
populating ServiceNow’s CMDB with a rich and accurate
source of data, it covers the complex relationships and
dependencies that underpin data center infrastructure.

EXPLOIT THE FULL POWER OF SERVICENOW
The integration of two cutting-edge solutions empowers
organizations with valuable insights that lead to more informed
decision-making. It drives immediate savings by removing waste;
improves license management positions – avoiding costly audits
– and helps control IT costs. Overall, it sets organizations on
course for a highly optimized IT environment.
Integrating iQSonar data with ServiceNow gives unparalleled
visibility of complex dependencies and their context in relation
to virtual machines and the underlying infrastructure that aligns
with the changing demands of their application workloads.
Using iQSonar data to expose relationships between the
CMDB CIs, ServiceNow will identify and manage infrastructure
components and their relationships, including cluster-node
members, virtual machine guests and associated hosts,
database hosting with associated catalogs and many others.
The combination of iQSonar and ServiceNow enables
enterprises to harness the full power of the CMDB. Integration
is seamless, with no modification needed to support CMDB
population in the majority of ServiceNow deployments. The
integration uses the standard CMDB hierarchy of objects to
ensure the full complexity of CMDB elements is enabled.
Perfect Partnership
iQSonar and ServiceNow
Populate the CMDB with
accurate and in-depth data
to deliver management and
operational benefits:
• IT transformation – before
you modify applications you
need to understand their
dependencies and the likely
impact of any changes.
• Software license
compliance and
optimization – mitigate the
risks of software audits with
a deeper understanding
of assets across clusters
and virtualized platforms
that make licensing metrics
more complicated.
• Cloud management
– identify application
and infrastructure
dependencies for clarity
on what will work best in
the cloud, and extend your
discovery capabilities to
encompass hybrid estates.
