1 Service-Learning Handout People Serving People www.peopleservingpeople.org Agency Description: People Serving People provides emergency housing and community services that assist families experiencing homelessness in becoming self-sufficient and reconnecting with the community. In a safe, secure and sober environment, PSP provides services which cultivate independence and accountability. What distinguishes PSP from other emergency shelters is the broad range of on-site programs and services designed to address common barriers that homeless families are faced with. To provide a new opportunity for families, it is necessary that we help them find ways to break through these barriers and stop patterns that lead to poverty and homelessness. Housing and employment issues are addressed, along with educational, emotional, early childhood development, and life enrichment needs. Position Description: Volunteers allow People Serving People to provide necessary services to our families. In fact, in 2014, People Serving People volunteers generously contributed over 32,000 hours of service. Volunteers make a difference! We have long term (2-3 mo. Commitment) and one-time volunteer positions available. Long Term Volunteer Positions: Commit to a regular weekly schedule for 2-3 months. Roving Reader Reading to PSP children in our front lobby and helping to maintain our library. Each shift is 2 hours.

Monday-Sunday: 8am-8pm (2 hour shift minimum)

Computer Mentor Help the technology resource center staff assist PSP guests while on the computer. Assist with resume and cover letter formatting, job searches online, and the like.

M-F: 3pm-8pm (2 hour shifts); Saturday: 1-3pm (2 hour shifts)

Resident Resources Assistant

Help our front desk staff assist PSP guests. Duties include guest check-in, answering phones, and dispensing hygiene items. You must be able to work in a diverse and fast-paced setting.

Everyday: 8am-8pm (3-4 hour shifts minimum)

Donations Organizer Assist staff with the sorting and upkeep of donated items and storage space.

M: 10am-2pm, Tue 8am-2pm, Wed 1:30-3:30pm (2 hour shift, weekly or one-time)

Teen Programs- D3

Dream it, Design it, Do it! D3 challenges teens to be problem solvers, innovators, risk-takers and creators as they develop projects that are meaningful to them.

M-H: 5:30-8pm

Development Assistant

Help donor relations and fundraising. Write thank you cards, event preparation, etc…Good handwriting is a must!

M-F: 2-3 hours between 8am-4pm

Short-Term Volunteer Positions:

Meal Server*

Serve breakfast, lunch or dinner to PSP guests and assist with clean-up as necessary.

Breakfast: 7:30am-9am; Lunch: 11:30am-1pm; Dinner: 4:15pm-5:45pm

Building Beautification*

Assist our housekeeping department with duties including general upkeep of the building and donation sorting.

M-F: 9am-4pm (2-3 hour shift); Weekends: 9am-3pm (2-3 hour shifts)

Loaves and Fishes www.loavesandfishesmn.org/ Agency Description: The mission of Loaves & Fishes is to provide nutritious meals to those facing hunger in Minnesota in an atmosphere of hospitality at site locations where the need is greatest. Over 6500 volunteers assist in serving at dining sites across the state of Minnesota serving nearly 1,900 meals every night. Position Description: Volunteers work together at our dining sites, along with Loaves & Fishes staff, to share a meal with our guests. Volunteers can serve in one or all of the following ways:

Meal preparation: Volunteers work at the dining sites with Loaves & Fishes Site Coordinators to prepare meals. No special cooking skills are required!

Meal serving & clean up: Volunteers work together to serve the meal, either serving guests as they come through a line or by serving trays of food to guests at tables. Volunteers help throughout the meal as well as after the meal to assist with kitchen and dining area clean up.

Guest Hospitality: Some individuals serve as hospitality volunteers by visiting with guests, sharing a meal and conversation.

Locations: Various locations throughout the Twin Cities Metro and outstate. How to Apply:

Students can pickup a Normandale timesheet in the Center for Experiential Education in C1066 or can download a timesheet online at www.normandale.edu/cee under “Key Partners.” Loaves and Fishes does not keep track of volunteer hours centrally so you must get a timesheet signed each time you volunteer. Turn in completed timesheets to the Center for Experiential Education (C1066).

