ANNOUNCEMENTS

15 DECEMBER 2019 3 THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT

BANNS OF MARRIAGE III Abby Muhlenkamp & Zach Fullenkamp

The Musings of Our Pastor

Many moons ago, I came across an eye-appealing emerald green vessel, which was quite slender and nearly 24 inches tall with a V-shaped stopper on top. It's simplicity and its elegance begged me to take possession of it, which might justify my description of it as a "chosen vessel". In fact, on a number of occasions, I have used this "chosen vessel" as a visual aid, especially for homilies about the Blessed Virgin Mary on a Feast like the Immaculate Conception. As we enter into the 3rd Week of Advent, I have suggested that we might name or label the 3rd candle on the Advent Wreath (i.e., the pink candle) with the words "chosen vessel", especially as we begin to focus more fully on the Mystery of the Incarnation, the Birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. Mary, of course, is that wonderful, humble and faith-filled "chosen vessel" through whom Jesus, God's Only-Begotten Son, would be born into our human family and into our world. What an awesome honor, what an awesome responsibility, what an awesome grace it was for this poor Jewish teenager to be chosen from all women to be the mother of Jesus, the Savior of the whole human family! How wonderful and inspiring it is for us to have her example of willingness or readiness to say "yes" to the mysterious workings of God in her life! Shame on those people, who so quickly and so smugly dismiss the remote possibility that youth and teenagers might actually doing anything, which we might find to be inspiring! In case we have forgotten the Mystery of the Incarnation celebrates the conviction that Jesus, God's Son, became flesh and made his dwelling within the womb Mary and among us. Our faith in this baffling Mystery of the Incarnation challenges each of to understand that we are also called, much like Mary herself, to be "chosen vessels" through whom Jesus "becomes flesh" and reveals his abundant love to others each day in all sorts of ways, in all sorts of situations. Do we have the willingness and the readiness to say "yes" to the workings of God in our own lives as did Mary? You might light the pink candle on the Advent Wreath adorning your family meal table and offer this brief prayer service before enjoying your meal together.

(Leader): What an incredible amount of faith we find in Mary, especially in her very youthful and very humble "yes" to the awesome role of being the Mother of Jesus! (All): Help us, O God, to become more "fully alive" in Jesus, and do our best to bring his loving presence to others each day. (Leader): What an inspiring example we have in Mary, who put aside her ambitions, dreams and wants, in order to accept the will of God and joyfully do his work! (All): Help us, O God, to be more open to doing your will in our lives, and to experience wonderful opportu-nities for personal growth from this. (Leader): As a "chosen vessel" , Mary used well the many graces God bestowed upon her to fulfill her unique vocation as the Mother of Jesus. (All): Help us, O God, as "chosen vessels" like Mary, to use your many gifts of grace to brighten the world with your goodness, love and peace. (All): Our Father

God bless you, and may Jesus, Emmanuel, fill your homes and your days with the warmth of his divine love! —Fr. Ken
