LPT's New Reman Lexmark Fuser

LPT is happy to unveil in this issue of Service Edge re-manufactured alternatives for two popular fusers. The first one we will look at is for an array of Lexmark print-ers. The 40X7743 fuser uses a sleeve rather than the metal roller. It is the first "sleeved" Lexmark fuser LPT has remanufactured.

According to Lexmark, 19 models and 40 sub-mod-els use this fuser. The models are

• M5155, M5163, M5170

• MS810, MS811, MS812

• MX710, MX711, MX810, MX811, MX812

• XM5163, XM5170, XM7155, XM7163, XM7170, XM7155, XM7163, XM7170

We are confident you will love our remanufactured 40X7743. Of course, we also offer OEM versions of this fuser and its maintenance kit. After all, when it comes to fusers, it pays to have options.

Firmware Update Causing Poor Fusing in the HP LJ M601

To ensure proper fusing on a broad range of media, most HP laser printers allow fuser temperature adjust-ment. For example, a user printing on letterhead could change the default Print Mode for Letterhead from nor-mal mode to light mode if the paper was getting crum-pled from excess heat, or to heavy mode if the toner didn't fuse properly.

A recent firmware update1 for the M601/M602/M603 has a problem. This revision sets the default

1 DC Controller version 5.121, FW Revision 2307851_000040 (25 Feb 2016)

Print Mode for plain paper to Light instead of Normal, and the resulting lack of heat can result in fusing issues, namely, smeared toner and the repetition of the image down the page (ghosting).

Changing the print mode to NORMAL MODE (or to HEAVY MODE if problems persist) is the solution. The instructions for this task are at the end of this article. First we will look at Print Mode and other modes.

Traditionally, color printers offered more modes than the monochrome. Monochrome printers introduced before 2011 limited the modes to LOW, NORMAL, and HIGH. Since 2011, the color and black and white print-ers both offer many options. Here is what the M601 series offers. Note that the available modes may differ slightly for different printers, different firmware revi-sions, and different paper types.

In general, the default modes match paper type (for example, the default mode for cardstock is “Card-stock mode”, as you would expect). However, not all paper types have an exact correspondence in the list of modes. There is no “Plain mode” or “Letterhead mode”, for example. For most of these types, the default mode is “Normal” – although, as mentioned above, the new firmware gets this wrong for plain pa-per.

If you have no fusing issues, you can just leave all these “Print mode” settings at their default setting. But if you are experiencing print-quality issues like ghosting or incomplete fusing, you can adjust the print mode to something that would normally require a higher fuser temperature, such as “Heavy mode” or “Cardstock mode” or “Rough mode”. Note that this may slow the printer down, but sometimes that’s what it takes to get proper fusing on demanding media (labels, en-velopes, etc.), and sometimes even on plain paper. At the very least, make sure the print mode for plain paper is not set to light!

The Other Modes

The M601 service manual describes other modes for improving fuser performance.

• Resistance Mode. Iif you experience print-quali-ty issues in low-humidity environments with resistive or rough surface media, set the Resistance Mode to Up.

• Humidity Mode. If you experience print-quality issues in high-humidity environments, set the Humidity Mode to High.

• Fuser Temp Mode. Although described in the manual, this mode's existence is in doubt.

Why Doesn’t the Printer Pull Paper from the Cassettes?

Did you ever have a printer refuse to pick up paper from a cassette and request paper be loaded? This can happen when the printer fails to detect the expected paper size and type. We devised the following trou-ble-shooting steps to help you deal with this common problem quickly.

1. CHECK THE DETECTED SIZE. Print a Configura-tion Page and locate where it lists the trays and the pa-per size detected for each.1 If the detected size does not match what is actually in the tray, something is wrong with the paper-size sensing mechanism (go to Step 6). If they match, it is a settings issue (Step 2).

1 Alternatively, you can press Go or Continue when the printer flashes the Load Paper message. The display message will read OK TO USE [Type] [Size] INSTEAD? If the size indicated in the message matches what is in the cassette, the problem is with the settings (step 2-5).

2. CHECK PRINTER SETTINGS. Print a Menu Map from the Information Menu of the printer, which will in-dicate the defined paper type for each tray. If the type does not match what is in the tray, you have found the conflict. If they match, go to Step 3.

3. CHECK WINDOWS SETTINGS. Open the com-puter's Control Panel and then open Printer and Faxes. Right-click on the appropriate printer icon and select Printing Preferences. Click on the tab that refers to Pa-per. Make sure the Source isn't pointing to an empty tray, such as Tray 1. If the Size and Type do not match what is in the tray, you have found the conflict. If they match, go to Step 4.

4. CHECK THE SOFTWARE SETTINGS. With a doc-ument open, press Ctrl and P to open the Print menu. Click Properties, then Paper (or Paper/Quality). After you verify that Source isn't pointing to an empty tray, see if the Size and Type match what is in the tray. If they match, go to Step 5.

5. CHECK THE PAGE SETTINGS. With a document open, click on File at the upper left and choose Page Setup from the drop-down menu. Choose Page. Once again, verify that the Paper Source isn't pointing to an empty tray, and that everything matches what is in the trays. If everything matches, go to Step 6.

6. MECHANICAL FAILURE. A mechanical failure has caused a paper-size sensing error. Replace the cassette with a known-working cassette. If the problem per-sists, the paper-size sensing assembly inside the printer needs to be replaced. On the other hand, if the printer pulls from the swapped tray, inspect the original tray's paper size mechanism for damage or incorrect setting.

It is essential to provide the correct model description when you call LPT tech support. This isn't as easy as it used to be. Once LaserJet models were spelled out in a couple of letters. Today it takes a half-dozen words. To ensure critical informa-tion is not left out we recommend you write down the entire name.

Recently a customer called us about a LaserJet Pro 400 without realizing this is not a model. He had to call us back. The actual model, M475dn, was easy to miss, as you can see for yourself in the top fig-ure.

Along with the complete model name, be prepared to tell us:

• Who you are. Please help the pro-vider verify your status as a current LPT customer. Tell him the name of your com-pany and answer any questions.

• What is happening, when it happens and for how long it has been going on.

• What tests you have run and repairs you have attempted.

Tech support gives you access to ex-perts with an average of 24 years in HP and Lexmark printer service. Ask for Ed-die if you require help with Brother, HP DesignJet and other printers.

LPT offers its active customers free tech-nical support weekdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. CST. The direct, toll-free number is 866-947-9295.