Partnership Academy Agency Description: Partnership Academy is a K-5 Charter School in Richfield. They serve a diverse student group and the school has a large population of Latino students for whom Spanish is their first language. Our mission is to create learning experiences and partnerships that empower students to achieve their greatest potential in order to be positive contributors to their community Location: 305 E. 77th St. Richfield 55423

Position Description: After or Before School Program Tutors/Mentors: Partnership Academy seeks volunteers of diverse backgrounds and experiences to help make reading, writing, and learning fun. Volunteers serve as After-School Program Tutors/Mentors, Monday – Thursday (times to be determined). Most volunteers serve 1 or 2 days per week; the minimum commitment is serving one night per week for a minimum of 1 semester. However, we intend to recruit volunteers that can commit to a full academic school year.

After/Before School Program Tutors/Mentors: • Support youth as they engage in fun literacy-building activities • Help youth meet individual literacy goals in a 1:1 or small group setting • Provide hands-on attention that empowers youth to develop greater self-confidence and stronger literacy skills • Support in club program • Demonstrate a commitment to youth through consistent attendance and encouragement • Work with staff to maintain a safe and supportive learning environment. Metro South Adult Basic Education

Agency Description: Metro South Adult Basic Education provides basic educational opportunities to adults in Bloomington, Eden Prairie, Edina, and Richfield. Classes are offered in the areas of GED test preparation, high school diploma programs, English as a Second Language (ESL), and basic skills such as reading, writing, and mathematics. Position Description: In general, we seek volunteers who assist instructors and students in ESL and adult basic education classes. We have a variety of volunteering locations and options. All classes are led by licensed ESL teachers and all students are adults learning English at various levels. Volunteers generally serve for 1.25-2 hours per week for the duration of the semester. 1) Normandale Adult Basic Education Tutor: Metro South Adult Basic Education offers free College Prep classes in Reading, Writing, and Math held at Normandale Community College in the Tutoring Center. Tuesdays or Thursdays between 4:00-9:00 pm students can assist the teacher and adult ESL students with pre-college reading and writing skills needed to pass the Normandale placement tests. 2) Metro South Main Campus Tutor: Tuesdays or Thursdays from 11:15 am-12:30 pm volunteers assist teachers and adult ESL students with 4th grade and higher reading skills in our STAR reading program. Location: 2575 W. 88th St., Bloomington, MN 55431. 3) Hennepin Technical College Tutor: Mondays through Fridays 12:30-2:00 pm volunteers assist teachers and adult ESL students with reading skills. Location: Hennepin Technical College, 13100 College View Drive, Eden Prairie, MN 55347. 4) Additional Opportunities: We have additional morning, afternoon, and evening weekday opportunities. Simpson Housing Services

Agency Description: In the heart of Minneapolis, Simpson Housing Services offers a variety of services that strive to bring people in off the street and help them find and obtain stability. Their mission is to house, support and advocate for people experiencing homelessness. Position Description: Simpson Housing Services’ shelter provides one-on-one advocacy services and overnight shelter for 22 women and 44 men every night of the year. Shelter guests may stay at the shelter from a few weeks to several months, depending on their situation. Volunteers work with a dedicated team of staff members during the shelter operating hours of 5 pm to 9 am.

Three volunteer shifts are available:

Evening Shift: 4:45 pm - 10 pm

Overnight Shift: 9 pm – 7 am, this includes a sleeping shift from 11 pm – 4 am

Morning Shift: 7 am - 9 am Volunteers assist staff with welcoming guests to the shelter, distributing supplies, providing wake-ups, and answering questions. Volunteers must be 18 years old or older and orientation and training is provided. Shifts are available every day of the year and scheduling is done online. This site requires a minimum commitment of 50 hours in a 6 month period. How to Apply: Complete our online application: http://www.simpsonhousing.org/volunteer_ap.html. VEAP Agency Description: VEAP provides a range of basic services that fulfill an immediate need in people's lives and position them for long-term success. VEAP has long recognized that there are people in Bloomington, Richfield, Edina and South Minneapolis that are low-income and in need of some help to prevent them from a financial crisis. Based on the idea of neighbors helping neighbors, VEAP provides this critical help to our neighbors in need. VEAP has a new location at 9600 Aldrich Avenue South, Bloomington, MN 55420. Position Description: Volunteer areas include but are not limited to: Warehouse and Distribution Areas. These positions provide support to the Food Program services through scheduling food appointments, receiving and sorting donated products, stocking shelves and assisting clients in the Distribution Area.
