Page 10: Service of Worship - Web viewJ. S. Bach “Prelude in D ... Choral. Benediction * Passing of the Peace. ... The word of the Lord was rare in those days; visions were not widespread

Clover: I thank Forest Hill Church, its members and friends, for the love, kindness and support shown me these past eleven years. I thank my colleagues in ministry for their partnership in ministry. I ask forgiveness for the mistakes I have made. I am grateful for the way my leadership has been accepted. As I leave, I carry with me all that I have learned from each of you.

People: We receive your thankfulness, offer forgiveness and accept that you now leave to minister elsewhere. We express our gratitude for your time among us. We ask your forgiveness for our mistakes. Your influence on our faith and faithfulness will not leave us at your departure.

Clover: I forgive you and accept your gratitude, trusting that our time together and our parting are pleasing to God.

All who are able, please stand.John to congregation:

Do you, the members and friends of Forest Hill Church, release Pastor Clover from the duties of pastor?

People:  We do, with the help of God.John: Do you offer your encouragement for her ministry soon to begin as

pastor of Montview Boulevard Presbyterian Church?People: We do, with the help of God.John: Do you, Pastor Clover, release Forest Hill Church from turning to you

and depending on you? Do you offer your encouragement for the continued ministry here?

Clover: I do, with God’s help. John: In thanksgiving, let us pray:

We thank you, Gracious God, for our life together in this congregation and community. You have led Clover by the Holy Spirit to serve your people in this place, to build up your Church, and to glorify your name. We have worked in common for the sake of the Gospel. Together we have studied your Word. Together we have broken bread and given thanks. The time we were together in your name saw our laughter and tears, our hopes and disappointments. Guide us as we hold these cherished memories but move in new directions to serve you faithfully in the church and world with justice and love through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Lessons Today’s Scriptures

1 Samuel 3:1-10

10

Page 11: Service of Worship - Web viewJ. S. Bach “Prelude in D ... Choral. Benediction * Passing of the Peace. ... The word of the Lord was rare in those days; visions were not widespread

Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the LORD under Eli. The word of the LORD was rare in those days; visions were not widespread. At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his room; the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was. Then the LORD called, “Samuel! Samuel!” and he said, “Here I am!” and ran to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call; lie down again.” So he went and lay down. The LORD called again, “Samuel!” Samuel got up and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call, my son; lie down again.” Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, and the word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him. The LORD called Samuel again, a third time. And he got up and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” Then Eli perceived that the LORD was calling the boy. Therefore Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down; and if he calls you, you shall say, ‘Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. Now the LORD came and stood there, calling as before, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

Psalm 139

O LORD, you have searched me and known me.

You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from far away.

You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways.

Even before a word is on my tongue, O LORD, you know it completely.

You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me.

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is so high that I cannot attain it.

Where can I go from your spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence?

If I ascend to heaven, you are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there.

If I take the wings of the morning and settle at the farthest limits of the sea,

even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me fast.

11

Page 12: Service of Worship - Web viewJ. S. Bach “Prelude in D ... Choral. Benediction * Passing of the Peace. ... The word of the Lord was rare in those days; visions were not widespread

If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light around me become night,”

even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is as bright as the day, for darkness is as light to you.

For it was you who formed my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.

I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; that I know very well.

My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth.

Your eyes beheld my unformed substance. In your book were written all the days that were formed for me, when none of them as yet existed.

How weighty to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them!

I try to count them—they are more than the sand; I come to the end—I am still with you.

Next Sunday: 2 Samuel 11: 1-15; Psalm 14; Ephesians 3: 14-21; John 6: 1-21 Set aside time each day for prayer and study. As you read the lessons for the week, consider how they settle or challenge you? What image or word catches your attention? Keep notes of your observations in a journal.
