GREETINGS LIONS AND LIONESS OF DISTRICT 19-I, And so we come to March, with all the various Valentine’s, and Shrove Tuesday,
(pancakes!), and Food Bank related events which many of you ran so well, now successfully behind you.
March, that month, at least in the U.K., of mad hares, and on this side of the pond, that month of Mardi Gras and basketball madness, and signs, generally of Spring, as we approach the Solstice. In the distant past, March had its downsides, especially if your name was Julius Caesar. He, incidentally, had a whole lot of small ”L” lions that he could call on, but the service they provided was hardly community, or youth, or environment centered.
But, MD 19 Lions as a whole, and especially Lions and Lioness of this, your District, see this March as the Spring Forward month; the across the board membership drive month. Many Clubs will be doing tried and trusted events, some are looking at a never -done-before activities, some are ramping up the Ask One campaign, some are utilizing social media approaches, etc.,etc. All great ideas and projects. Kudos to the planners and to the recruiters, and hopefully, to the sponsors and mentors of all the new members we obtain. If your Club’s meeting schedule has you gathering late in the month, don’t worry if the new members are not officially inducted until April. They will all be counted and added to the MD grand totals. Indeed, if you have new members needing to be“officially” enrolled in April, you could persuade them to attend the District Conference, April 21-23, the inductions could be carried out there.
Conference Co-Chairs, Alyson and Bill Deslauriers of the Sidney Lions club, are asking all Clubs and individual Lions, Lioness if they have quality, or unique, items from their area which could become items for the silent auction or raffles at the event. All contributions will be warmly received. Information can go to the Co-Chairs, 250-655-4747, or e-mail [email protected], Or to Neil Howard , e-mail [email protected] or to my wife, Janet, 250-539-9876, e-mail [email protected] Thank you, in advance, for whatever you, or your Club can contribute. And lastly, don’t forget to register!!!
The link to the on-line registration is long, but the system works very well. It is www.eventbrite.ca/e/md-19-i-spring-conference-tickets-28986805315.
Should you need assistance with that site, please go to [email protected]. Regular rate registration will close APRIL 8, 2017.
If your Club wishes to have its banner displayed in Sidney, please send a HIGH resolution, (so no cellphone pics please) photo to address above by March 31. That date is also the cut-off date for you to send a photo and name of departed members during this current Lions year. This information is to go to [email protected].
Happy member gathering to all Clubs. We need to do very well at this. There is a strong possibility that it will become a 3-year project.

At our February 7th meeting we had a presentation from the Comox Valley Healthcare Foundation. Formally the St. Joseph Hospital Foundation, the name has changed and role expanded to include the new hospital which will open this fall.
Pictured above we have Lions Shelley and Chuck presenting a $5,000 cheque to Lynn Dashkewytch, Executive Director of the Comox Valley Healthcare Foundation. This foundation is then able to provide equipment and services for the hospital that are not covered by Island Health.
Since 2002 we have donated over $80,000 to assist the Foun-dation in providing improved/additional medical services to residents of the Comox Valley.

Qualicum BayLions Club
By Lion Gerry Caille
The Qualicum Bay Lions Club comprises 27 members who are spending a great deal of volunteer time to raise money through various diverse activities.
Funds are raised in many ways including for the past five years a weekly meat draw the local pub, food concessions during the ball season for the teams and fans, concessions during the local Fall Fair on the Labour Day weekend each year and a pancake breakfast at the Lighthouse Community Hall three times a year to some 300 people at each breakfast.
In addition to these activities we do receive donations for the use of the hall and for the free loan of medical aids such as walk-ers, scooters and wheelchairs.
Donations to the local community include funding for the local school hot lunches, the local food bank, as well as assisting anyone in the local community who is having a difficult time, such as, a family member who has to be hospitalized or someone in the family who requires some special equipment not covered by healthcare. We also offer two scholarships per year to our local high school.
In addition to the above, we also manage and maintain 20 units of low rental housing in the Qualicum Bay area.
In 2016, the Qualicum Bay Lions donated in excess of $16,000 to various causes.
NanaimoLions Club
By Lion Larrie Taylor, President250-954-3814 / [email protected]
Our membership continues to be very active. On the first weekend of January we had our 54th Christmas
Tree Chip Up. This continues to be a good fundraiser and an op-portunity to make our presence in the community visible, in spite of the competition from eight other community groups compet-ing for the same trees.
Every Sunday at least three members work at our Free Skate project at the Frank Crane Arena.
On January 22, we hosted a “Score with Reading” activity in partnership with the Vancouver Island Regional Library [VIRL] and the Nanaimo Clippers junior hockey team. Most members of the Nanaimo Clippers attended and spent time with their mentees – students selected by the local schools. If anyone wishes more in-formation on this educational/literacy project, please contact me.
We are now in the midst the Spot Scanner project. To date we have scanned the eyes of the Grade 4 and 7 students in four schools and we have at least 12 more schools to complete. As part of the program, we are also in three “Early Years Healthy Start” community service projects.
We are now gearing up for our “Free Swim” project, which will begin in April and operate in April, May, and June.
Your AM/FM Report for March
By Lion Burnie Smith Your District Retention and
Membership Chair
Spring Convention is coming up April 21-23. What better way to showcase Lionism to a new member than encouraging them to attend our District Convention.
From the business side to the fun side, our Conven-tion will highlight what Lions do around our District and around the world.
Some Clubs help members financially to attend Conventions. I would suggest that perhaps your Club could make exceptions for new members or first time Convention attendees to make it easier to attend from a financial point.
An inspired Lion will be a good Lion!See you at the Convention.

