The restored Chapel nave. Photo credit: Duke Photography.

On this Trinity Sunday we give thanks to God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—for the restoration of the Chapel building. We celebrate all that God has done in this sacred space and all that the Lord will do. We honor those who have restored this Chapel and celebrate the community in which we serve. Our Scripture readings this morning tell of the coming of the Holy Spirit, who continues to move with joy among all peoples. The Chapel seeks to be a place that celebrates diversity and provides a place of sanctuary for all.

  • The congregation is asked to remain silent during the prelude as a time of prayer and meditation. The Chapel welcomes families with children. If at any time during the service your child needs a place for active play, please know there is a nursery in the Chapel basement.

Children from the Congregation will lead the gathered community into the nave from the Chapel lawn.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways to the glory of your name. Amen.

    *litany of thanksgiving

Blessed be your name, O Lord, for it has pleased you to put into the hearts of your servants to devote this house to your honor and worship. Therefore, having by your grace brought the restoration work of this year to consummation, with one accord and with grateful hearts we give thanks to you for Duke Chapel for you are the one only living and true God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

God Almighty, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, though the heavens cannot contain you, much less the walls of temples made with hands, for your abiding presence whenever two or three have gathered together in your name,

We give you thanks, O God.

For the confession of faith in Jesus Christ and the joy and knowledge through service of him in the world,

We give you thanks, O God.

  • For making us your children by adoption and grace, for the knowledge of your will and the power to perform it, for the pardon of sins, which restores us to the company of your faithful people, for the faith of those who have gone before us and for our encouragement by their perseverance,

We give you thanks, O God.

For this sacred place of beauty and holiness offered to your honor and glory,

We give you thanks, O God.

For those who had the wise vision to build the foundations of this institution in faith and hope, and for those who, generation after generation, have guided its progress and nurtured the heritage committed to their trust,

We give you thanks, O God.

For those who toiled daily to restore this building to its original beauty, climbing to great heights, patiently removing flaws, and reinforcing its structures,

We give you thanks, O God.

For those who have gone before us from this fellowship into varied ways of life and served generations with devotion and in faith,

We give you thanks, O God.

For the freedom of the Spirit in the knowledge of the truth, for the new commandment that we love one another, and for the experience of abundant life,

We give you thanks, O God.

For the prayers that have risen as incense, for the words of our mouths and meditations of our hearts that have been acceptable in your sight, for meals that have nourished our souls, for water that has washed us into your family, and for faithful services of joy and sorrow,

We give you thanks, O God.

For the opportunities of ministry—the contemplation of beauty in music and the arts, community outreach, and work with students— for communion with the unseen and eternal and for worship expressed in spirit and in truth,

We give you thanks, O God.

For those who when weary and burdened, suffering and disappointed, lonely and afraid are able to find rest and healing for their souls here,

We give you thanks, O God.

  • For a rising structure of living faith and beauty above the halls of learning, reminding us from where and whom we have come and to where and whom we are going,

We give you thanks, O God.

For the future set before us and the hope instilled within us,

We give you thanks, O God.

    Yours, O Lord, is the honor, the power, the glory, and the majesty;

For everything in heaven and on earth is yours. We give you thanks, O God, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