Sooke Harbourside Lions Club
9th Annual Taste of BC
2017By Lion Alison Hogan, Co-Chair
This was another sellout event this year with 272 tickets sold, many just the week before the event! Two hundred and sixty-two guests attended to enjoy an evening full of great food and drink. There were a total of 31 total busi-ness partners – 13 food, 9 non-alcoholic bev-erages, 12 alcohol (beer, wine, cider, spirits).
New this year, were the wooden plates to hold a wine glass and food. These were very generously donated by Thomas Phillips Wood-working (Maxine Medhurst’s son) and sold for $5 each at the event. After all expenses paid, we were able to donate a grand total of $10,860 to the Club for charity.
Our Ticket Blitz back in December helped get the word out and got people thinking about tickets before Christmas. A big Thank You goes to Lions Pat Phillips, Joanne Halli-day, Jane Beddows and Janet Evans for giving of their time to help the committee with this Blitz.
Of course a big THANK YOU goes to all our Club volunteers who came on the day of the event to either help set up, work the evening or clean up. We couldn’t have done it without you! That also includes Marliyn Montag who came on a last minute request to be our “official” photographer. Special thanks to Lion Jo Russell for her wonderful assis-tance with both decorations and giftwrapping for the silent auction – so much appreciated! Thanks also go out to Lion Monika Lawrence for her assistance with the silent auction com-mittee – great job contacting donors!
The committee worked tirelessly since our first meeting in September, and survived several “bumps in the road” including me with a broken foot and Max with a severed patella tendon! Here are the women behind all the work: Lions Cathy Rogers, Gail Young, Max-ine Medhurst, Jan Todd, Bev Lewis & co-chair Elaine Thrale. These amazing ladies are the ones who made the whole event possible.
Thank you to all of you – it was a pleasure working with you over the past five months!

We the Duncan Lions have given the Cowichan Ther-apeutic Riding Association $10,000 towards their new viewing arena.
This is our Centennial Project for the 100th Anniversary of Lions.
In the picture just behind us is the new red roofed build-ing, which will host the viewing room plus a tack store, ac-companing an indoor riding ring and outdoors riding ring.
We are very proud to say this is a pet project that we have been donating to for many years and have put a lot towards and are very proud to be part of.

WHAT IS IT?The Spring Ahead Membership Drive is a 2017 project that
asks each Lions Club in MD19 to hold a
Membership Event during the week prior to the start of Daylight Savings Time
(Sunday, March 12, 2017).
WHY SHOULD MY CLUB PARTICIPATE?Almost all Lions Clubs will benefit from new members. More members equal more service. New members bring new energy, new talents, and new ideas. Also, participating Clubs have the opportunity to win some great prizes. We will send more prize information in the coming months.
SO WHAT DO WE DO NEXT?• Plan a membership event for any day during MARCH 5–11, 2017. You can plan an open house, contact potential members at a community event, or walk your local businesses with membership applications.• Send an email to MD19 Public Relations Chairperson Kathy Crawford at [email protected] to let us know that you are going to participate. We will share the names of Clubs that plan to participate.
The MD19 Membership Manual includes a complete Open House manual. This is a proven method for holding an open house. We encourage you to follow the manual and avoid taking shortcuts. Here’s a link to the manual:http://www.lionsmd19.com/manuals/2016%20Membership%20and%20Open%20House%20manual.pdf

By Lion Ron Metcalfe
The Seafarers Centre is located at Harbour Quay near Port Alberni’s deep-water port and serves as a drop-in centre for visiting ship crews.
On Sunday, February 5, 2017 a Birthday Party was held at the Seafarers’ Centre for Joseph, a crew member on a visiting Philippine ship. Lions Don Clark and Ron Metcalfe attended.
The Alberni Valley Lions Club has supported Seafarers’ Centre for the last few years and donated $500 in October 2016.
Club VisitationsOn February 1, 2017, Zone Chair PDG Rob Dalton attended
Spot Screener training sessions for the Willow Point and Comox Valley Lions Clubs. The sessions were well-attended and the Lions present were enthusiastic about screening children in both local school districts.
As Zone Chair, PDG Rob Dalton, was recovering from a recent operation, Lions ZC-E Gary Price and PDG Ron Metcalfe attended an official zone visitation on Protection Island. This was also the date of an official visit by District Governor, Alan Guy. We were all treated to a fine meal at a restaurant in Nanaimo and then proceeded, by ferry and car, to a meeting at the Lions Hall on Protection Island. The hall was recently renovated as a joint project of the Lions Club and the City of Nanaimo and we were very impressed with the final outcome. The Club is planning a second phase of the renovation sometime in the near future.
ZC-E Gary Price provided a brief biography of DG Alan’s experiences and contributions and then introduced him to the Lions in attendance. Following DG Alan’s address and some business items by the Protection Island Lions Club, the meeting was adjourned and fellowship followed.
Future PlansAlthough the months following Christmas were somewhat
quieter for the Alberni Valley Lions Club, we have nevertheless volunteered 1,752 hours and donated over $21,000 in the eight months prior to February 24, 2017. On March 5, 2017, Lions ZC-E Gary Price and PDG Ron Metcalfe will represent Zone 19 I-7 at a Cabinet Meeting scheduled at Willow Point. Gary and Ron will also attend official Lions Club zone visitations to the Nanoose Bay and Parksville Lions Clubs plus a Zone Meeting at Nanoose Place on March 19. Several Alberni Valley Lions are planning to attend the Spring Conference in Sidney from April 21 to 23, 2017, but we will have a better idea of how many by April.
